Today I am sharing some of my thoughts on TellTale's The Walking Dead Series, but mainly Season 1. Specifically, I want to discuss the replayability of these games, or the lack thereof. I have some interesting thoughts on this subject regarding narrative, choice-based video games like TellTale's The Walking Dead.

I’ve only played Michonne once when it first came out and can’t even remember the story. I’m currently playing season 1 definitive edition. I’ll play 400 days, skip season 2,3 and 4 and play Michonne. When I replay season 1 keep the same choices pretty much. When I first played it when it first came out I experimented with options to see how it played out if you sucked Kenny off the whole time. It didn’t feel right and went back to my main game save where I kick Kenny’s arse on the train and mostly sided with Lilly just to piss Kenny off because he left me to die in the store with the helicopter pilot zombie and didn’t help me look for Clementine when she was kidnapped. I like to replay the series from time to time out of nostalgia. When the game first came out it was episodic and we had to wait so long for episodes to be teased that I would of replayed every episode of season 1 and 2 and replayed 400 days many times whilst waiting for the newer episodes to drop.

Season 1 I have legitimately replayed 20 times. I usually pick the same options also to the point where I could quote some lines pretty well. Yet I love that feeling. I feel like I know season 1 like the back of my hand. Yet it isn’t a ughhh I’m bored feeling for me it’s like a hug from an old friend. Complete and total comfort. Although I’m the kind of person to rewatch a movie I like a bunch.

the telltale games are mostly movies or TV shows in a video game format, but the player has little effect on the story. for a lot of big moments, its not about how you want to effect what happens, its about what you think about the inevitable outcome. this works well when it comes to the effects of choices you've already made, like, you choose someone to hold back some walkers, and they get bit if they are missing gear that you gave to someone else, right? you made choices beforehand, its effects are seen in the outcome of a later situation. but when the result itself is the inevitable, that takes A TON of control from the player, so it should be well done and rare. most telltale games don't have different settings, scenes, and characters based on what you've done previously, so you always know what situation is coming next if you've played the game before. then those unavoidable events would be even more interesting if there were more branching routes, meaning new, unique inevitable events that make you WANT to replay the game differently. but it really all comes back to the lack of actual branching paths. i caught on to this around s1e3. carly gets shot if you saved her in episode 1, and there's nothing you can do to change that. then lilly leaves alone even if you want to go with her. even though lilly was right and i had her back the whole time, you couldn't convince her to stand down, you couldn't convince her to just shoot ben, and you can't leave with her afterwards. that fucking sucks. honestly, i was thinking there might even be a romance route there once she's more stable, with clem as an adopted daughter 🥺 but it doesn't exist...😢 you should've had more sway over that whole scene on the side of the road tbh. choosing to either calm lilly, have her shoot someone, subdue her or shoot her. to convince carly its ben or lilly, or shoot her, or subdue her while you kill someone else. maybe even convince ben to admit it, through force or persuasion, and let him leave on his own. or execute him yourself. even shoot ben and carly. that scene had so. much. potential. what ended up happening to carly should've only happened if you couldn't convince or calm anyone, and chose not to use force.

Telltale's motto is "The story is tailored by how you play" when that is OBJECTIVELY false. No matter what choice you make in their games, the way the story infolds is not affected and the outcomes are the same. I kid you not, you could set the controller down and just let the scenes play out and nothing would change. Why invest time in replaying something when everything is gonna play out the same way regardless of your choices?"

i get it tbh, with these games YOUR story is what matters cause it means something to you, so its hard to replay it from a different perspective. I feel the problem with telltale I’m this situation is cause the small decisions are plentiful, but the big decisions are few and none. You can say “chill” or “fuck off”, but in the end you’re gonna lead to 90% the same outcome. The story is good, of course not the greatest, the issue is cause if a “story adapts to the way you play” then if I want to kill Kenny kid, duck, in the beginning whether for shits and giggles or cause I didn’t know it could happen, then let me kill duck, don’t only kill Sean, Hershel son, no matter what. Stuff I’ve noticed of the years playing lots of telltale games, and hell I’ll be fair to it, lots of “decision based stories” in general, is the dream is there, the ambition isn’t. Of course I understand not wanting to creating 100 different endings or some shit like that, but imagine if you did. Skyrim is a good example of do whatever the fuck you want and you’ll find out, and it’s not even necessarily a “decision based story”. You can either join a town, or burn it to the ground.
@channel45853
@channel45853 11 ай бұрын
Duck didn't need to die in order for the decision to leave him to matter, Kenny likes you less if you do that and confronts you about it later. This isn't an RPG and shouldn't be designed as one. You don't dramatically get to change the story because the game wasn't and shouldn't be designed to be as changeable as an RPG, because Sequels wouldn't be made as much and the game's story may suffer. Like if Lee's death was determinant, it would have less weight. Railroading is always used as a bad term but in order to tell good stories, you need to railroad the player at points.
@channel45853
@channel45853 11 ай бұрын
And idk, Skyrim is pretty shallow. If that's the cost of dramatic choice, I don't want it.

