In my defense of the title, possibly being misconstrued as Clickbait, the video was not performing well at all with a typical picture of a sailboat and a description saying look at this beautiful vessel so I changed the title and thumbnail and now the video is performing extremely well and if you pay attention, it’s not Clickbait either way thanks for watching.
A little history;
Edward Samuel Brewer (Ted)
January 15, 1933 - September 30, 2021
Ted popularized fin keels at a time when most cruisers had full keels. His efforts to cut away as much keel as possible resulted in the "Brewer Bite," one of his signature design features. He also pioneered a radius bilge method for building metal hulls in the 1970s.
In 1979 Ted moved to Washington state. Over the next 20 years, he produced 160 more designs including the Whitby 55 ketch, the 45' schooner Sophia Christina and the 70' schooner Tree of Life, winner of the 2000 Antigua Race Week and named the most beautiful yacht of her class by Cruising World Magazine.

As a marine surveyor who has met hundreds of vessel owners and inspected hundreds of vessels, I can tell you that there is SO much to learn from people like the owner of this vessel. It's the perfect recipe. Take what you already know about boats, combine that with a strong desire for perfection, your resources (money), competent builders, and a well-researched plan (trip around the world). After all of this, the result? An experienced, highly qualified, hands-on vessel owner offering up his knowledge and wisdom for the rest of us. Also, great job by Harbor Yacht Tours on this approach. I agree to some extent. However, this is pragmatism on steroids. If you've got the money to afford this boat, and it's that important to you, each of those issues can be solved/augmented with retrofitting with the possible exception of the head. But in reality, this isn't intended to be a harbor condo so you're truly not going to have that many extra people on board for extended periods.

In the 1890s, when Joshua Slocum sailed through the Strait of Magellan, he spread tacks on the deck of the Spray to keep from being boarded at night. The alarm system was the howling of the pirates as they scrambled to get back off the craft : )

Lots of people repaint their boat before selling it for not so honest reasons, looks like this fellow can be trusted to have done only the best of refit possible. What a good boat and beautiful too without the exterior looking too luxurious as to attract attention, perfect for travel to unknown places.

Thank you- as well as a doctor I trained myself to do AWLGRIPPING at a professional level. I use the original polyester 2 part long aliphatic chain formula and have all the professional spray equipment guns etc. Along with sandpaper, paint , primers and bottom paint- over 5k to paint her. That doesn’t include pulling her out etc. It’s expensive and time consuming as well as weather dependent ( I paint outside). I do this all myself but in my late seventies -it is really a chore now. But I know it’s done right! 2 coats of 545 primer, sanded with 220 open coat TriMite- then 3 to 4 coats of Awlgrip top coat using an accelerant for faster curing( X-138). That’s good for at least 15 years from a cosmetic standpoint. So you are right people do paint boats to sell them, but in my case I do it to protect my investment regardless . Good observation on your part. At my age, this will be the last time I paint her or any other boat.

It's a beauty for sure. But its hard to fathom (pun intended) spending 145k on a steel sailboat. It's been done right but still. That's a lot for a boat that will need constant maintenance - even with the hull and bilge treatment -and knowing the resale value isn't great because well, its steel. They are not popular. Also, heavy and slow under 50 feet. I personally like steel boats, but for 145k I think there are MANY other boats I would buy before this one. And I'm almost positive that he couldn't get the insurance for cape horn due to it being a home built boat.

As grounded and professional captain and his yacht as one could listen to and review. My own 30K n.mi. ranged n. me. to lesser antilles over 20 yrs incl the Bahamas in the drug days. Wish we had the steel barred hatches, etc., and deck alarm. We were only deeply concerned twice but in isolated places such concerns can linger in the mind far beyond the incident (and necessity). A must watch video for anyone considering serious, prolonged blue water adventures.

Thanks for the astute observations but we are in a recession among other things and it will be difficult to sell anything today when people can’t afford houses and out of control inflation.My bottom paint cost 500 dollars more than 4 years ago!!etc. etc.

What an amazing vessel! No offense to the owner, this is the boat one would make if money were no object. You can tell how much love and care went into making her and the level of attention to detail is amazing! It makes me sad to know that he is done sailing but I totally understand the limitations that come with age. It's dangerous for a fit 30 year old to circumnavigate the globe. At 70 it's not so doable any more. I'm 58 and I can't imagine sailing around the world. I can't imagine sailing to Hawaii. What a beautiful, capable sailing yacht!

@@IronLady-ej3dp Yes wonderful. My CAl ll-46 carried 270 gals. All low down. When you see a boat advertised as a Blue water cruiser and they only have 50-60 gals of diesel but 120-200= gals of water, I say that you can make water, but you cant make diesel.

Also.. i would install propper AC, starlink internet, add a small generator and install solar power.. check everything once again.. like entire boat.. fix all that needs fixing (doesn't look like it needs much) and yeah.. off i would go. This boat looks solid, but i am no expert in the topic, not even close lol. What i do notice is a man who takes pride in his boat, who obviously maintened it well and actually sailed it..

15:45 I think it is easier to diagnose the faults when the wires of Earthing are at one place, can trace easier and replace easier and also not confused if wire is elsewhere have to find it could be anywhere along the lines.

That is true however the real reason is to prevent electrolysis. How does the motor start without being grounded? There is a solenoid for the ground that grounds the motor just for the instance of starting. The second the key is let go the solenoid disengages the motor ground and goes back to the “floating” ground system. She even has two pole isolated Balmar alternators. A regular alternator( which is case grounded to the motor ) will not work. Hope that makes sense

From NE - no need. Tradewind sailing also not necessary. I love a/c but need AC power to use it.Nice to have in a marina though. I have never noticed a cruising sailboat at anchor running a generator for a/c.I live in Florida now and we don’t use the boat in the summer- just to hot in general. She has a big air cooled a/c unit running from May to October to keep her dry inside.

I am far too poor to ever be able afford this, however my notable comments are: Im 62, what you’ve done is still my dream, it is quickly turning into fading fantasy. I am director of Fabrication for a company that designs and builds Museums throughout the USA. I’m involved with all disciplines from design, engineering and manage fabrication working with the finest skilled craftsmen in the world. I personally feel I am at the absolute top of the game in woodworking myself. My fantasy of living aboard and sailing abroad now includes visions of that finely designed/constructed vessel “Iron Mistress”. A mistress ones wife cannot be jealous of. How a Man can accomplish becoming a Doctor and living your life in the 4th quarter exemplifies success. My boat is at the Marina where this boat came from in NH, but I'm just a poor guy with a 31' Bombay Clipper liveaboard. I don't need the hatches with bars because my subwooofer isn't top of the line and nobody will want it ...
