My 2014 / 690 ER has done 46,000 klms - it’s had a new clutch, top end rebuild and all the usual consumables like pads & a brake caliper overall, wheel bearings front and rear, drive chain and sprockets but it’s a beast whatever way you look at it, and it eats T700s for breakfast. The big single cylinder KATOs need a fair bit of maintenance but they have a thrilling edge to their performance that makes the Japanese bikes DULL by comparison. Live on the 690 ER !!!

Hey mate I sold my T7 & built a 500-EXC into a light ADV bike. I live in Cairns & the tracks get steep & tough very quick , my mate had a 690 & sold that for a 500-ADV build too. I have balanced wheels, rubber mounted bars, thick ODI lock on grips & it vibrates less than my mates 690 on road . Fuck the service schedule , drink a beer & change your oil. We absolutely love the 500s as ADV bikes & anything heavier is just not as fun or possible to get to all the places we go

I hear ya mate, horses for courses. I'd probably change my tune if I rode a proper enduro again but the 690 is more than capable pretty much out for the box for what I want to do. But yeah I do get wanting to have an even lighter bike and still be able to extend the range of it. Thanks for the comment 🤘

I was going to say all this! I love mine....I also extend my oil intervals to 50 hours of I have to....but normally 25 hour. The time I did 50 hours the oil still had a lot of red color. Looked good. I also have a 1200gs but live my 450exc 6 days. I've done 400 mile days.....600 kilometers?

I went for the 701 earlier this year. Seat is more comfy than the KTM, and, I have a Husky dealer close by. I fitted the MotoZ Rallz on the rear, much more life than the D606. The Motoz has a magnet inside it, so it attracts nails and screws. I can get 400km's out of the 2 tanks. So Far no issues after 5000 k's. I love the Husky. I'll be riding it to Tasmania in Feb. Had the T7 for 2 1/2 years then sold it for a Ktm 890 r adv . That bike has given me so much more confidence off road that I’m using it more and more off road than on road . Now I’m looking for a husky 701 ( basically the same as the gas gas or 690 ) due to the weight will suit my single tracking better and being more adventurous. I’m sure you are making the right move if you need some road work but the main part is off road . 👌

The 2019 model onwards has an advantage since it had a counterbalance installed in the motor and a lot of the vibrations you feel have been eliminated. Should have gone for a 2019 or later model for that reason. Makes it better on the road

I have a 701 with the Onega kit and 500exc set up as an ADV bike. You describe the vices of the 690 perfectly. Biggest disappointment is the gearbox. The 701 has a Nova gearbox for this reason. Expensive yes. Only reason I have it installed is because it’s my toy. But it works. No false neutrals and gear ratios that work. The close ratio is heritage from its application in the duke. You will find you will swap from 14 to 15 on the front depending on how rough you’re thinking. Why the 500, well my young bloke comes out too. I use it for enduro work and rough high country work. The fuel range is 300km and it’s proved it worth having the legs/range to not be restricted for fuel range. Yes it slows it down in the tight but I’m happy with the compromise. The 701 is great for its pure capacity. It can take a load. You can carry fuel. It does boot along. My 701 is the one with the head counterbalancer, so not as viby as yours. It does not have the manners/smoothness as a twin. Yet it happily will cross the country. Simpson, no worries. Going back to the 500 you instantly notice the lightness. 180kg back to 140kg wet. It’s big difference. Like most ADV bikes, it’s the compromise that suits you and I understand your rationale perfectly why the 690 works for you.
@MVDBR11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the input mate good to know, I never really added up the numbers but I figured all the gear on the 500 getting it set up for adv would peg it close to the 690 weight wise. But yeah definitely do what works for you. Cheers mate 🤙

Congrats on your new 690! My 500exc is my adventure/do it all bike and at least 40kg lighter than the 690. I didn't have to add much more weight to adventurise it, just a bigger tank and comfy seat. Also a lot more simpler and more reliable than a 690. I do a quick easy oil change every 3000 km as im not riding extreme enduro or racing. Ive thought about changing to the 690 but the only real reason would be for the more comfortable road riding sections.

