I own both games and thus far I like them pretty much equally, although I do find the dice-drafting mechanism in Tekhenu to be absolutely oustanding! They're different enough for me to justify owning both. :D
@tryhardmyass Жыл бұрын
i own both and although the action mecanics are much cooler in tekhenu, i am not sold on the actions itself: is not very appealing to put columns or put houses, feels very abstract and pointless

I am so brain dead from work this week that listening to your game play summaries sounded just like The Cones of Dunshire to me...🤯😆 Oh and I like Tzolkin.
@christianbank3934 жыл бұрын
I love worker placement and rondel games so naturally I love Tzolkin and Teo, but I'm not so sure I'd love Tek. I think it mainly comes down to how I dislike the separate point-salady sections of the board (like in Trajan). Still curious to try it because of their pedigree. At this point I'm a little more excited for Tawantinsuyo!

This episode is fantastic! I started to watch several playthroughs on Tekhenu and would eventually turn them off because I couldn’t figure out the flow of the game. Your explanation was succinct and very clear. Thank you!

Good format! This is a my kind of games, probably perfer the more dry tighter Tekhenu but then it is not easy to teach (Teotihuacan is not a light game but one can jsut get gping "ok I try get some resourecs or a tech first then choose path".

How are both with 2 players? Love them of both and gameplay going by videos
@TheBrothersMurph2 жыл бұрын
We have played both at the 2 player count the most and I think they both work great. In tekhenu there is more jockeying for spaces and influence so I’d say that one is designed to be best at higher player counts but for me, I’d rather play a lower count game and trade it for a shorter game length. But that does come from a fairly “multiplayer solitaire” kinda guy. In short I’d say Teotihuacan is probably better at all player counts but I have never felt like tekhenu is lacking when playing 2 player. I’ve had just as much fun

It's been a hot minute since either has been soloed to be honest but Tekhenu's is smoother from my recollection.

This was a great show, thank you for making it! Teotihuacan is one of my favorite games. I love the mechanics and variability of play it offers. I haven't even tried the expansions yet. I was wondering if there was a place for Tekhenu in my library if I already own Teotihuacan. Seems I will stick with Teotihuacan.
@steveamamoto69294 жыл бұрын
A big difference between the 2 games is the turn order reset in Tekhenu. I've only played Tekhenu solo a few games, but I can see in a 3 or 4 player game turn order being a big difference maker that can seriously affect your choice of action and dice.
@snowren244 жыл бұрын
If you had to pick just one, including Tzolkin, which would it be?
@shortydancer2 жыл бұрын
Teotihuacan hands down. More variability than Tzolkin. The fact that the technologies aren’t printed on the board changes everything. Tek vs Teo, is hard. I like two more because I like that all techs and bonuses are out in the open vs the cards that are hidden on Tek.
@jkennedyV4 жыл бұрын
I think I slide more to Tekhenu. I don't feel what I need to do is as obtuse. Much clearer paths to get what I need to do what. Teotihuacan I have to analyze my worker levels and timing of them to pull off effectively what I need.
@paulhamrick39434 жыл бұрын
For the point you were making about the “pasted on” theme in Teotihuacan, I think a good term might be “thematic immersion”. Tekhenu is more thematically immersive.

Teotihuacan has been one of my top games, especially with the action grids for construction/decoration etc from the expansion. But I've really enjoyed Tekhenu, I was trying to separate the cult of the new feeling but this has helped me understand why it is just as good. Regarding the static feeling I think players having unique technology and decrees helps a lot. Love both, can't wait for more T games.

How about a video to compare Lost Ruins of Arnak with Dune; Quite similar in many ways and I find it hard to choose which I like more. Both are much more enjoyable than Tek. For me!
@mkandrac2 жыл бұрын
Excellent discussion of the merits of both of these games! I own Tzolk'in, Teotihuacan and Tekhenu. The first two are keepers, while Tekhenu will eventually be moved out. The temple scoring mechanism is not easy to comprehend, and seems a bit under powered. Changing the dice locations from pure, tainted and forbidden has a fiddly feel. I admire the game, but the time available for these kinds of games is limited for me, personally, so the decision to keep, trade or sell is one that Tekhenu makes easy due to these perceptions I have for the game. As someone who has explained hundreds of games over the years there is no doubt that as far as accessibility is concerned, Tekhenu is the least in that regard.

I love teotihuacan its probably in my top 3 and I haven't played the expansions. And I have the same thoughts, that randomizer just makes the game so much more interesting every time you play including the end game scoring bonuses on the temples. But I have yet to try tekhenu, even tho we share the same opinion on teotihuacan and I think I will like it a bit more too I am still as excited to try Tekhenu. Hope I play it soon and let you know my thoughts.

Helpful video, I struggled to get to grips with Teo; I shall be trying Tek soon and will be interested to see whether it clicks better for me. I find the visual artwork of the game and components to be lacking and as such neither makes me want to dive into them; I would like to see a blinged up version of these games; larger 3D pyramids; more sculptural statues; more meaningful components for resources, more contrast and colour in the board and the cards. CMon!

Thanks for actually choosing one instead of pulling the classic bullshit of "well, if you're X kind of person then this game, but if you're more Y, go with this one. Me personally, i couldn't choose. I like both!"

Love Tzolkin, just don't enjoy Teotihuacan. Learning Tekhenu so hurry is out. I think Tekhenu may win out just because of the cards. So many options there and I love the buildings in Tzolkin which seems similar.

My personal ranking of the T games: Tekhenu > Trismmegistus > Tzolkin > Teotihuacan. That is only the base games though, I haven't tried Teo with any expansions. It just fell a little flat for me.
