I told the truth at work and am getting absolutely demolished for it. That makes me even more determined to keep speaking up. My career is a continual conflict at the moment. It's stressful. Edit: Thanks everyone. I was fired last summer and have now been in my latest job for 6 months, moving from the public to the private sector.

I started following this advice very seriously at the end of last year and my life has improved in ways I did not think possible. One of the greatest reliefs is not having to keep up with all the lies I tell. I can interact with everyone easily and without worry because I do not have to constantly remember what I told them that was not true. It is still hard because there are always situations where telling a lie is so easy in the moment. I now know exactly what he means when he says what do you really know about the truth. So many say they only want the truth or call themselves truth seekers but what they really want is comfort and to blend in with popular group think. I would be lying if I said I never fall into that category as well.

This particular quote has been lingering in my mind ever since my nervous breakdown, approximately, last Thursday. The axiom: "…Tell the truth. If you act in truth, then the order you produce is good regardless of how it happens." was the main mantra that got me through, although I miss-remembered it as "If you speak the truth, then the potential that's transformed is good." But I like the other one more.

Forget about honesty in the dating market, at work or anywhere... Even your own family prefers telling you sweet little lies because in their eyes we are fragile. And when you talk back it's mostly "how dare you talking to your mother/father like that". Wherever I go prefer not saying anything at all. Absolute impartiality and stoicism are the only ways to get by in today's society.

Nobody can trust them to be fair. The opposite: you can trust your judgment that these people are unworthy of the position to make any rules. They can't even act accordingly to rules, why should they make it?

@madwtube I think you have to contrast everything with morality. "Lying" to your children about Santa Claus most would regard as an extended white lie. Those are the kinds of lies that people tell in service of good, it's an exercise of faith that's not too abstract for kids... Act in X manner, reap Y reward down the road. That's the intention at least, as far as I understand it. Then there are lies that are in short-term service of you but that distorts reality in a way that is so abstract that is literally impossible to measure how it affects the world negatively. Works pretty much like wether forecast, we can't predict more than 1,5-2 weeks into the future because it becomes too chaotic BUT it's not like the wether isn't going to be around in 1 month. It's the same with lies. Then there are anti-truths that are powerful, deceitful, maximally sinister lies with the goal of causing more chaos and mayhem. These lies usually have immediate consequences or consequences that you can strongly link back to its origin because of its severity.

Truthfull speech is for sure essential for a balanced sense of well being and is good for the long run. Here are some questions though on the pursuit of being truthful. How do you time telling the truth? Wouldnt telling the truth to those who are not ready be cruel? What if your depth of articulation and sense of objective truth is a bit higher than the average observer? How do you control telling the truth when communicating with others that are not in your level of observation? It seems to me and i may be wrong and would love to know where i am wrong, that telling the truth can be like performing surgery of your thoughts and perhaps of others perception and ideas or can be like administering a strong medicine. How do you know when and where is percisely appropriate to tell the truth and when to withhold it ?

His analysis is deep and it's easy to get tangled up. I'd say in daily life we know well what things we can let go of and what things are big lies we built our life on and will drag us down. If someone asks: do you like my new hair? And they look bad, you can choose not to say something you don't mean, of course phrasing it in a way the person knows you don't mean to insult them, so honoring the relationship without lying about what you think. If you lie, you don't trust that person. You feel like you are more worthy if you're not a people pleaser, everybody knows that. And people will see you stand your ground, because you're not so weak that you need to make sure no one is upset with you to keep yourself safe, you know you shouldn't be afraid. Another thing (and our conscience speaks loudly about that) is lying about what you think is injust. So much evil happens because a few guys are nuts and many more around them JUST LET THEM be horrible, without consequences. We all know that. But in our daily life, we think meh, what's the big deal if my boss or my parent or my partner mistreats me? Am I supposed to demand every little thing goes exactly as I want? I'd be arguing all day! And that's true, because it's hard to manage yourself around people anytime in life. What you can do is be calmly honest. If you choose to let go of something, it's your choice because you know it's no big deal. If you choose to stand up and refuse something, and you make sure to articulate your position to others, that's also your choice. Whatever you do, don't do it because others push you. Do it because you want to. I did it through the hardest years in my life when all certainties were gone and I believed it kept me sane and also kept shame and self hate at bay. I fought with it and I felt I was losing, but in the end it didn't win, because I never betrayed myself.

I think we conflate the idea of "Truth" with sincerity. Truth and truth are complex philosophical questions. Sincerity is the thing I think he's talking about. A lie is the purposeful misrepresentation of information in order to manipulate another's perception of reality so that they will behave in the ways you prefer for your agenda. You are effectively diverting people from the perceptions they have a right to entertain if they are to exercise self-determination. You are removing someone else's freedom to live in reality when you lie. and that is a really hugely evil thing to do to someone.