Looking forward to more 690 content. Have had an 890 Adventure R in the garage since 2021 when they came out. Picked up a 701 Enduro a few months ago. Never thought I would say this but If I end up with just one "unicorn" adventure bike it will be the 701 Enduro. Exceptional platform (on and off road). I played around with a 500 EXC platform for a bit - it is a trailer bike in my opinion. I am sure you know the 2019+ 690/701 models have less vibration and you don't have to remove the seat to get to the Rade Garage aux fuel tank. I am looking forward to how the fueling drama plays out and your solution. Perhaps it won't bother you. It is rare here in the states to need more than the stock tanks fuel range.

I have a 2017 690 that I use to commute to work as often as possible. It handles the rough city roads and traffic with ease. I’ve thought about trading it in for a newer version or even an SM model since I rarely get off-road but it’s been very reliable and it’s paid for so I decided to keep it. Instead I mounted up a set of Dunlop missions so I wouldn’t have to change the rear tire so often. I change the oil and filters every 3000 miles and keep a close eye on the level in between because it seemed to use some oil in the first 5500 miles. If you’re looking to get rid of the buzz in the bars I recommend BRP’s rubber mounted risers. I bought a Scott’s damper and these risers as a kit and they have eliminated the buzz through the bars. I ditched the stock muffler for a Yoshimura R77 and added a Rottweiler fueling dongle with a foam air filter. Wider pegs, spin on fuel cap, heated grips and bark busters and that’s about it. It’s been a great bike and I have no regrets on its purchase.

hi, I am surprised that you did not buy this motorcycle instead, I sold my T 700 at the end of August 2023 to buy an AJP PR7 160kg 64hp 17 L fuel tank suspension of more than 30 cm all gives a motorcycle much easier to drive off-road with luggage, camping tent, on roads I drive at a cruising speed of 110km/h. it is an adventure motorcycle par excellence. the saddle is super comfortable. a smile on his face all the time. Once again, weight is decisive when you go solo with luggage on off-road trips and in the event of a fall in difficult technical areas you don't have to struggle to pick up the bike. see you soon
@MVDBR11 ай бұрын
Yeah so I was originally going to keep the 500EXC but circumstances changed. I may have gone for a 701 if I knew I was getting rid of the little bike. But yeah at the moment it's not so much about picking up the T7 (it sucks but it's doable) but more about terrain like rocky & sandy shit. I can just charge in on the 690 without hesitation whereas with the T7 I'm very cautious at times haha. But yeah as I get older, picking up the T7 will be more and more of a struggle and less and less worth it 😅 Still love it though and don't want to get rid of her 🍻 cheers
@MrEtnorb11 ай бұрын
A couple of suggestions. You can run the fuel hose from the Radegarage tank to the breather on the fuel cap. The main tank syphons the fuel so no need for the fuel tap and connection to the base of the main tank. Also you don’t need to worry about which order you fill the tanks, I also fitted a quick release fuel connector in the fuel hose under the Radegarage tank. You can then easily remove the tank for maintenance or if you run out of fuel, the tank can be taken by your riding mate to the nearest petrol station, as happened to me. I would consider trimming the front of your seat to expose the fuel cap.

Congratulations on the KTM purchase. I have the Husky 701 which as you say is as near as damn it the same bike. Two years of ownership from new and it's never failed to impress me. I don't have the vibration issues you mention but mine is a 22 plate bike and they did some improvements to the engine balance I understand in 2018 or 2019? I've used mine for tours covering 300 plus miles per day and the standard seat has been surprisingly comfortable. If I switch the ABS off it stays off until I switch it on again but I know on the previous models you had to constantly turn it off after each start of the bike. I have the side stand switch dongle which has worked flawlessly as I understand the side stand switch is quite vulnerable if not bypassed. I'm looking forward to you putting it through it's paces and whether you're on the T7 or the 690 I'll always continue watching as your videos are excellent. 👍

I've had my 2014 690 for 5 years now, Bought it used. Had some problems with the powersupplie for the ECU, but other then that it's been only normal mainenance. If you do a lot of highspeed tarmac on enduro- or gravel tires it's a good thing to have a steeringdampner. Because over 100 km/h it can get wobbley. A minus for the KTM vs the t7 is breakdown in the bush. You can't fit and or replace a major electronical part on the bike with out it thinking it's been stolen. With th T7 you can fix the most things with a steelwire, ducktape and a slegde, and I like that.

