PLEASE EXPAND THIS COMMENT FOR IMPORTANT INFORMATION There’s a lot of great insight being shared in the comments, and I can only pin one, so I will compile it all here. The tape I personally used was SCOTCH BLUE: amzn.to/3fkDBuS **Shaquille Tarek** believes that the tape absorbs the higher frequencies of sound made by the inner assembly, acting as a kind of filter, while still reflecting back some of the lower frequencies. This is agreed on by ai03, and Tempest himself, so I would say this is the actual proven theory up to now as to how the mod works. Regardless of what the mod scientifically does, the effects of the mod on boards is fairly predictable (but of course there will be outliers because of unique designs). **Zach Shapiro** thinks the mod will work especially well for tray mount boards, and has personally tried it with his Tofu, yielding great results. He found it helps remove reverb and boosts the volume of the inner assembly. The keyboards that I mentioned don’t have a PCB are **HAND WIRED**. This is when you essentially make the PCB on your own using through hole diodes and a QMK compatible microcontroller. Read more about it here: beta.docs.qmk.fm/using-qmk/guides/keyboard-building/hand_wire And here: geekhack.org/index.php?topic=87689.0 **Rob R** theorizes that tape adhesive should get stronger over time, as it bonds with the surface it is applied to. This would create problems if the board owner wanted to remove it in the future. The mod hasn’t been around long enough to prove this, but I’ll make an update on this in a future PE foam mod explained video. Tempest explained that he never had this issue with washi tape, and if it does arise, to use regular PCB cleaner / isopropyl: amzn.to/3BYa9od A lot of people also seem to have inquiries about PE foam, a mod that also seems to drastically change acoustics. I’ll have some in soon to mess around with and I’ll try to answer all the questions (namely tape mod + foam) in the comments regarding it. Further questions can be redirected to my Discord: discord.gg/VBuHBW3BUF Or Shoobs’ (where Tempest resides, but please don’t ping him): discord.gg/caBRWtya3a And of course, please watch Tempest’s original video on the mod: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoWbgKltac5no5I

@vectivuz1858
@vectivuz1858 2 жыл бұрын
@@shirouemiya5660 Been using this for 2 months or so on a TKL board I have. The other day I got some new switches and wanted to know what they would sound like without the tape mod. When I removed the tape it was super easy (what I did was I overlapped one strip of tape with the other). Surprsingly it made it even easer to peel of since the tape was like one single of paper. Then when I put it back, it still had enough adhesive to stick to the PCB again. I used rmasking tape. No damage done, just don't use stickier tape I guess.
@orcblud
@orcblud 3 жыл бұрын
I disagree with your explanation of why the mod works. I think what is happening is that the tape just absorbs the high-mid to high frequencies coming from the pcb and what's left is reflected back up resulting in a kind of low-pass filter sound. Sound is vibration. So usually the pcb is vibrating, causing the air to vibrate, but with the tape the upper frequencies being a shorter wavelength are dissipated and diffused through the tape, leaving only the longer wave length vibrations to pass into the air. That's just my guess as someone with an audio degree.
@nearLucid
@nearLucid 3 жыл бұрын
If frequencies are being absorbed, how would it make certain boards louder?
@orcblud
@orcblud 3 жыл бұрын
@@nearLucid I would say that it's just that they are perceived as louder. either by a perceived increase in attack but a much shorter sustain and decay, resulting in a more transient sound. Or perhaps the energy that is dissipating via the diffusion of the upper frequenting ends up contributing to the strength of the lower frequencies. I'm basing this on how instruments behave to mutes and how it changes their sound.
@nearLucid
@nearLucid 3 жыл бұрын
@@orcblud I think I’m starting to agree, but of course the mechanics of the tape mod would change along with a keyboards mounting style. Either way, the end result is fairly predictable. It’s not every day that you find yourself debating about the acoustics of tape.
@orcblud
@orcblud 3 жыл бұрын
@@nearLucid I could be wrong. But at the end of the day if you cover a drum head with tape its not gonna ring out at much and you're gonna lose some high-end.
@nearLucid
@nearLucid 3 жыл бұрын
@@orcblud the drum analogy is a little interesting. Assuming there aren’t any snares, the drum equivalent of the tempest tape mod would be to apply the tape to the bottom head, where it’s directly against the primary source of sound, the top head. A drum would, of course, deal with more resonance, since the interior is significantly more hollow.

