I have a lot of fun turning a very small piece of Apple into an emerging Bowl. Well I got 2 emerging bowls from it.
Not only fun but not all that hard to do.
Finished with Zinsser Seal Coat and Zinsser Shellac
Polished with Acks Sanding Paste and Acks Polish/Restoring Paste
I used bowl gouges, negative rake scrapers, diamond point tool and a skew to make this very fun turning.
Thanks to Dave for sending me the wood
Thanks to Gord Rock for getting me hooked on Smarties!

Pretty tricky putting those pads on your drill, Gary! Awesome turning! Thanks for the shout-out, buddy. Much appreciated, my friend. I'm glad you aren't tired of Smarties yet! 😂😂😂😂 Nice photo of you and your bride! 👍😃😃 Oh, great video, too! Take care, .....Gord

Thank you Gord! Yes indeed you better belive the Smarties I put those Smarties to a good use. That photo was taken on our trip across the states in our new motorhome. Saw lots of things and you have seen a few at the end of some videos. Lately I have been adding vacation photos from here in Oregon and other states. In case you did not get it she walked into the shop and heard the chips falling and said that..which made me laugh. I put it in the video where it actually happened. She got a kick out of that. Take care my friend, Gary

Thanks so much Ray. It is lots of fun to do and not all that hard. You can make one out of a milled block and no cradles needed. Never done one like that because...well this looks cooler and has more of a challenge. Thinking I should do a video of the easy way. Might do a simple one to really clear it up.

@@ThePapa1947 I never made videos before and don’t know what all is involved. I guess I could have made a video on the scaled down radial aircraft engine I completely built from scratch a few years back. But, that would take many hundreds of hours videoing over the course of four years involving the design, mold making, metal casting, machining and assembly. It was a very tedious and laborious endeavor only a retired mechanical engineer would appreciate. That’s why I now enjoy wood turning so much because I let the wood dictate the shape and final outcome. There isn’t nearly as much detail and close tolerances involved; things I no longer have the patience in doing.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
That would have been a very cool video but I understand the time it would take. As a retired wood pattern maker I totally understand what is involved and the tolerances needed. I wished I would have taken more pictures of everything I built during all those years. But I did get some good ones I took myself and others took of me working on them. I think that is why I really like turnings like this where you need to complete each step as close as you can in order for it to work. Thanks for watching! Take care, Gary

My similar apple branch burl is slated to become a box, with the burl as the top. Still drying, don’t want to rough turn it. Very nice alternate choice for your branch. I bet Gord was happy to know there are two bowls of his favorites waiting if he ever gets south across the border to visit!
@ThePapa1947

Thank you Valerie! I have the other 2 pieces he sent that are the same sized. But they are both just round branches so I will think about how to best use them. I am thinking there will not be any visits in the near future. And I have to admit we ate those right after I finished the video...ooops!

@@ThePapa1947 I won’t tell Gord if you don’t tell Gord! Anyway, you would want to have fresh ones if he did come south. So no harm. Hope they go down good!!! If you want more apple branch burls about the same size, I acquired some last year and am willing to share.

Oh, Gary, what a fun video. Well explained and reminded me that I don't need a buffing ball for the inside of my bowls, when I choose buffing. It's all right there with pads and paper towels. As for Smarties, I apologize to anyone who tries them and wonders what those Canucks were thinking. I'm not a fan. As a kid, I was, even when they introduced the blue ones. I think the recipe changed and the candy shell became a bit bitter, in my opinion. :) I appreciated observing the methods you used, including the counterweighting. Great video, all around.

Thank so much Jay! The sanding pad and paper towel really worked great on this one. I think a piece of an old tee shirt would work good as well. Well around here we have M&M's and we get those. Both plain and with nuts. Thanks for watching and commenting. Gary

That is a really unique take on the emerging bowl Gary - just fantastic! And we woodworkers dream up all kinds of ways to make sanding slightly more bearable, don’t we?! I’ve been using the scotch brite pads on my 5” random orbit, too, for doing larger flat work pieces 👍

Thank you Lisa. I have made a lot of furniture and cabinets. I learned to go over the lacquer finish with Johnson paste wax and 0000 steel wool. Scotch Brite is so much better. But I still use the steel wool and Johnson for my machines. Take care Gary

Before cutting it down, you can try a few other options. If not blooming much, prune it. Or it may require a pollen tree to cross pollinate with. If so, plant a good pollen tree close by.if all that fails, THEN you can cut it into turning blanks!
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
@@valeriehenschel1590 been pruned many times. Perhaps another tree but we have one about 20 feel from it. I cut nothing down till my wife(raised on a farm) says so. We will see how it does next year.