I've got a '17 690 and love it. Get anti vibration inserts for the handlebars. I use Highway Dirt Bikes ones and with the Scotts anti-vibration mount, the bars basically don't buzz at all now. I've got a Perun tail rack and my luggage there doesn't get in the way of the fuel filler. The gearbox is very similar to my old 640 Adv's 5 speed, cruising rpm's are the same between the two. If you look at the drop between 5th and 6th gears, it's only 300rpm or so, and it would be nice if KTM fixed that. My riding partner has a T7 and picking that bike up off road really sucks! The 690 is SO much lighter, over 100lbs. I bought mine basically kitted out with rally fairing, Safari tank, etc, etc, which makes it a much nicer adv bike, it's still not as good as the T7 on freeway, but it's so much better off road it's worth it, at least for me.

We all have different wants man. Can't tell you why people buy 500's over the 690s for the kind of ADV'ing I mostly see them used for. I have a big triumph 1200 scrambler gravel hoon & daily, 06 300 EXC shitter/training bike but my serious adv/enduro/desert bike is a CRF450L for one simple reason - TRUST. Took my last XR600R and drowned it in mangrove water & mud up to the tank cap north of Cooktown, following which it finished the full cape york loop no worries, also riden the (BMW) Huskky TR650 out all through little/big desert, finke, arkarula etc and I simply don't trust a number of design points of KTM 690/701's regardless of how well I'd be able to prep/replace known issues, carry spares etc. I only get time for maybe one 5-15 day trip a year and like to make it somewhere new/remote/different so oil change intervals really aren't a huge deal when the bike is for that trip with a +20L tank on it and then a weekend/overnight sub 1500km-a-trip hard adv or enduro bike the rest of the year. It is a very personal thing but I prep all my and often my mates bikes for big trips plus I often have track ambition bigger than my skill level when exploring alone also so often get into hairy shit when out for day/weekend rides. The freedom to rip a single giant loop mojave/coyotoe bag off and have a proper enduro bike to skull drag up a rock step I shouldn't have gone down and the fun of challening myself in that kinda stuff in new places is worth the 1.5-2km oil change to me but it isn''t how many people ride and that's completely fair. Trust in the bike and the freedom to able to get out of up to proper hard enduro stuff by lifting the bike out solo is why I didn't buy a 690/701 but if I had to sell all three of my bikes tomorrow a 701 would be about the only option to serve as a commuter still without being a right pain in the ass so it's a no brainer in that respect :)

On the 2019 model the RADE aux tank actually runs the filler externally between the seat and ignition so the seat doesn't need to be filled to fuel up. I also leave the fuel tap open all tge time with no issues as gravity takes care of balancing to fuel drain on the front and rear tanks. But if you do that, fill the rear first before the front or the front drains into the rear. I know you have the ABS dongle but a cheat is to put a couplenof washers under the rear ABS sensor. I just moves the ABS sensor out far enough to permanently disable both front and rear so you don't need to worry about it. Easy to swap them out if you want to on long road rides if you want to.
@MVDBR11 ай бұрын
Thanks mate yeah might end up doing that with the ABS. Is there any difference between doing that and removing the fuses? Seems like removing the fuses would be easier to switch back and forth 🤔

@@MVDBR I don't think there is much difference however I have big monkey hands that struggle to pull out the fuses so for me its easier to carry a little torx key in the handlebar bag and unscrew the bolt and add a couple of spring washers. Same effort as letting out a couple of PSI.

