This is a really useful way to look at the principles behind the Kuzushi in each technique I think.

"Lines of kuzushi" a useful visual interpretation, clearly defined. Use of the Jo especially appropriate in this instance

thank you Raymond - always good to get feedback. Its a lovely technique but rarely get practiced beyond kihon - once it start to mold into other principles like Shomenate, it becomes a VERY effective self defence principle.

With the initial movement off to the side. Is there anything preventing uke from just letting go and standing upright?

None whatsoever, hence "basic" . These are white belt/beginner drills to show angles and kuzushi points. Would be like saying to a BJJ person learning a mount escape "Whats to stop them biting your face?". Nothing more than a cooperative dril - but the same angles and principles scale up against other, more practical situations, which our students progress to, and of course pressure test. Welcome to the channel Gronked btw.
