Hey quenby! Do you think you could do a video on how to help young kids cope with digital learning and communication? Or for parents how to advocate for your kids in this strange new world where you might feel like the formats aren’t working

@@thegratefultherapist Mine are 2 and 5, but the one doing the remote learning just turned 5 :) The little one just does hands on activities I give him, which is fine.

I “ home schooled “ my son using digital learning Connections Academy, K12, Florida Virtual School and in person and online college courses. Connections Academy was a short time in 3rd grade while in LA for a movie but then did Virtual Public 6th and 7th using a full curriculum program from K12. My son had completed the 6th grade curriculum by early January and we were refused the 7th grade curriculum so basically he just read about 100+ books for the rest of the school year. 7th grade he finished before Winter holiday so when was refused the 8th grade full curriculum and pick and choose classes he choose from Florida Virtual School I had been pushed too far. I drove to county board building turned in the self run homeschool paperwork and made them give me the confirmation paper right then so was able to go home and sign him up for classes he wanted to do and some required to advance / graduate classes from the Florida Virtual School program. That summer I “skipped him” to 10th so he was able in Fall to start taking in person honors college classes at the local college using duel enrollment program. So he was the 12 year old on college campus but the program he was taking was a 3 course Socratical honors college program and there were two other advanced homeschool students so was a great situation. He was still also taking FLVS high school courses as well. When we moved to the Keys he decided to go to public school and blend with on line and on the HS campus college courses. We had some bumps and bruises along the way. The number one piece of advice I would give is to your child support but do not let the mom side take over and give answers or over help. Make sure that you use the opportunity this type of learning gives to extend time spent on areas they are missing foundation skills and allow them to pull ahead in areas they are fast to get and are not being held back by other students in a traditional class. I worked full time so my mom would just go over and be there during day but he actually started doing his class work in the middle of the night. Interestingly people do have their own internal clocks. Since he was having to be more independent in his study we would set up his weekly course work on the weekend. Make folders for each subject and what has to be done that week. For my son block scheduling was his preference. That is like the block scheduling we do in our own work. Do all the reading one day do half math and half science on two days all history one day with “fun reading” should be done everyday. My son was and still is a readaholic a lot of that is because he was allowed to read things at a higher lexial rating Kindle is such a great tool for that because when reach a word they may not know yet they only need to tap the word and the definition pops up. They can also highlight and take notes on some versions so they can ask for help later or use for book reports. Use a dry erase board to put the schedule on to make sure know when virtual class meetings are and when working on the on their own blocks are. You Tube, khan Academy, hippocampus, purple math state homework help programs libraries used to have homework help resource librarians they could call as well and your local library should have several free programs on their website. Fun things to help lock in skills like baking is so good for math and science skills. When working on addition and subtraction along with fractions bring on recipes and figuring out how to 1/4 or double a recipe. Making gluten in bread dough or using lemon and or lime to cook without heat are great chemical reaction lessons. And when you have issues or questions you do have a right to have access to the teachers and if they are being difficult to get one on one time for issues you and/or your child are having call the supervisor. If it is not resolved demand a teacher change. In this situation just like brick and mortar you have to be your child’s advocate. If the program you have been given is not working find out what other public or private voucherable programs are available for you and your child. My personal opinion is Connections academy programs are better for kids that need group classes at least once a week virtually and are happy with pace of a group with some ability to adjust for personal pace and K12 is better for kids that like and need more at their own pace be it slower or faster. If you have a state program that you can choose the classes as long as fill the requirements for that grade level that is better when you want to be able to choose classes that have ways of teaching that better suit your child’s learning style. If you are going back to work there are some programs where the kids are dropped off like day care but they have learning coaches to help the kids as they go through their personal programs.

Thank you so much Rachel. Depending on their age I would have activities ready. I usually have watercolor paint and paper available so you could ask the parent ahead of session to have what you need avail to the child. When talking about trauma, art can regulate their emotions. xo Quenby

Teens have actually been the easiest for me with telehealth. They seem so comfortable with being on the screen. I have two videos about therapy with teens on the channel so check those out and let me know if you still have questions. Quenby
