11:53 aren't the books and art supplies just a representation of how everything that was Betty was consumed by the crown and its power?

As a newcomer to the series (I binged my way through all of AT, Distant Lands, and F+C in the past two months lol), "Temple of Mars" immediately jumped out at me as it's one of the only episodes in the original series that gives us an inside look into what's actually going on in Betty's head (the other big one is the episode where she takes Ice King out on a date). The rest of the time, we generally see Betty from an outside perspective - we see what she's doing, we see the havoc she wreaks, but our understanding of her motivations is largely based on our knowledge of her relationship with Simon and whatever little she lets slip in dialogue. "Temple of Mars" is one of the few times we see Betty's inner monologue, and it germinates the notion that Betty's obsessive nature was something that existed even before she jumped into the future, and far before she took Magic Man's power. And I absolutely love that Fionna and Cake then took this thematic thread (largely left unaddressed in the AT finale) and ran with it. We learn that Betty's innate obsessiveness and impulsivity led her to voluntarily subsume her own wants and needs for Simon, which was enabled, albeit unconsciously, by Simon's natural passivity and obliviousness. But even more than that, I love that F+C then took such a beautifully nuanced view of Betty's character, in a way that condemned neither her nor Simon. She and Simon aren't portrayed as morally wrongful or malicious. Instead, we get a portrait of how two well-meaning people who genuinely loved each other nonetheless had their relationship tragically collapse due to their respective (and entirely understandable) character flaws. (Somehow done without downplaying their agency in all this!) And best of all, we then get to see how both characters, in their time apart, grew to understand their own flaws and reach a point where they are capable of moving forward with their lives - Betty, as the omnipotent force of chaos she was always meant to be, and Simon, a "normal guy" finally at peace within himself. God damn, I love this show and these characters.

Literally Betty and Simon’s story is so well written and deeply detailed it’s nuts. It might be blasphemous but I really feel like her story and character is more tragic than Simon’s

@@volly9387 I was talking about her meeting king man on Mars since they are probably the only two people who can relate to each other's struggles of losing someone and desperately fighting the laws of the universe in order to get them back but sadly they were less like two broken spirits that could fix each other and more so an addict making another have a relapse

Anyone else JUST notice the statue "spritzer?" lol like dude, wyd??? Also, this kind of foreshadows what happens to Fionna and Cake in their world: everything becomes un-magical, and suddenly statues of the long lost loves are erected. I'd been doing a rewatch, and I can't wait to get back to it and rewatch this episode. This show is TOPS.

Everything about Betty and Simon makes me Feel Things™ 😭😭 i just love this tragedy of love. The love was there. It couldn't last, they tried, and it didn't win. But the love was there, and that's what matters. "Boy you've got your dreams, i got everything in in you" 😭

Honestly, if adventure time is done with Betty's and Simon's arc, i'd be down with a spin-off with Jermaine trying to help Finn through their brother's death while whatever larger thing is happening. Once he cast off the shackles of looking after their parents' stuff, dude really matured in a hurry, but at the same time it seems like there's still plenty of room for character exploration of him AND of how finn and him relate... especially since far future Ooo had statues of Finn and Jermaine instead of Finn and Jake... I suppose Together Again showed Finn never really got over Jake's death, but of course no one says the series has to end happily...........
@PinkCerberus9 ай бұрын
Wouldn't Jermaine pass away around the same time as Jake? Probably sooner because Jermaine is just a dog and Jake is part alien or something.

Your AT video essays are one of my favorite!! I really like this format about diving into one of the episodes, you bring interesting thoughts I probably never thought about before, you're doing such great job!! In one of the previous videos you asked to write here about the episode that we want to see in next video. I remembered about "the tower", where Finn decided to go to space and get his revenge after losing an arm. I think it's one of the episodes that shows his emotional side pretty good and it's one of my favorite ones And talking about SU content, I'd reeeally like to hear your thoughts about "Rose's scabbard" episode, one of my favorite too Also, happy holidays, I appreciate your work!!
