PB wanted a family and community because she was born from the Mother Gum collective where her mind and gum was connected to dozens of others. Her first attempt at a family with Uncle Gumbald and the others ended with them betraying her and almost lobotomizing her with the dumb dumb juice, so she decided it was safer to create less intelligent/more obedient candy people.

I personally think it relates to how she treats her citizens. Like bro, she is George Orwellian big brother watching everything everyone does in her kingdom, minus one person. Peppermint Butler isn't constantly surveilled so it's weird. I assume she's got a controlling aspect

I think she was testing herself, besides the fact that she's an elemental and lives in an era of kingdoms, trying to repopulate the earth.

I think that because she came from the mothergum (which had multiple entities in it) she has always felt the need for more people around her, which contrasts her brother neddie very well

Also like. PB's gun in this episode is such an amazing visual gag. Especially when there's an option to shoot another gun.

Honestly, one of the things Bubblegum always struggled with in the series is learning when to let others have control. I mean, yeah she had Neddy, but he was not really the social nor verbal to begin with and would prefer to spend his days making the water he makes from sucking on the roots of the tree for which the Candy Kingdom was found and established on. Bubblegum would even spy on her citizens and even have tracking devices implanted into them so she could keep an eye on and know where they were. She even intentionally made them dumber than her and overly sweet so that no one would threaten her throne. Bubblegum only did all this after what happened with Uncle Gumball, because she was so use to making the decisions, that even when she made new family members, she could not understand that these were beings of equal intelligence like her and thus have their own thoughts and desires. She became a control freak because she could not understand others and that they have their own lives to live that do not require her to do, really, anything. One of her worst moments was when she put the Fire Kingdom at risk because she wanted to '"protect her citizens and kingdom." Honestly, I get where she comes from since fire is destructive and the rulers before were in to being evil, but she could not see that Flame Princess wanted to change things and make the kingdom more honest and better without violence and destruction. Phoebe calling Bubblegum a bad person resonated with me because it finally snapped in place that Bubblegum had made very poor choices that could have resulted in the destruction her kingdom and citizens. That SHE is putting them at risk for her want to control everything. In this episode, Bubblegum tries to make it so that she still has some control in her situation with all her gadgets as she deals with the varmints but during her time with Marceline she breakdowns as she realizes how much she has lost by trying to keep everything under control and through her work nonetheless. I know I went a little off-topic, but I just felt like I needed to get this out there.

@ JaceyChristian No you hit the nail in the coffin, PB in such a young age was force to grow up quickly and was surrounded by danger nonstop . Their was no one there to guide her to know the difference between right or wrong. Unlike Marceline, who was given love, care, and attention from both her mom and Simon. PB heart was in the right wanting to protect her people But her mind was clearly in the wrong. Making her a gray character in my opinion.

I love the Varmints episode. It's very good, and I love the clip when Marceline and Bubblegum are in the subway tunnel, and have a heart to heart. It's very nice to watch. :3
