Dismissing the early 2000s gangster/hip-hop theme of the classic Saints Row games in 2021 would be just like doing the same for GTA Vice City with its 1980s theme or San Andreas with its 1990s theme. I would have loved to see the new Saints Row game use that early 2000s theme the same way that the GTA games did when they were set in the past.

Let's say we change SR2 timeline from being set instead of 2008 (?) - in 2021-2022; the game would not change that much culturally. Gangsters are gangsters - I don't think they will change they fashion that much or speak differently. Of course this hypothetical "modern" SR2 would have more social media references, modern technology and the others things, but still - Ultor's gentrification plan can be critiqued even to this day and other gangs have great writing, which is not bonded to any culture or time. The same thing can be said to any game in the series, really. Also, I don't think people even want those new characters because of how relatable they are - games are escapism and even then I can't even relate to those people. I want to be a badass boss, who runs Stilwater or Steelport, not a Starbucks frequent visitor, who happens to have a gun and ""gang"".

Volition must have known that a significant portion of their fanbase wanted a game similar to the original two. I can only think that they were told by their superiors to not make a gang themed game. Maybe I am wrong, but that is how I see it. My kindest interpretation of this new game is that they tried to make this appeal to everyone by making each gang based off of different Saints Row eras. Los Panteros for the OG's, Marshalls for SR3+, and The Idols for Agents of Mayhem. When you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one. As for the censorship of the in-game businesses, I can't think of any reason besides political influences. I am hoping that even if the game is being influenced by the current political climate that it will still be able to provide a quality experience, but I don't have high hopes. I don't enjoy it when developers/artists are stifled by outside influences and forced into censoring their works. Great video, and sorry for the long comment.

Honestly, I have high hopes that volition is taking a "build these characters up from nothing" approach. Think like breaking bad. Walter White was quite nerdy in the beginning, and became a kingpin. If that's the direction they're taking, and I hope it is, then these characters that nobody is into will end up making sense. They already have all the gang mechanics, apparently, since they're already naming rival gangs. The way I see it, if you start by trying to fill the shoes of gat and shaundi, you're already well past the beginning of the story. You can't continue their story since there is no longer a planet for it to happen on. I'll give this game a fair chance and hope my optimism is well founded.

After they released goh and aom, two games that were sadly lacking in character customization, their very first trailer should have shown that feature is making a comeback. I think that, again, the trailer could have mentioned the evolution of the new saints. I understand not wanting to show it, cause spoilers, but there are hints outside of the trailer. There's already word that the saints will become more "purple" as you progress. And in the trailer we do see other hand that will be rivals. I'm doing a lot of reading between the lines to reach the logic that we are probably going to watch these soft characters harden into a proper gang, and I'll agree that marketing should not make us read between the lines. Cause what it means it's if I'm right, then a lot of people are going to boycott a great game. If I'm wrong then I'm seeing myself up for immeasurable disappoint that will ruin my day

@@pty80 You're forgetting the 2 main elements here: Time Travel at the end of SR4 and the 5 wishes that God gives to Gat in Gat Out Of Hell(And one of those wishes is restoring Earth,but in a whole new different universe with the main cast as Cops). So yea. Those 2 possibilities are nearly endless of what Volition can do with them and they chose not to use them,which is a shame sadly.

Honestly, I think the setting and the art style are the two worst arguments to make about why this game is not what we wanted. Yes, I know everyone has their own opinions, so maybe the art style really is a problem for some people, but I think most could adjust to it, it certainly doesn't bother me at all (the art style, or the city, either, from what I have seen). What DOES bother me, however, are the characters, and what they imply for the story. Yeah, I know, Saints Row has always had its humor, that's what made Saints Row, Saints Row; HOWEVER, at least in the first two games, it had that humor wrapped around a core of serious (if somewhat stretched) story, and a rather gritty serious story to boot. Where is the grit in this game? Where is the grit in these characters? I really don't need the old cast back (It would have been nice, I'll miss them, but reboot, ya know? A new cast would be more fitting for a new city), but it would be nice to have a cast that at least makes me feel that one wasn't bullied in school, while another would be the one responsible for the bullying, and NEITHER of them even look intimidating in the least. Neena at least looks decent, and has a decent background, but that it drug down by the rest of the cast, not to mention that it would be ironic if she were to turn out to be the most capable and manly out of the group being that she is the only woman in the cast (Not that I have any problem at all with strong women, I just find it funny that she seems to be the "man" of the group). They don't even do their planning in a strip club (How many stripper, and stripper pole references were there in SR2?), they actually, literally, will probably end up doing their planning in an Apollo's... which, from what I have heard, has been rebranded as a Starbucks... So, yeah, even one of the few stores in the old games that was completely inoffensive has been nerfed.

Being from a poor background and seeing gang life everyday Saints Row 1 and 2 were offensive in retrospect BUT I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT. I’m not going to go outside and join a gang, but in Saints Row I’m doing all the killing, buying jewelry and I eventually become the boss trying to seek revenge and put the saints back on top. I love how in the beginning of Saints Row 1 the gang is poor but by the end everyone has a purple Bulldog(Hummer H2). I think everyone wants to secretly live that gangster live style and be the boss.

I would say Volition being 'afraid' to make a gangster game that popularized Saints Row because of the backlash by the radical left would be a good explanation....if they didn't already demonize their OG fans on twitter, mock their concerns, call them haters, racists, etc. and basically insured that they think they weren't wanted anymore and that they only wanted their new fans that basically bitch and moan about the right. Been playing the series since the first game came out. Maybe a few months after it did. Have enjoyed every saints row game since. So I'm open to change. Each game changes alot from previous titles. I hope this new game has fun gameplay. I know I probably won't like the story or Characters though, since it looks similar to Watch Dogs 2's cast which I really did not enjoy. And with how Volition is dealing with it, seems like another Battlefield 5 dev situation. Which is a shame.

I agree with everything you said about the Saints Row reboot, and I also respect your opinions about Skyrim being "boring" just as I feel that the Elder Scrolls series is a better Series than the Fallout series, and that Fallout New Vegas is a disappointing chore fest with little to no payoff with the main objective that should have honestly stayed as DLC for Fallout 3...but thats my opinion lol

@@sizzurpmp3 don't get me wrong, I love the setting of New Vegas and the upgrades that they made to it since Fallout 3. However I think that I ruined the reveal of New Vegas for myself, thinking it was going to be a giant Utopia of casinos and like an oasis in the center of the Mohave Wasteland. With an entrance gate Kind of like Megaton but 10 times bigger, However the more I got further into the game, the more I encountered side missions, which lead to side missions for that side mission. And yeah I could have just got past most situations by picking the bad karma route, but I always like to do the right thing end games that give you the option of karma. But what really made me dislike the game was just how disappointing New Vegas ended up being, it's just free side and two streets of casinos a strip club and the NCR headquarters with a diner and hotel I think, Along with the Lucky 38. And then there's the process of getting into New Vegas, the last thing I want in a fantasy game is to have to go through either getting a visitor's pass paying or hacking the robot. Which I guess in a way it's a good thing because it's points you and the direction of the Kings to do the quest and earn the king's favor which you can use either getting to New Vegas or save it for later to Ally the Kings and the NCR. I might make a video on this LOL sorry for the huge block of text I just feel that New Vegas had so much potential and ended up being disappointing in the end
