It's not the only way to get Chain lightning. Because caster levels work the way they do in this game, all your full caster levels add up to your total so as long as all your multiclasses are full casters, you will have a lvl 6 spell slot. This means you can actually take 9 levels in sorcerer, 2 levels in cleric, and 1 level in wizard and learn chain lightning from a scroll and still be able to cast it with your level 6th spell slot.

If you multiclasses to wizard to learn chain lightning, the chain lightning spell will use wizard spell modifier to cast which mean you will use INT modifier to cast chain lightning, the damage will be lower than using this methor due to your main stat is CHA

When you use call lightning the first instance of the cast will be the upcasted damage (6d10 if level 6 for example), however, further activate call lightning instances will be cast at 3d10 and are considered cantrips (with potent robes, necklace of elemental augmentation and other such modifiers applying).

For the free cast issue. It's because you have Markoheshir equipped. Whether intentionally or not, when they bug fixed the infinite stacking of these and free cast, free cast doesn't reset or is disabled if you have any of the 3 items that have a similar effect equipped. So you could unequip it, use the free cast, and then equip the item again as a workaround.

You want 2 spell slots in wizard tab (chain lightning and summon greater elemental)=> you need 12 int. If you don't want to have any of those spells feel free to go 10 int.

Personnaly I prefer the 11 cleric, 1 wiz version: You don't get double cast but it's rarely needed, in exchange you get one additionnal upcast per day, the spell lightning from wiz that deal 1d12 dmg/lvl (yes it does so much dmg on mono target) and 3 to 4 chain lightnings per day in late game (which means at least one instance of doom per fight).

You can always take Metamagic: Careful Spell to Spend One sorcery point so your allies automatically succeed in Saving Throws against your spells which means only half damage for them. There is also The Sparkswall ring that gives lightning resistance to its wearer.

@@KimoChaser For lightning bolt you could go for Wiz2/Sor8/Cle2. Evocation school would make your own people automatically succeed the saving throw and take no damage. But Call Lightning is a conjuration spell and albeit the other spells are evocation they don't create (as far as I know) saving throws for your own people. This way you could also learn all the spells in the game. But they will be rolled for intelligence instead of charisma. But being able to have them is always a good option. For that you would only lose 1 metamagic right? Sounds like a good bargain for me. Maybe I'm missing something. Just my 2 cents.

I did a level one fighter and went to sorcerer afterwards so I would have great AC the whole game. cleric at lvl one would probably work just as well as long as you dont mind escaping the natoloid by slapping everything with a mace and having wisdom as a dump stat.

That's what respec is for. However, you lose out on proficiency in CON saves if you start with cleric, which is pretty important. I actually think going 1 ftr/2 cleric/10 sorc has merit though, as this let's you have con saves and be able to use CHA for spells from .scrolls and items.

I'll be honest, no I haven't because for me acting first in combat means there wouldn't be any more enemies left to worry about. I literally finished almost every major fight before the enemy had a chance to act. Nonetheless, it's a strong recommendation that I'll likely incorporate in a different spell caster build.

Is there any specific reason to use Storm Sorc for this build rather than Blue/Bronze Draconic? Every build guide and video I find says to play Storm Sorc, but the build itself is just maximizing the damage output of Lightning spells, using strategies that apply universally. You could do this with Lightning Draconic Sorc, or even Evocation Wizard, and it would work mostly the same, if not better. I wanna like Storm Sorc, I just can't find any real reason to use it over the alternatives.

Personally, I prefer 12 levels of draconic sorcerer with elemental adept lighting feat. You get 12 sorcery points which lets you twin cast chain lightning twice, draconic subclass boasts your spell by charisma modifier and elemental adept boasts your average attack damage.

I avoided taking that feat because creating water to wet enemies already eliminates their resistance, making them susceptible to lightning and cold damage. Additionally, the "cannot roll 1" aspect only benefits a single spell, Chromatic Orb.

On PS I had a bug happen that when multiclassing to cleric I had no deity options which resulted in selune with no option to change it (afaik this only happens with drows), that totally killed RP for me so I had to let go of this build but I loved it so much😕

Could I theoretically go: 2 Cleric, 1 Wizard, and 9 Sorcerer ? (Cleric lvl1 > Wizard lvl2 > Sorcerer lvl3 - lvl4 > Cleric lvl5 > Sorcerer lvl 6 - 12) I also thought of 2 Wizard so I can get the Evocation Subclass but having 8 sorcerer means I would lose a lvl 5 spell selection if I'm not mistaken. That way, my final damage will be dealt with Cha instead of Int since Sorcerer was the last class I spec'd into? I really don't want to wait for the staff to get access to Chain Lightning but I also like having a high Charisma for story purposes. And since I'd be a spell caster, my starting attributes would be something like : Str - 8 Dex - 13 Con - 16 Int- 8 Wis - 12 Cha - 17 Let me know if you think this would work !

