Even I thought the same before completing the whole series, like why doesn't she stand-up for herself, but later when I watched the whole thing I realised that Yiren's only family is her aunt,uncle and her cousin. Everytime she visits them she hopes that they would change their mind and see her as a family. I hate that the cousin took away the memory that belongs to Yiren, she should have told Li Zhe the truth, that one decision is something I do not agree with. But in the later series we see her getting stronger and being able to stand-up for herself without lying, there's some character improvement there.

The script writers and director over-playing this story line. Lead character even has the face for this nonsense. She has a strong supportive partner that will support her, but she won't walk away. As for the persistent lying, it's clearly pathological. For me it's a turn off. I cannot imagine being with a pathological liar. It would be a better script if the male lead makes it an issue and leaves her to come her senses. Otherwise, his character is diminished if he is willing to become less principled. It happens in real life too. A strong character lower their standards, a lot of the time to their detriment.

It's kind of sad that Yiren feels the need to lie all the time. It's unnecessary but unfortunately a learned defense mechanism because her cousin used to lie on her and her aunt would never believe that Yiren was right. They always do something that makes her feel like she needs to keep her walls up. They're straight up awful. And uncle is kind of no better. Yiren constantly has to hide her things, if not cousin takes them or auntie insists on taking them. SO while totally stupid to hide the fact that she's seeing someone, maybe she's just afraid that they are going to take another thing that's hers or she cares about. A big hope is that Yiren comes to be as honest as Zhiyou is, because as much as he needs to soften that blunt behavior, she needs to face things head-on. That being said, super frustrated that Yiren hasn't grown a backbone yet. But then again, 31 episodes, so it'll be a long journey