ello drummer here, i love how from my understanding, keyboards and drumskins have a lot in common with sound: specifically, the plate/pcb/switch assembly to a case is like a drum skin to its drum shell, and typing on a keyboard is like hitting the skin of the drum. Gasket, top, and bottom mount boards have the closest similarities to a "drum," where the plate assembly is held around the edges and is "free to vibrate" like a drum skin. Gasket mounting basically lessens vibrations to the case, so you hear more of the plate assembly sound compared to the case, while in a top/bottom mount case you would hear more case sound. Drummers would know, sometimes drums have some ugly overtones, basically nasty high pitched ringing. Tape or moongel is often used to reduce these overtones. So my theory is that the foam mod when implemented lightly, slightly mutes the sound overall and lessens some overtones and pinging, making boards seemingly "thockier". Over-foamed boards just sound too muted and completely takes away any of the sound characteristics, much like completely muting a drum skin you wouldn't hear much. The tape mod or pe foam mod is like putting moongel/tape onto a drum skin, where you would get the most natural sound, while eliminating higher pitched overtones making it seem deeper. TLDR: my theory is that pe foam/tempest tape mod reduces overtones and sliiightly mutes the sound, making boards sound poppier and seemingly deeper, much like putting moon gel/tape on acoustic drums to reduce overtones and slightly mute them, making them sound slightly punchier and less ringy i didnt expect this to be this long LMAO i geeked out too much ok bye

The tape could in fact be scattering/diffracting higher frequencies while allowing lower frequencies to transmit through the material, reflecting off of the hard bottom case back towards your ear. This would account for the deeper sound signature that this mod typically produces. In this case the tape would be acting as a filter instead of a reflector.

Effects of tape mod on my portico with U4Ts (no silicone dampener: Overall made the board a lot more enjoyable. As you mentioned it makes the board louder, poppier, and much deeper. Since the Portico is an entry board, and admittedly sounds garbage stock, this was a massive quick and easy improvement to this cheap gasket mount board. Once PE foam was added between the PCB and plate, however, much of the effects were reverted or lessened. The foam does give the board a much poppier and enjoyable typing experience but it also heightens the pitch a little (not as high as stock) and also makes it a little less quieter compared to plain tape mod. I think that paired together the PE foam and tape mod can be a power duo in entry level boards

I think that this mod will be really good for tray mount board like the Tofu and GK61. This allows the assembly to shine more than the case and removes a lot of the reverb and instead raises the volume of the switches, plate, and pcb. I will definitely try this on my Tofu which already has some foam in the case. I think that foam combined with this mod will really allow cheaper boards to showcase the switch and plate choice much more :3

Gaffers tape is not super sticky and that is why it was made is so it was easy to remove without much or any residue for cords/cables in stage sets. I have a roll of it next to me. Error is at 0:43. Gaffers tape also works great for more of a dampening effect vs painters tape and if you are worried about any residues on the pcb just use painters tape as first layer and then any additional layers use gaffers.

Nice video on this mod! Although I feel like people need to know that even tape with the most delicate adhesive will "burn in " over time & become more difficult to remove the longer it is left on a surface. So I would be advise against leaving this mod on any PCB that is not easily replaceable for an extended period of time.

@@oTEMPE5To the issue is often with certain masking, electrical and such tapes. I have two rolls of tape one of which I'm sure will leave adhesive residue but the other works just fine. I recommend a professional grade painting/modeler's tape; brands like Gunze Sangyo or Tamiya. These are specifically designed to leave little to no residue over long period of time even when exposed to heat. This is because many fine crafts and paintings can take well over months or even years before completion, and sometimes those tapes gotta stayed on the throughout the entirety of the process. The downside is that these tapes are more delicate and can lose some adhesive property overtime.

