I sail solo to avoid sharing good malt whisky with non believers, to get the most comfortable bunk without feeling guilty, to listen to my kind of music without being criticised for poor taste, and to pee over the rail without feeling self conscious.

Well said mate. I have a singlehander friend who says, "It's not that I don't like people, it's just that I feel more comfortabke when they are not around...." Happy singlehanding mate.

@@respecttherisk2022 Exactly why I learned how to sail. Currently looking for a SV that will allow me to head out for Point Nemo.

That's funny! Those are the exact same reasons I sail singlehanded. Thanks for the reminder!

Right on mate. With all the effort and drama it sometimes takes to get out there, it can be important to remember why we do it!

I enjoy sailing and sailing solo gives me time to really enjoy the world I sail in. No worries about entertaining someone or worrying they aren't doing something careless. While it sometimes is pleasant to share the experience it isn't a requirement for my own enjoyment

Thanks for sharing that mate. I have those same sentiments as well. Allows me to get saturated in the present and engaged with the sailing environment. All the best mate.

I do it because it's easier. No people issues to deal with. When I'm ready to go I'm ready. No waiting on someone to do whatever and most especially no dealing with people who get moody for mysterious reasons. I'm fine sailing to my destination and then enjoying the company of people I find there.

Right on mate. Thanks for sharing with us. It is definitely more simple to organize ourselves! I know what you mean about temperament of other crew. Boats are VERY tight living quarters.... so it can multiply those issues by 10 or even 100! Happy singlehanding mate.

Many years my son accompanied me on our sailing tours. We were a perfect team in any respect. Since he has a family and an own boat I'm sailing Single-handed with full joy over the last 20 years or so. I like people but having them around me is not my style. There is that disadvantage that you also have to take care of the other one. It is nearly not possible to say: "I'm going to meet other people!" and leave the other behind. And you get to know so many wonderful (by times also crazy) people. Sometimes it leads to unforgettable evenings. And it is the challenge when you reach your target that your day was full of "adventures" and no risk nor damage. Sure things can go wrong but you can challenge that - alone. That's Single-handed sailing for me. I will do further on.

Great anecdotes mate. Thank you for sharing those very personal stories. My kids are in their 20's now and come out with me about once a year for a few days. It Iis always pure gold when they do. When alone, I share many of your sentiments. Again, thank you for sharing. Happy Singlehanding :)

I recently had to sail from LaPaz to Guaymas MX over a three day period solo. It was an awesome experience. Worth the challenge. I plan to do more single handing in the future.

I understand the reasons why so much people prefer to sail solo. So I would like to explain why It’s non what I prefer: I like to share good time with friends, people I love and others sea lovers. I don’t feel safe: a wound, an accident when you’re alone could be complicated, and it’s necessary to be really conservative in boat setting, so the sailing pleasure decreases. And finally, to be alone out in the sea gets me sad
@respecttherisk20224 ай бұрын
Thank you for that open honest comment. It's also great to hear why people love sailing in general. Thank you for the comment.

All good points, not countering them in any way. I will say however that virtually any solo activity can potentially be dangerous (IE, fall while hiking, etc.). Ive solo sailed when I had no other option. But when I did, I made the most of the experience I could.

To me it's a bit of a 2/3rd life crisis (I am 59), proving I can do it. Also I long for "me" quality time alone on my boat in beautiful surroundings (northern Europe, Norway, Scotland, Shetland etc.). Have time to think about my life up to now. It's a bit of a challenge as my boat is not designed at all for singlehanded sailing, it's an old (1973) Sparkman & Stephens one tonner. Full of ropes and winches, the early IOR era. Now it also has it's advantages, as an S&S design it handles rough seas very well and is not tender at all for an old racing boat (52% ballast ratio).

Sounds like a wonderful and well built boat. Mid life crisis, and challenges can go hand in hand for sure. I think my boat can handle more than I can for sure. I do love coastal inter island day sailing. Off short multi day solo sailing may be behind me now, though I do still think about it once in a while lol

I spent many years of my life fishing solo as my living. Sailing alone is safer than with non sailors.

I have only recently done my British coastal "sail boat" sailing..only about 1500 miles so far. Though I have also sailed the Channel twice, once as a night crossing. I learnt to sail on classic English sailing dingies, and have tons of hours on Wayfarers and Enterprise dinghies on lakes and coastal waters. I love the feel of it being just myself ... and the boat.. versus the water. I worry a lot about others on my boat, and i also like tidy boats - so prefer going solo to get that - Just me and The Sea.... feeling.
@respecttherisk202229 күн бұрын
Awesome. Thank you for sharing that! I grew up in dingies as a kid as well -- Albacore and my dad had a CL16 which is basically a fiberglass version of the Wayfarer! I used to go out alone in a dinghy and try to imagine being alone and offshore beyond the sight of land.... later it became a reality! Oh yeah, I agree, that harmony among singlehander, the waves, the wind and the boat -- beautiful! Like a meditation! Thanks for chiming in :) All the best.

I'm not sure i want to solo sail long distances alone but have done so day sailing. Part of the reason for my apprehension. From your video, it looks like you can't go off watch and sleep. this of course the down side of long ocean trips. I do own a single handed mast head cutter build for the single handed around the world race in the late 80's BOC race. It a question I'm going to test soon enough. I just as I finished for the 3rd time to totally rebuild my boat. Maybe? Possibly later I can answer your question?. I would very much like to share my adventures with a female soul mate sailing companion, companionable ones they are hard to come b y. SV Skoiern IV

I do understand the apprehension. I have not done a singlehabded offshore trip for about ten years. They are hard and usually a bit scary, often full of anxiety and sleeplessness. I am not sure I have the psycho, physical, emotional and spiritual desire and capacity for a multi day offshore trip any more. I will let you know if I try another one! After every one of my big offshore solo trips, I considered selling the boat, lol.
