The Paris Olympics are just starting, and I always find it inspiring, so my theme for this book list is Books to Inspire You. They are books that have inspired me, for various reasons, and they generally include themes of achievement, succeeding against the odds, self improvement, working together as well as those that have inspired and encouraged me in my writing career. I hope you enjoy.

Enjoy the Olympics! I've been watching since I was a child. Watching reminds me so much of my mother, we were obsessed with them. I watched women surfing today, it was really fun. I also watched Dressage. Cross Country tomorrow, that's so nerve wracking! Yay, Olympics!

❤️ Charles Dickens ❤️ Wish I'd known in my younger years what a magnificent author he was. Have many titles to still read for the very first time. Enjoy your videos! 🌻

Kite Runner was long remembered. Jane Eyre was also a perseverance spirit!! Reading The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah based in Paris and occupied France during WWII. Excellent

I’m glad you mentioned Personal development books. I had a whole pile that helped me through the darkest hours of my adult life. I might never re-read them but they did help at the time. One short book I’m sure you would like if you haven’t read it already, is « Small country » by Gaël Faye. It’s a semi-autobiographical account of how life in the Rwanda and Burundi societies fell apart during the atrocities of the Rwanda genocide, as seen from a child’s perspective. It’s very well written although I couldn’t say how good the English translation is. Thank you for all recommendations !

I loved The Time Travellers Wife! I saw the movie and read the book... and cried my eyes out to both. I saw the movie first and had no tissues with me. Imagine my dilemma when the lights came up. I would like to hear about more alternative fiction books you've read and what makes that genre different from sci fi.
@booksfrommybookshelf
@booksfrommybookshelf Ай бұрын
The range of sci fi is quite large, and it would be interesting to do a video on what books can be classed in that genre - I think the TTW crosses both genres, and so many books cover multi-genres.

Thank you so much Rosamunde for this video! Just want to say that I love inspirational books! I think that no matter what you read it is never a waste of time! We can learn so much from books and I am not talking just about educational books! We all tend to have different perspective on things and life in general so it always good to see how somebody else sees things! I do love Paulo Coelho's books I am reading the "Manual of the warrior of light" only half way through but I love it! It could have made this list of yours, sorry I didn't mention it sooner! I did love the Alchemist as well! Tilly is looking as sweet as always and I hope that you will enjoy watching the Olympics!🤩

Thank you so much for this inspiring video. I love when you talk about your favourite books as your excitement is very infectious. 🙂 I also love Eckart Tolle's books. I would also recommend Rhonda Byrne's latest book The Greatest Secret. And in the similar vein of things, an amazing book is The Wisdom of Insecurity by Alan Watts and Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. Those are some of my absolute favourites. Although I love spiritual non-fiction, I find that similar uplifting and lifechanging messages can be found all throughout fiction literature, such as The Secret Garden by F. H. Burnett, Jane Eyre by Ch. Brontë, I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith or even the book I am currently reading, called The Naming by Alison Croggon. The power of books is just amazing. Definitely something to be grateful for every day... 🙂

I so agree with you - there is so much to be gained from reading. I'd like to read the Alan Watts book.

I’ve read and reread The Power of Now and A New Earth many times. The practice of gratitude has been an important part of my daily life. Therefore, on your recommendation I'll read The Magic. Louise Hay and Wayne Dyer's books have also been inspiring. I very much enjoyed this video. Happy reading.😊

Hello! I live in Bedford County, Virginia in the U.S. It’s a small town and is the home of the National D-Day Memorial. Anyway, I’ve never been outside of the U.S. and I have always been fascinated by all things in the UK, Ireland and Scotland and especially books set in these places! I love your videos, your accent, and your knowledge of books and your reviews! Watching you makes me feel like I’m there in your beautiful country with you! Thanks for your inspiration of reading. You are lovely and delightful. Tina 😊

Thank You! It is a beautiful country and I wouldn't live anywhere else - small in comparison to the US, but so diverse in its terrain and full of interesting history. Hope you can visit one day!

Ros, I love your list and your perspective on classic stories. Two books that inspired me are "Furthermore" and "Whichwood", by Tahereh Mafi. They're full of deep psychological insight. Your comments on Khaled Hosseini and Paulo Coelho made me think it would be interesting to watch a video about books by foreign authors you've enjoyed reading.

Hi, Rosamunde, loved your book talk and a lot of the mentioned books I know and like so much! I didn’t know that Eknath Easwaran wrote a book about Gandhi and will try to get a copy. He has written other very inspirational books I always had in my office to cheer up, when my job as a jurist dried me out. I’m a re-reader, my husband isn’t , except Eckhard Tolle's NOW, which he likes to reread from time to time. I’m not too much in fantasy and dystopia, except Narnia, Lord of the rings, Harry Potter, Fahrenheit 451 and Blackout (really scared me!). Thank you for sharing, love to you and your 'diva' from Germany, Monika❣️

Hello from Ottawa Canada. Just found your vlog and subscribed. I just love your videos and Tilly is adorable. So happy you mentioned the Narnia Chronicles, they have been on my shelf, unread for a few years. I am now going to move them up on my Tbr. I looked at one of your earlier videos where you were talking about Charles Dickens, again his books other than a "Christmas Carol" have been sitting on my shelf unread. I had already pulled off A Tale Of Two Cities" thinking that would be a good one to start with, what would be your suggestion? I am also re reading "Lord of the Rings" again. I read it many years ago when we were living in South Africa. I had the lovely copy of the book you showed the picture of. Went missing a long time ago. 😭 I really am happy I found your videos. You have been a real inspiration to me. I had drifted away from good literature but you have given me the way to get back. Please, let's keep in touch. Give Tilly a big hug from a friend In Canada, maybe a treat too. Sylvia.

Thank you for your lovely comments! I would suggest starting Dickens with something like Great Expectations or Nicholas Nickleby, and then moving on to the more heavier stuff later. Or start with one where you already know the story, perhaps.

I really enjoyed "The Power of Now"(read it twice so far & I'm not one to re-read books) also enjoyed "The Alchemist". You might enjoy the books by James Redfield. "The Sanctuary of Women" by Jan Richardson I found very helpful. I will read it again.

You mentioned that you just love the Obamas. I assume you're interested in and have studied American politics? What books on American politics have you read?
@booksfrommybookshelf
@booksfrommybookshelf Ай бұрын
Actually, I haven't. Though I have visited America, and I also have American ancestry, so I have an interest in the country and its history - but I just watch the news and keep up with what's happening. When Obama was president, I just loved the way he spoke - he and Michelle just seem so intelligent and with so much integrity.