Definitely deeper, but I feel like the character and individuality of the switches is reduced... if that makes sense? The non-tape sound tests, you could hear each keypress. With tape, it sounds all blended together. I can’t think of a better way to explain it lol. Maybe that’s just part of having a deeper sound, but possibly something created specifically from this mod.
@nearLucid
@nearLucid 3 жыл бұрын
No, what you're saying makes 100% sense. It's even worse with the PE foam mod. Case design varies drastically between keyboards, while inner assembly design stays largely the same. And since the tape mod contributes to isolating the PCB sound over the case sound, it definitely does have the effect of making things start to sound the same.
@TBSxDRUMS

@@nearLucid That’s a really good and easy-to-understand explanation. I know you also said similar things in the video and in comments, but I think it finally just clicked in my mind. any plank or board (literally) is a potential instrument. it vibrates when you hit it. like a woodblock on a xylophone. if you bind that medium with tape, you can safely say it will tame or partially deaden that vibration. so that's what the tape does. it partially mutes the sound.

Admittedly, I've only read through the top few comments but the consensus is, it acts like a filter. If anyone is familiar with sound deadening car doors, I think this might work in the same way. It might just be stopping the usual vibration produced by the board whenever a key is hit thus removing the higher pitched sound which is caused by the vibrating board.

Tried it on my Tokyo 60 immediately. It helps if you add a second “floating” layer that rests on the edge of the top half of the case. Basically adds a drum diaphragm, the first layer mutes the effect a bit and the second layer acts as a drum and makes the tone a bit deeper and louder

well, ive been thinking about this for a while. If the foam mod dampens the sound of the keyboard, basically almost muting it, what if we put tape behind the foam so that it gets muted and gets bounced back sounding more poppier but still muted? If that makes sense.

So is the consensus to do the tape mod INSTEAD of using case foam? Or use both?

@@MaxC_1 I imagine it would be better if you put tape on the bottom of the case or case foam instead, but I’ll need to try out your idea as well, thanks lol.

Probably we can discuss the effects of different types of tapes or combination of them and different layers of tapes while we're on this topic. If anything, the first layer of tape should always be the one that can be easily removed without sticky residue.

if you have a pcb with a lot of flex cuts, should you tape mod over it? Would the improved sound reduce flex?

If foam were to take in sound, and tape were to make sound louder. Would it then be impractical to have a tape + foam mod? As they cancel each-other out?

hi nearlucid, thanks for the content. i have keychron q5 pro. and i want to use tape mod as well. people said you should use painters tape because it wont leave a residue so i purchased a good brand. now im checking web again to be %100 sure however some people said battery might got heated and tape could catch on fire. however my painter tape has high heat resistance (80 degree celcius - 176 fahrenheit) can i use this painter tape? i never feel my keyboard is hot, it'll always cold with aluminium frame and i never turn on rgb also. should i buy electrical tape which could leave residue but i guess it wont catch on fire or painter tape is good/better? lastly if i use painter tape mod. how many layers i should apply, 3,4,5? and should i apply tape to whole pcb or should i leave some parts open, is there a thing i should be careful?

It seems like tape makes keypresses individually less resonant, and gives a cleaner and shorter cutoff

Thanks for explaining! Does the PE foam mod on the pcb work in a similar way? I guess that since the switch rests on a softer surface the higher frequencies caused by the switch bottoming out get filtered resulting in a poppier sound, but I'm not sure (I don't have an audio degree).

Great video, quality of superb. How long does the tape mod last? If I use masking tape and tape my board, can I leave it in there for a year and come back and rip it off without having any residue? Some of my old masking tape developed residue but not sure if those were years or months old lol

You might want to try adding more layers of tape, or you could also combine it with a foam mod. I already tried it on my Womier K66, but I would like to see what it did to higher end boards.

@@skree_fpv436 From my experience, 3 layers is where the sound starts to change, 4 layers is where it changes even more, and 5 is the max. More than that doesnt do that much. 5 Layers makes it sound louder.