@@channel45853 yeah but that’s just Kenny “not liking me”. Don’t get me wrong I see your point, hence why I made the fair statement of saying 100 endings and whatever is a huge task. But of course think of this. Lots of events revolve around duck it’s surprising. Imagine we killed him early. Who knows Kenny would be more down to kill us in the meat freezer. Side with Larry. It’s just interesting to imagine. What if we got Sean instead, he’d be way more useful than duck. Hell we’d probably get Hershel as well fuck it lol. I’m just saying, cause telltale yes does sell us the choice based aspects that’s their whole companies Schlick. So don’t sell us short when you make that your whole business.

It's 100% rough to play these games over. I honestly don't believe anyone should as it just doesn't hit the same when you know the events that will happen next and there's nothing immediately available/new to learn about any of the characters. The game also doesn't change much at all, even the most seemingly-impactful choices in one episode can be made moot within the first hour of the next episode. That being said - I absolutely still love these games. Greg Miller compared TellTale games to coloring books one time (don't remember the exact video as this was so long ago, he was still with IGN I believe) and I couldn't agree more; yes - the plain sketch within the coloring book is exactly as the next person's and not much changes but how YOU colored it is what makes it YOURS and special to/for you.

This is something that happens to me with all "TV Games" Detroit Become Human, Beyond Two Souls, Life Is Strange, and The Walking Dead. I've done playthroughs of these games where I purposely did everything differently, and I just felt so disconnected that I felt I got cheated out of a real playthrough. What I've found is best is to just play through the games while keeping most things the same, but fixing any mistakes you made. Like for example, next time I play Season 1, I'm telling the group about Lee's murder at the motel and leaving his arm attached. Or, more importantly, romancing Violet in The Final Season.

I knew that when I would begin my second play through in over 5 years I would have to do something different. Make choices that fit a consistent narrative that I want. 2 examples on my playthrough that elevated the story 1) Truths & Lies - I decided to have a lee in the beginning of the outbreak who lied to avoid the tough conversations & consequences of the truth. But by episode 3 when Carley suggested to talk about what I’ve done I let Lee tell everyone the truth but not tell Katjaa about what Kenny did to Larry. I gave Lee a min character arc. 2) Leap of faith - At every chance I get I would have Lee have an optimistic view on the world & what will happen to him & others. I.E. not telling clem about her parents, cutting his arm off, talking about how society will return one day. Don’t replay the game for different decisions, play the game to tell a story.

I agree, but see choice as a double edge sword. Give too many variety in how a story can play out and some choices feel out of place from a narrative perspective. TT TWD S1 was probably the best TT got with the illusion of choice, but with S2 onwards choice becomes pretty irrelevant with big decisions. This becomes doubly obvious with optional character deaths, as now the devs have to account for that which makes things a lot more difficult. Just look at how much Nick, Alvin, Sarita, and Sarah do once they survive their early death? Basically next to nothing.

This is why I always wait a couple years before replaying a game. I do the same with movies/shows where I wait a few years before rewatching them so that I can start to forget bits and pieces (I’ll obvs remember the main plot but after 3-4 years I might forget some details or side plots or characters). Same thing with games, I don’t wanna make different decisions cuz I like my choices but then the problem is that it feels a tad bit slow cuz I know what’s happening so instead it’s best to wait a few years and then u get to have the experience u had the first time

I finished the entirety of S1 in one week during the middle of S2’s development and those memories of playing it that week back in 2013… 10 years ago… I hold them near and dear. Replay ability is hard but I have found the best thing I have with the game, today, is watching other people’s experiences. Rewatching it or watching other people play the game I love is enough replay ability for me. I won’t ever be able to experience playing the game for the first time again but that doesn’t mean I can’t feel someone’s raw reaction to experiencing the game as I did 10 years ago again today if I found somebody’s play through of the first time they played it! It’s refreshing and awesome to me enough to always keep me coming back. Watching other people make different decisions so many replays on KZbin has clouded some of my own choices I made my first time around… I still have a distinct memory of how each character interacted with me and my experience.

