Y’all please stop mansplaining the Control Room to me. I’m deleting any new condescending comments now that assume I don’t know already. Maybe just trust that my template is set up exactly the way I want it and that I‘ve considered and tried other options and concluded that this is the best way for my workflow. It gets very tiring to have this happen on any tech related video I make.

I noticed the apparent lack of respect of your expertise in the comments the first time I came across your channel by people thinking they're being helpful but rather are patronizing (aka mansplainers trying to assert their dominance by making others feel insecure in their place), this in comparison to the all respectful nature of comments for umpteen less qualified male-run channels I've come across. But then my everyday experience as an ethnic female in 2024 is still pretty dark ages so I'm sadly not at all surprised. Thanks for pushing back so others can feel we can.

With the help of your videos, I got a template together with balanced and in-time-with-one-another instruments, got articulations split with a combo of long/short separation and keyswitches, and freedom to write without having to sit there forever dauntingly adding one instrument at a time. Hello, big fan and thanks for the update - very cool. Quick and nerdy question about routing though; how do you route your parellel compression tracks, straight back into your stem groups? Say you have four group tracks; "Strings", "Strings-High", "Strings-Low" and "Strings-Ensemble". The latter three are routed to the main "Strings", which is itself routed to "Full-Score". Then, for instance, you have a solo violin, routed to "Strings-High". Through a send, this track also sends its signal to a compression FX track, called "Comp-Strings-High". Knowing that you want to be able to export each stem, like "Strings", with everything on it (compression, FX, the whole nine yards), is this how you'd set this up? Or do you sum your parallel compression at the end, at "Full-Score"? I'm struggling to get this right to be honest, so I keep changing it. Would love to hear your thoughts. Same goes for FX, btw - it looks like you add those right at the end, on your main Outs? Anyway, cheers/tschüs.

Thanks for this great video. Regarding Sonarworks and a bad monitoring situation, far more worse than "You can't correct what you can't hear" is that you correct things that ONLY apply to your specific - bad - monitoring situation.

I found it helpful when having to print final stems that you want to go through master bus processing to import your full unmastered mix back into your session and set its out put to none. Then on your master buss compressor set the key input or side chain to react to that imported mix. Because as Anne said the individual stem prints through the master bus processing will not hit that processing the same way. I do this a lot when mixing rock and pop productions. I picked this up from Michael Brauer. It is very helpful.
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
@AnneKathrinDernComposer Жыл бұрын
Ozone doesn’t support side chaining though. It might work with Neutron. So keeping anything threshold based in Neutron and static processing in Ozone might be the solution.
@nicksaya
@nicksaya Жыл бұрын
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer it is something that I always do in my rock/pop productions when working on albums. If I have to print processed stems for any reason. Another thing learned along the way because I mess noticing my stems at unity didn’t quit sound exactly the same as the mix. I too learned the hard way with the solo defeat button on fx channels😞. I think they fixed all that in version 12 but I still keep mine the old way. (Habit)

Working with what is now a primitive system for composition, do you have a basic set of systems requirements go might provide to say a new team member to work with you on projects? I am not looking for work, that is simply a frame of reference. Your videos are new to me. I’ve been watching Guy Michelmore and a few others and KZbin suggested your videos. There is a profound honesty in your presentations that is keeping me interested in what you have to say. Thank you for that For clarity’s sake I am not a film composer I like the challenge of composing for orchestra and now that I am retired from engineering and live performance, composing is a joy. Thank you for letting us understand the tools and complexity of your work world. “Y’all”? Splendid. :)

Thanks for the video, very insightful. I have an opposite approach to articulations : use them as much as I can and control/edit them using a control surface (Open Stage Control on iPad). It keeps my template compact and speeds up my workflow. Also, I'm surprise that you put SoundID on your master channel, isn't there a risk to engrave your headphone correction to your final mix? IIRC, Cubase a monitoring channel for this kind of use case (corrections set for headphone / room monitoring).

Hi Anne, OH MAN! Either I read your mind or you are reading my mind. I just upgraded my Studio with 7.1 with Adam Audio T5V and Forcite 18i20. I just put together a video to show off my new studio that I'll have on my youtube channel, it's not out yet but will be soon! I'm looking at the Sound ID for my new 7.1 I'm still deciding if I need this now or later but I'll get this. I'm kind of waiting for a sale then I'll get it $$$. Also, I also purchased the bundle for iZotope and LOVE the Ozone advanced. Also, have avoided Waves too. Another is Fabfilter is another goto for me. Anyway thanks again for talking about these cool new things. It's so much fun to talk about and also use in my projects too! :) P.S. I absolutely will not subscribe either. I only purchase my software outright too. :). Take care.

I always wonder if Sonarworks works with a fixed EQ correction curve or if their plugin applies a dynamic EQ correction. Anyone has infos about that? Like any mechanical device I suppose headphones react differently to certain frequencies according to their amplitude, I don't imagine a linear behaviour. Furthermore if the EQ was linear it would be realy easy to "copy" the Sonarworks corrections with a white noise and a match EQ (or whatever the name of it in your DAW). But maybe I'm wrong. Tell me

Waves plugins are 20 to 30-year-old algorithms packaged in primitive 20 to 30-year-old raster graphics interfaces. They've been lazily riding on their long-undeserved glory of yore, and virtually all of their plugins have been surpassed by other manufacturers. Izotope, on the other hand, is truly best-in-class at what they do, which makes replacing them difficult.

Just a comment that may benefit some Cubase/Nuendo users. I think it's in Cubase as well, but I know in the latest update to Nuendo (v12) there is headphone correction via an included plug in. So I just keep that on my Control Room output and turn it on and off depending on if I'm using monitors or headphones. I'm sure it's not as extensive as the Sonarworks plug in. But no point in spending money if you don't really need to.

I refuse to use software that requires a subscription, and use an alternative to replace the subscription companies product. Another point about using a visual representation of frequency is the inevitable high frequency loss as one ages. Besides just a high frequency sound, it can be the harmonics of the fundamental that are lost or their presence is weakened to your ears.