There is something that I find really problematic in implementing this: how do you decide what is the truth that you speak? In experience, even when asking a simple question, you always have to weigh in: the interest and the intention of the person asking, your intention, your goals, the factual details, the effect you'll have on the other person (you can be brutal or you can be careful and considerate - the way you present truth will be heavily influenced by this). Dr. Peterson will say this instead, probably for similar reasons: don't lie. But this is exactly the same as saying "tell the truth", if you never lie and you speak, it means that you somehow manage to say the truth. So how do you know?

'Honesty is a relative virtue' + 'It's ok to break the rules if it creates value' (some thoughts)
@AeneasGemini
@AeneasGemini 3 жыл бұрын
This is a rationalisation. In the end you're basically setting yourself up as the ultimate moral arbiter, justifying acts because you believe them to be in the service of a greater good. This is ok when your choices don't involve others, but when they do you don't have a right to decide that your idea of what's right is above theirs. When you lie that's exactly what you're doing, you're choosing for someone else what's best. This is arrogant at best, manipulative and sociopathic at worst. Either way, you're robbing someone else the agency of making an informed choice
@77777aol
@77777aol 3 жыл бұрын
@@AeneasGemini It can be said that all choices 'involve' others as all life is inextricably linked; therefore a social conscience is required. As regards 'honesty being a relative virtue' - honesty is relative : the person in question can honestly want to help the little old lady across the road, or, can also, 'honestly' want to burn down a building - because that's how they honestly feel justified to do - hyperthetically because the owner of the building shafted everyone in the town. But just because someone honestly 'feels' something does not make their honesty something of value. As regards 'It's ok to break the rules if it creates value' : Rules can equate with laws. There are three core laws : Legal law, Moral law + the Law of Cause and Effect. If you can imagine an image of one above the other, starting at the top with legal law. Legal law is like a sieve - you can get away with stuff / laws vary from country to counrty, from time and place. If the judge and/or law decide it, a person can get away with doing what is considered against the law. One can also get snared in the sieve because of a corrupt judge. [I will spare details]. Moral law is like a finer sieve [of course legal law + moral law can swap positions] and likewise vary from culture to culture and relates somewhat to traditions and so on. For example, it is ok in some countries to have two wives, in the eyes of others it is not. The Law of Cause and Effect is like bedrock - no one escapes; not even judge or jury. Every thought word and deed has an effect. So, the murderer gets out of jail within 10 years, have they paid their dues ? Of course not. The soldier who is justified in killing another, do they not receive retribution ? Of course they do, As regards arrogance, fear is at the base of arrogance; just as separating mind from body, life from environment is delusional. There is no manipulation in my comments, it is a question of choice based on the Universal Law of Life - that of Cause and Effect. The bottom line is that we all have to take responsibility for our choices - thoughts, words and actions - the all 'go through', as it were, these three laws and certainly can't escape the universal law/s. So, I am not necessarily judging, Life is 'judging' - by the effects it expresses; for want of a better word. Ultimately people perceive things from their lifestate, or life condition.

If truth is important (it is), we should demand honest institutions. The market is an institution. We allow it to be skewed toward more harm to the environment (faster depletion of resources, more pollution, more destruction of habitat) through the pernicious effect of economic externalities. "Externalities" is academic-speak for dishonest prices. A fee attached to any putting of pollution by industry or any output of products that, when used in a normal way, cause pollution, and a fee charged proportional to how much is taken from natural resource wealth, would create an incentive for all industries and all people to try to reduce their impacts on the environment. Markets will be more honest when they show a measure of how much harm is done to the environment. Honest markets will promote a sustainable society. People who grow up in an UN-sustainable society are psychologically inclined to not feel an expectation for a brighter future, particularly when there's an absence of any discussion for how to correct the systemic defect(s) that make the society unsustainable. A society that neglects the primary value of truth in relation to the market system cannot be healthy long term. A society that neglects truth has now created an opening for a demagogue. This society created people more susceptible to fear-mongering BECAUSE it has offered a bleak future to youth. (Our unsustainable path inevitably combines with extreme poverty / disparity if we fail to share natural wealth for a double-whammy trigger for insecurity. Fear- and hate-mongering can be popular when people are in a precarious economic condition. Where natural wealth is not shared, that condition will be endemic. More at some times than at others. This problem is eliminated in a society that fully respects public (shared) property rights. Society will be less prone to being swept up in a populist wave that crashes hard if we respect rights of the people to set limits to various kinds of impact on the environment, ... when we extend respect for the value of truth to the economic system, ... when we manifest in reality the idea that we all have a right to benefit from natural wealth. I've held my ground to tell the truth, even if it hurts, for a few years now. I've done it in a way that is reasonable and not obtuse. In a way with good intent. I've stood up to my father for belittling my nephew for his depression. To my brother for constantly calling his kids stupid to thier face and 90% of his interaction them is him yelling at them. My sister for yelling at me for sticking up for myself to her friend (in a violent way...I pushed him and had some words. Only reason I didn't hurt him was because he was her friend) My family sees me in a nasty light because I have a "problem" with everybody.(no, everybody has problems only I'm the one to point them out) They think I think I'm better than everybody else and am a know it all because I read books and recite from them. Doing this has caused me nothing but pain and objectification. I have been ostracized for sticking up for the weak and staying true to my values multiple times now.. This is the second and last time now I get banished from the family circle. I've seen the "light" and it is good. Just not for me. Still, I won't stop. After doing it for so long and seeing how profound it is, even after what it's cost me, I can't. It's too important to let die.

