Wow, very classy and gives me a sense of film scores from the 60's or earlier which I really like as a guitarist who plays a lot of original themes for my channel so this is a pleasure to experience such dynamic and expressive music. Many cheers!

@@HollandAlbright I was wondering about that, it seems like a lot of extra work on top of composing... But if you're dreaming of writing for real orchestra, it's good to get that practice down!

This is absolutely gorgeous!! The orchestration is wonderful, but that theme opening with the perfect fifth, one of my favorite intervals (hot take, I know :P)… it gushes and it’s lovely! I’ll certainly check out more of your stuff when I have some time in the future - always inspiring to hear more orchestral music, and to fall in love immediately with your style!!

Holland, you have been one of the most inspiring composers for me recently. Slowly going through your body of work, enjoying every piece. This one instantly strikes with its romantic film score style. So unusual to hear heartfelt music these days when everyone imitates trends instead of developing their own voice. Your style really stands out. I've been enjoying your piano pieces a lot but your orchestral writing is just as good. How do you study orchestration?
@HollandAlbright Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Honestly, it's hard sometimes to not want to jump on trends, because I see how successful others are by doing it, but it doesn't feel fulfilling for me. I was with a group a while ago that did covers, and while it was fun for a little bit at first, it began to feel like an obligation, and I was using my creative energy on things I didn't want to and it was emotionally draining. I realized then that I needed to do what was fulfilling for my spirit. I enjoy listening to cover songs, but it took too much energy to make them and also write my own music. So it may not be popular, but I enjoy working on my own projects much more and making up stories and scenes for the songs I write. As for studying orchestration, I think most of what I know came from listening a lot to my favorite composers and trying to figure out how they made the sounds/effects/styles that I liked, and a heck of a lot of practicing (I've been writing for over 15 years and feel like I've only just started to get good at it, so it's been a long journey). I also had a very inspiring theory teacher once during the evening classes I took a few years ago who was very good at teaching and left me wanting to write music after most classes - especially the lessons about romantic era/chromaticism/impressionist- that really opened my eyes to composition and made it feel like the possibilities were endless. Personally I feel like the past few years have been my best, like something switched and I'm actually proud of a lot of my work (I cringe at a lot of my older music). Thank you, again! :)

@@HollandAlbright I definitely feel you on covers, this can turn into grind pretty fast and it's easy to lose track of your own creative goals (been there). Though I still love to breathe new life into good music, there is a lot of fun in interpretation work. The balance between performance and composition is difficult though - performance is quite disciplined activity, but with composing you can just dive in and lose track of time. This is something I love about it, but it also makes the whole juggling thing difficult. It's interesting that you mention "the switch", because that's how I feel about my progress too. It seems to me that a lot about getting better in music goes kinda subconsciously and then you change your perspective a bit and things just starting to flow. Thanks again for such detailed reply, it's really nice to chat with you. :)

Your channel randomly got recommended on Twitter and I am happy I clicked ! This piece flows naturally and technically you made a great job making the samples sound authentic. Seeing that you are self-taught makes me think maybe I should give a shot to proper ochestral writing at some point... anyway, great work :)

Thanks for the kind words! I often come up with stories before, during, or after writing a song. It’s been a while since I was working on this, but I think it was that it felt like a character theme for a scene involving someone expressing a vulnerable emotion.
