Of interest to me is that society in 500 years will look back on us with the same disgust.

Compared to their Renaissance descendants, medieval peasants were frequent bathers, a practice which survived the fall of Rome. Most market towns had facilities where people could bathe in groups. It was a social activity, with women covering their hair so they wouldn’t technically be naked in front of male patrons.

Spent a month on the edge of the Sahara, living at an oasis beside a small river coming down from the Atlas mountains. Goats were plentyfull alone the river & round floating goat turds floated by in numbers at times. Got our water from the river. The villagers walked over to a tiny island mid stream, dug an easy pail-sized hole in the sandy soil & collect the well filtered water. None of the party of 12 'hippies' I was with got the dreaded 'diarrea' and no one ever complained of worms.

As a retired horticulturist ( of 40+ years) let me just say to any modern vegetable garderers out there- NEVER use human waste as compost in your food gardens! You can use sheep / cow/ horse manure, but only if sat for at least 1 year to allow the ammonium in the urine content to dissipate, afyer ithas be turned several times. Store bought bags of animal manures are usually safe for immediate use.

Medical maggots are a thing even today. Fly larva and flies are fed for generations with no pathogens or parasites. The interesting thing is that the maggots prefer gangrenous to living flesh, and so it was a good way to clean infected wounds. This is especially helpful where anti-biotics etc are in short-supply. The main danger from intestinal worms is nutritional, so it affected people who were poor more than the rich. Tape worms etc, are not entirely safe, as some [thread] can migrate outside the gut. Or cause blockages within the gut. There is some evidence that people infected with parasites are less likely to have auto-immune system problems. Probably because after millions of years evolving in an environment containing pathogens and parasites, now live in clean, hygienic conditions.

My grandparents didn’t have a an indoor bathroom until probably the early eighties. Before that it was either the outhouse or the thunder mug. Baths were once a week whether you needed it or not. The door to the dining room was shut and the back door was locked and we took care of business in the kitchen since it was the only room with running water. We were encouraged not to dawdle.

I guess you could also include the fact that historical and mythological records report the existence of 'brain balls' in Ireland. Part of an Irish custom, parts of the brain of a fallen foe would be extracted, mixed with lime, and allowed to harden in the sun until it was as hard as a rock. They would keep it for themselves or even use it in a sling in battle

We still do this now. Especially in Islamic countries. Where anything goes . Young girls were betrothed to other high ranking boys. But often didn't actually marry till they were much older. Also in some cases the women betrothed might be substantially older than the boys they eventually married. The reason for that was to keep money 💰 and power in the family. Also 1rst cousins were married for the same reason Example. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert etc ,many more of them Just look at Pakistan and Bangladesh where very young people related are being married off, just for the sake of money 💰