TO tell the truth ! On June the 13th , 2020 i was arrested on a charge of DWI . When i arrived at the police station i was placed in a holding cell for about ten minutes , a police officer called the jailer opened the door and told me to walk down the hall and turn to my right . As i entered the room i saw two other police officers , the Sargent said to me , you can make two phone calls after you are booked . As i was removing my wallet and keys i saw the arresting officer Walk in to the room , i said to him , Hey , Do you have any powder that i can put on my neck ? The arresting officer looked at me and said , where do you think you're at ? I said your mother's house . He walked in front of me and said again , where do you think you're at ? I looked at him real hard and said , your mother's house ! We'll he lost it and began assaulting me , the two other police officers ran over and pulled the arresting officer off of me . The Sargent said , what happened ? The arresting officer said that i attacked him and that he was trying to restrain me , but i was resisting him . Our eyes met , and i said to him , you have just Tarnished the badge and the oath you swoar to up hold . The arresting officer looked at the Sargent and said that he had lied , the Sargent looked at me and said what happened ?

There is a culture at my college. The prof. just won't write Lor's for the students. They ask them to bring a template or essay. They will sign it and that's that. Now, it's my turn to go through this. I consider this a form of deception, and I'm super uncomfortable with that. Trying to see how I can tackle this problem. U know of any solutions? I had decided not to lie 2 yrs back, after going through a lot of JBP content online. Will I not be able to go for a master's if remain stubborn about not lying? Should I give up my ambition for a master's degree to avoid lying? Or should I give up not lying? 😬idk how to tackle this. ... Dear, Art... the truth, is, what IS! Not the labeling, naming, categorizations that we asign to everything. And, IT is, simultaniously, THE easiest, and THE most perplexing question, ever! All religions and philosophies are bassed on IT. IT is our ego, that can "give" or bring to us that sense of "one-ness" and affinity with the singularity of everything that creation is. But that scense of "self", has a tendency to isolate and seperate us out from the social pool, beginning with the family, then our friends and peers. But, that sense of "I", will attempt to dominate and rule, at every turn. It's what we've been advised to get a handle on and put asside, so that the thinking mind and the physical body, is religated to the co-pilot position, which allows the "heart" to come foward and guide us in the propper direction fo a more satisfying and fulfilling life. Remember that Tears For Fears song, Everybody Wants To Rule The World? That tells IT, like IT IS. Human beings are in love with illusion, delusional fantasies, faerie stories, and anything, other than a lonesome reality. It needs time and patience and much pondering or meditation. And, some life experiance, for us to awaken to IT... For our love can only ever be equal to our humility and gratitude for the confidence and the prowess that stabilizes our LOVE... and it's why (*i*)... NOW... GOD BLESS EVERYONE BLESS EVERYTHING ALWAYS AMEN*XOX*the ROCK OF PHAGES ...

Objective Truth is true regardless of whether or not someone believes it. For example, mathematics is objectively true, for example if you only put 2 apples and 2 apples into an empty basket, it will always add up to 4 apples. Followed Peterson since 2016. Defended him countless times, to the point it got me in trouble. I learned a lot, and his self-authoring program had profound effects for me and those I educate & coach. However, it seems that with the success Peterson has had. ''Telling the truth'' became less and less important. Refusing to acknowledge climate change = man-made and ignoring its realities. That isn't truthful, and it isn't factually accurate. And as the left/centrist Christian Party leader here in The Netherlands said. ''We don't believe that God won't protect us from Climate Change, but we do believe that it is our duty to take care and nurture what he created for us''.

Climate System Research is fairly new in its current form. *''These record numbers you speak of are not record numbers''* The burden of proof is on you in that case right? Show me how it's wrong. Because as far as I can tell, it's always the same riddle with climate change deniers, a lot of vague stuff from the 60/70/80's that is hard to check, a lot of conspiracy stuff, but zero proof. I would love it if you were right, but nothing points to that being the case, at all.

@David Goldsmith Sure, some conspiracies are true. Operation paperclip, Roswell, weather manipulation in Vietnam. Or here in The Netherlands. Oil company Shell burying science of CO2 effects on climate. Or The Bilderberg group, which was founded by the Dutch royal family. That doesn't mean all conspiracy theories are therefore correct. It also doesn't mean that current climate science is fake or a giant conspiracy. Science doesn't prove anything, it just reduces uncertainty. The tools and methods to measure the climate are constantly becoming better and more advanced. Your response is accusing me that I'm not saying anything substantive. But meanwhile, you are not providing any proof whatsoever backing up your claims.