Love the walkthrough and concept greatly. Adding bard to group by respecing astarion to dual wield hand crossbows will allow for short rest song to add more short rests. Only thing im struggling to find is what is hest starter gear for this play through to maximize defense with medium armor and items.

@@garyco766 You get your power spells right when you should through spell scrolls. And you get to diversify your strategy based on the encounter. Resistance to lightning? Use magic Missle with stakes. Not resistant? Normal lightning strat. A level 2 cleric level 3 wizard can learn and cast lightning bolt if learned through a scroll. The sorcerer has to wait until level 7 total for it to even come online.

instead of ASI, take elemental adept so enemies cant resist, or spellsniper for consistent crit improvement. the build in itself is so strong any of the feats work, but I would go sorcerer8, cleric 2, wizard 2 to take the "friendly fire off" mode for your spells, meaning your tank can stack enemies on himself and you can send them all to kingdom come without oneshotting your tank too. if you dont have a tank or use black hole, sorc10cleric2 is fine

Elemental adelt is a trap in this build, remember that you are gonna wet the enemies, if the enemies are wet, that are already vulnerable, and if they are invulnerable neither wet nor the feat will bypass it. With other elements, elemental adept works just fine, specially with fire since it's a very common resistance, but lightning and cold are usually paired with create water so there is no need to apply this

Another variant is to take dragon ancestry with witchbolt: It has better damage application passive at lvl 6 sorcerer. (+ charisma modifier) At the top end, witchbolt can do more single target-damage than any lightning spell (even chain lightning). But you kinda not use any other concentration spells, so no twinned-haste.

Tell me what you think --- doing a 3 man team -- Eldritch knight + chargebound hammer + watersparkers + immunity to electricity ring (shield + mirror image tank) -- Tempest cleric / dragon sorc (Elemental Affinity IMO is better than heart of the storm, plus misty step means no need for temptuous flight) + druid for flexibility create water / call lightning -- but can also soak up damage with wild shape. Actually for my next run (6th time) through the game I want to see if i can do a 2 person stealth team. What would you suggest doing?

I'm not a big fan of this spell. I think it's great for lower level where you still have limited spell slots but it get quickly replaced with Call Lightning that can damage multiple enemies at the same time. I also despise the fact it requires concentration, which means I can't cast haste or call lighting without breaking it.

I'm confused as to why you'd bother with haste after you're focusing on call lightening. you're basically forced to an either/or concentration per fight because of lethargic. Seems like lightening bolt/create water would be a better use of that lvl 3 spell slot.

I don't quite get your point but if you used Haste after Call Lightning, you'll get lethargic. Hasting after casting Call Lightning will actually break your concentration on Call Lightning. If you're wondering why someone might use Haste at all, it's because it grants an additional action, boosts movement speed, and provides an Armor Class (AC) bonus.

Re-equip the staff. My item ability menu has been bugged and sometimes requires you to re-equip. Just make sure to do before a battle to save on action slots.

Isn't 2 cleric/10 wizard, just better though? You won't be behind in spell knowledge because of spell scrolls throughout the playthrough. Don't really see the benefit of choosing sorcerer over it. Then you can get chain lightning as a spell and arcane battery it late game. And I believe optimized magic missile and ancestry of war does more damage than chromatic orb? Although twinning chromatic orb is nice, but the aoe blasts are usually enough I find. Can you speak on the reasons you pick sorc over wizard? It just doesn't add up to me

To be fair, I didn't test it with 2 Cleric/10 Wizard. But Sorcerer's Metamagic for me seems irreplaceable. Twinned Chromatic and Chain Lightning is so damn powerful. Quickened Meta also allowed me to solo big fights with my build like Sarevok in Murder Tribunal. Now, can you do a similar job as a Wizard? possibly. Better? doubt.

@@KimoChaser the big thing for me is the progression throughout the game, in combination with evocation wizard. With wizard, you can be a 2 Cleric/3 Wizard, and still learn lightning bolt and cast it innately after learned through scroll. While 2 Cleric/3 sorc is trying to survive with chromatic orb. Wizard 10 evocation ability stacks with each magic Missile, while none of the sorcerer subclasses do, so you still have incredible single target damage when optimized with gear, out performing chromatic orb (but not when twinned). You can play divination wizard for 1-9, then respec to evocation at wizard 10. So I’m my opinion, choosing sorcerer gives you a worse progression through the majority of the game, getting your more powerful spells levels slower, while the wizard can scroll up immediately, with the sorc pay off being able to twin chromatic orb, when the wizard can still come close with a non twinned magic Missile/artistry of war, and can learn chain lightning from a scroll, which is able to be used with arcane battery for much more castings than sorc per long rest. So this is why I have a hard time seeing why sorc is the better choice. Is there something I’m not considering?