@@Carlosdreamur Not to mention the writers never wanted an ending where Clem dies. Kent Mudle says at first they tossed around the idea but rejected the idea of an ending where she dies early on because they know no matter how it was balanced that it would be seen as the "bad ending" by players. (Of course a bad ending people would replay to get the "good ending" instead). He said they were right to assume that as people just got emotionally devastated with the fake out ending already and he didn't even expect it to be as many players to check out as it was. He then said they wanted the series to end on a note of hope for the long journey to be worth it. He also noted the games never had truly bad endings, all of S2's and S3's are valid in some way and not objectively bad and they didn't want to change it then and force the player to replay to get a better ending. That's what they wanted; hope after everything that has happened. Different endings where Clementine dies would have gone against that and I'm happy with the variation we have in the one ending anyway. Yeah it is generally the same but Louis, Violet and Tenn can have different fates of being alive, dead, Louis and Violet getting injured or hurt, Louis and Violet both being able to be in a relationship with Clem or just friends. The choices do matter for them, even if it comes down to just the ending and our headcanon after. There is more difference than S1's ending has, it is no S2 but S2's ending style was never done again and ANF proceeded to make those endings tie back into one plot again. ANF had some different fates but he's in Richmond all the same with at least a family member.

I've been sitting here thinking something similar, but I think it's the creator listing two different reasons that there's "less shine" for the game on the second play. @@rachelj8739 Yes! Exactly. I technically did try to make different choices, which did not change the story much, but then I started not wanting to change even the smaller things either. These are just two issues I can see arising while trying to replay this game.

So I thought I knew where you were going with this and you definitely touched on some things. But I have a slightly different perspective. In my first playthrough I was team kenny all the way but then I recently watched this youtube video called we don't talk about kenny, which totally changed how I looked at Kenny as a character. I'm replying right now with that in mind, which is causing me to make entirely different decisions. Where I'm noticing the replayability struggling for me is my knowledge of the event's is changing my decisions during the story. For example the St John family, in my first play through, I thought this was gonna be a new community that we were gonna be staying at, so I worked extra hard to be on their good side. Now that I know the story, Lee is a whole lot more skeptical, right off the bat. However, from a story perspective, he really has no reason to be. And doesn't feel quite in line with (my)Lee's character. It's still an enjoyable game. But knowing how things will play out you'll never have the same experience with the big reveals you did the first time, and it causes you to react in ways that the characters may not necessarily react or respond because of the knowledge you have. It's like I was screaming "they're cannibals man do something about it." Idk if that makes sense but just a thought I had while playing today.

Even if I don’t agree with certain choices sometimes I like to pick them to learn more about what my favorite characters would do in certain scenarios. Like: Is this character a pushover or will they actually stand up for themselves? Is this character naive or can they see through lies really easily? How loyal is this character? How many times do I have to anger them until they decide to turn against me? Does flattery work? How big is their ego? Does doing x choice reveal certain dialogue that could add more insight to their background or personality? How does this character deal with being provoked? Do they get violent? Are they quiet and strategic? Do they cut you off? Do they just act like they don’t care? Is this character physically stronger than mine? How would a fight go between these two? If my character is friendly or helpful to the villains will that give me some sort of advantage or will that backfire later? If I disagree with someone or refuse to do something for them will their true colors show? Will their charming personality completely slip if they realize their charm didn’t work?

yeah fr, i love these games and i think they have an amazing story and amazing plot, but the replayability is a problem cause its more like watching a movie than playing a game, and the choices dont really matter anyway cause if you save them, the person you save survives a bit longer but dies anyway. Like saving carley or doug, they die wayy to early in the season. Same thing for choosing jane or kenny. They move onto season 3 yes but they die like the very first episode and u never even see them. Also trying to save luke doesnt even matter cause he dies from the ice anyway. They could of atleast made the character the player saves survive till the end but has way less screentime.

A person dying anyway down the road doesn't mean saving them meant nothing. You get to interact with Doug or Carly more and Carly even gets you the option to tell people about your crime so Lilly can't surprise them with it. Just because they both die doesn't mean the choice didn't matter.

I replay Telltale games a lot because I find them comforting. I rarely play from start to finish, but more like choosing a chapter and playing until the end of the season or when I get bored. But I do sympathise with why people wouldn't enjoy replaying these. It depends on what you get out of the games.

The first time I played the first two seasons of this game was back in 2017. I played them and I quite enjoyed that first playthrough. This year (about 3 weeks ago) I decided to buy the definitive edition so that I could also play New Frontier and the Final Season. Playing through the first two seasons again felt amazing to be honest. It was like revisiting an old friend, and the thing is I had forgotten nearly all of my choices from the previous playthroughs and most of the twists that were happening felt fresh to me because I had forgotten about them. So if you give it enough time before returning to it, then it will feel right and fun. I had more fun this time around than last time because I was more prepared for some of the hard choices 😂

I had a much similar feeling when i tried to do another playthrough right after finishing the season. But what ive realize about telltale is the narrative is linear but its the choices you make that change the way people look and think about you. Kenny being the best example. You can have hateful angry kenny, neutral Kenny, or bro loyalty kenny. Similar thing with lilly as well. And depending on your choices, if you choose to not make a choice whether to kill lee or leave him, Clem will make that choice based off of what you taught her through the games. The big choices are an illusion but the small choice matter in more subtle ways.

I recently finished my second playthrough of The Walking Dead through all four seasons where I made Lee and Clementine be a bit more rough and mean, and I tried to make different choices, like saving Doug instead of Carley and shooting Kenny, but many of the choices I made had little impact. Especially in Season 3, where regardless of whether Clementine chooses to join Ava or not in the flashback, she still ends up joining the New Frontier. Still, I enjoyed my second playthrough almost as good as my first. Regarding the choices I made, I found shooting Kenny to be a more fitting end to Kenny's story rather than having him die in a car crash, and though I didn't like Jane, I still wanted to see how different the ending of Season 2 would be if I decided to join her.

When you first play the walking dead your so invested in the story it feels like your actually there learning with lee, establishing new characters with him, ect. All that is gone when you know what happeneds and the choices in this game being boiled down to meaningless in the plot and the pacing being very slow at points your bound not to be interested in playing. The only way I could replay the game is if it’s in 10-20 years when I forget everything and it feels new again but that’s probability not going to happen cuz the story is so unforgettable

it's not just a telltale thing. so many games can be replayed, but may not be enjoyable. for example, when a game has one story to flesh out, like no matter how you make the story, youll always end up from A to B. that just happens in a lot of games. celeste, hollow knight, portal. even games like minecraft and sims. like yes. minecraft and sims have so much you can do. but at som point, you end up beating the enderdragon, get good gear, and after a while, the world feels stale and you don't wanna play it. but you've dedecated so much time to that world that starting over would feel like a task. so then maybe you never start a new world, but maybe you also stop playing your current world as well. you got bored of said game. same for sims. you make characters, maybe you have a favorite house you put them in. maybe they get married. that's it. another gameplay loop. create the people, buy or create the house, then stare at people walking once you're finished with making the people and the house. the only way i still find joy in games like portal or hollow knight or whatever is because i speedrun them now. once you know where things are no matter the game, it will be hard to do a second playthrough, even if you do it differently

I think the biggest problem with Telltale games regarding replayability is that you just get the same thing again. It was pretty annoying to me when I first found out. Almost none of the choices you make actually matter. In twdg season 1, for example, in the scene where you have to choose between saving Duck and Shawn, if you choose Duck, Shawn (the farmer's son) will die and his dad will kick you out of his farm. But if you choose Shawn, Kenny will go and save Duck, and you still won't be able to save Shawn anyway, and you'll end up getting kicked out of the farm again. What's the point of the choice anyway then? This is a recurring problem throughout all of the seasons and in other games like The Wolf Among Us, too. I still think that the story on twdg/twau is alone good enough to redeem them from any gameplay shortcomings they may have, but it really locks them in as little more than interactive movies rather than video games. They could be so much better. I'm not asking that they make a hundred different endings based on every little choice you make kinda like in Detroit Become Human, I'm just saying make it so that at least some of your choices have some different results. Maybe if you kill Lily's dad in that one scene she ends up taking off with the RV later on, and if you choose to let him live she sticks around. Or if, in twau, in the part where you have to choose where to go looking first when you're after Crane, you would find different pieces of information depending on where you look first. But what they did is that you just end up getting the exact same thing anyway, just in a different order. Anyway. Good video. Liked and subbed.

For me as well, I always found it hard to choose dialogue of "Scumbag Lee".. except for Vernon anyway 😅. I also usually like to keep dialogue choices that line with my interpretation of who I'm controlling.. Season 2 is easier for "Scumbag Clem" because I didn't really care for ANY of the cabin survivors except Luke.. I usually ALWAYS have Kenny's back in most situations. Point being, once you are acclimated with alllll the characters you interact with, i.e, knowing their motivations and their storyline outcome, it's easier to "tailor" to certain narratives.. At least for me, anyway.

I wish Telltale games were more like Quantic Dreams games. Where your choices can lead to vastly different consequences to the point you'll need multiple playthroughs just to see everything. The only problem with David Cage games is that most of their story is shit which is probably due to there being so many branching paths. Too make multiple paths it’s like they also added in routes that aren't as good and the problem is players can accidentally go to that route and think the game's bad. Ideally you want something in the middle where there's a reasonable amount of variation depending on choices and each variation is meaningful and well written like Telltale games.