The better option is you go 1 level in wizard. So by level 5 you have 1 wizard, 2 sorc, 2 cleric and go sorc from that point on. Gets you the ability to learn the spell scrolls for 1 less sorcery point.

Solution: You can select it from PASSIVE TAB skills, the icon becomes grey after one use and then You UNEQUIP & EQUIP again your helmet (or try some other items) then the freecast icon comes back online again. The bug is actually so bad, you can cheat this out many times per Long rest.. Cheers!

Perhaps also take alert on your cleric but if that's not an option, I would consider War Caster or Spell Sniper. Certainly, stay away from Elemental Adept since making enemies wet making them vulnerable to your lightning spells anyway.

Correction: The bonus damage dice from upcasting Call Lightning and similar spells only applies on the turn you cast it. On subsequent turns, these spells revert to base damage. With this game, it’s best to check your assumptions by reading the combat log. Overall, nice build video.

@@KimoChaser This is actually the difference between Witch Bolt and Call Lightning. Witch Bolt only gets increased damage on the initial attack, but Call Lightning Keeps the bonus damage every turn.

The Birthright headpiece still provides a +2 Charisma bonus, resulting in a +1 modifier to both attack rolls and spell DC. While its impact is notable in combat, it's worth noting that outside of combat, Charisma remains valuable for influencing dialogue options. However, your approach is slightly better for combat indeed. I completely missed Mirror of Loss on this playthrough. Thank you for your feedback.

I think the armor/weapons inherited from classes is bugged currently, started with a rogue and switched to ranger, did not get any of the ranger´s innate armor/weapons including longbow, only ranger skills and spells kicked in. That didn´t matter much since I finished the game with dual hand crossbows.

You should get proficiency in: Light armor, medium armor, shields, simple weapons, martial weapons, one skill from the Ranger's skill list. It won't specifically say longbow, as its part of the martial weapons proficiency.

If I have a tempest cleric in my team is there any point of using storm sorcerer over lightning draconic? Like, yeah, it's cool that we can fly and shit, but the rest of passives are kinda weak. Storm's fury ensures that there's no point in multiclassing into cleric and to gain something from it we will have to expose our fragile ass to enemies. Heart of the storm is more or less the same. I don't want to keep a guy in the weave robe at 6m from the enemy. And to be honest the damage is also not that impressive, seems like its only purpose is to stack lightning charges (I'm not certain if it can). Call lightning is cool spell but I think it will be better for a team to apply haste to 2 people. I can't decide which one to use. I like storm sorcery, however I can't find any advantage over draconic bloodline. Especially when those scaly fuckers have more unique dialogue options

The AoE storm damage is surprisingly strong in some fights when you're not able to line up everything in a lightning bolt or get them all with a chain lightning, especially when you can quicken create water yourself without relying on another class, assuming you aren't splashing cleric yourself and especially if the other party member might be outside of your initiative grouping. The storm damage also seems to proc other damage riders, not just lightning charges which would make it do much more damage, but that might not be correct. I'm just hitting act 2 on my storm sorc, so I can test some of the interactions and post back here later. If it can proc radiant orb, phalar's shriek, etc., it'd do much more damage in AoE. Both are very strong, because sorcerer is incredibly strong, but draconic's defensive boosts fall off a bit once you can freely use level 1 spell slots on mage armor, cast Aid, etc., and that's right when Storm gets their extra spells which gives them some strong AoE damage for late act 1/act 2 fights which have some large packs of enemies, which can be better than just casting (twinned) haste. Storm's resistances are also somewhat nice to have. Sorry for the ramble, but basically Storm has some more flexibility and less team reliance without multiclassing, while slightly out performing in large AoE in exchange for losing out on a spell choice/slot and some HP. But the class is strong enough that you can pick whatever feels cooler and do more than fine even in some of the hardest challenge runs. Edit: The storm AoE does trigger on shocking grasp (for some reason), so storm gets a similar damage boost to draconic's CHA boost there, even if it is more limited. The Storm AoE also does trigger additional damage rider procs, like Phalar Aluve's Shriek, which if itemized around would add a substantial amount of damage in AoE. For example, if you have Lightning Charges and are in Shriek's AoE, The Storm hits for - Level/2 + d4 thunder + 2 (Lightning Charge trigger on Shriek + AoE), which is substantially higher than just the CHA boost from draconic, even without gearing for it heavily. The damage rider stuff, especially the damage riders that also trigger riders, might be unintentional, but it gets wacky real quick.

You can, but Sorcerer first is better because of proficiency in constitution saving throws. There's nothing in Cleric that you'd want to take over that.

You ignore fire resistance, but immunity is immunity, so can't ignore it. And there are a lot of fire immune creatures in the game, but very few lightning immune.