@@MVDBR they certainly dont look pretty but fantastically functional. The twin tanks and plastics swap very easily so its simple enough to add the extra fuel space when needed and keep the bike looking pretty the rest of the time. The 690 is such a sick bike! We go back to road riding I’ll be thinking hard about getting a 690. Really wish Husky or KTM would deck the 690 out with the old LR fuel tank and a Dakar fairing, THEN it would be the T7 killer😎

Hello Josh, I did exactly the opposite. I sold my 690 enduro r and bought a 1090 R and a Husky 501. In enduro I could not follow the rhythm of the group and on the road the vibrations were really uncomfortable to go far without counting all the rest. For me, it's still a very good bike that does everything well, but it can't replace an enduro bike or a maxi trail bike. Of course, this is just my opinion. Greetings from France Denis

Great comparison against the T7. The T7 like the Africa Twin is heavy and top heavy at that. The T7 is very tall and too much for me. The Africa Twin easy to get my feet down but cramped riding position with high pegs relative to the seat. I bought a 2019 690 and it’s excellent even with 8,500 miles on it. The later engine is very smooth with an extra balancer shaft. Sure the power pulses are what you’d expect from a single but for 100kph cruising really good. The later bike has a shorter seat so the Rade Garage range extender tank fits with its filler proud and easily accessed. That bike is in the US and bought for a 4,000 mile trip next year. I bought a 701 Husky on the strength of the 690 and it’s superb. With stock air filter and exhaust it’s pleasantly quiet. It might replace my 890 Adventure….. (my other half says I don’t need more bikes. She’s right but when did need trump want?!). Happy riding, Ian

my opinion on your query between folk picking 500 and 690 and then extending the 500 for 'adventure': I dare say and this is from talking to lots of folk, height of 690 is one thing as you know - yeah many guys i know fit lower kits but then hate the bike (it looks shi7e too once lowered), another xx hp and about45 kg - lots i know can not face it and are more than wary after seeing people struggle with the 690 in places that may be similar to their zones, 690 platform operates better at speed as well as you will find out - TBF if you cannot physically and mentally match the bike, the 690 is a pretty scary bas7ard when ridden hard, i know this myself and i love it for what it is BUT very few can use a 690 and if folk are on the fence the weight is another reason to go 500/501 - i dont believe in making my 500 into some long tour thing but i know people with a long rack on that mounts to the frame, they remove their shi7 and they are back to the 500 at the destination and have all the crap they want - i have to think about my journey a whole lot more than them....... killer bike - yeah maintenance every 1k is what it is but its a 15 minute job with a beer, i dont have an issue with it myself for what the bike gets me in return. 690 are amazing machines , i just think a lot see them as too much dirtbike and have this fear about that. So then they go the 500 which is an utterly unreal bike (with shi77y downsides on road but so what) OR they go and buy some big bloody twin thinking it is safer to own a T7 / similar over a 690, that makes little sense to me but that is a different discussion
@MVDBR11 ай бұрын
Yeah mate I owned a 2015 500EXC for a few years and absolutely loved it, but I'm not a hard enduro racer and I don't ride that hard so the 690 is a pretty decent compromise for me. Appreciate the comment, cheers 🙌

Hello from Colorado. I have a '23 Husky 701. The newer LC4's with dual balancers are very smooth, vibration isn't much of a concern, the real limitation for road is the wide bars and minimal wind protection, even with a screen. It is fine up to 70 MPH though, above that the wind gets annoying so pretty usable on the road. The stock seat is literally a sore point too, I see you got a Seat Concepts, that should help a lot. I added an O2 sensor delete dongle and also a PC6 with Rottweiler's map exhaling out a Yosh exhaust. The part throttle low and to midrange power is way more with correct fueling via the PC, so much so I was able to gear it up to 16/45 which makes the gearbox no longer feel overly close ratio. The significantly greater power handles the taller gearing fine off road for anything I want to ride the bike on, it would rip on the trails you showed. Fully tune that thing, you won't regret it. For where I live in Colorado the 690 platform is perfect as I ride it to the scenic and often quite challenging 4x4 trails. I also own a 300 XC that I truck to the single track and tougher stuff. It would be great to have both a T7 and the 690 - rob a bank if ya have to 😂
@MVDBR10 ай бұрын
Yeah I got to ride a 23 model 690 the other day, much much smoother 👌 If I was going to use it as an adventure bike that would be the way to go, but I think this is gonna be much more fun as an enduro 😎 PS there's no fucking way I could ride tight single track on that thing with 16/45 gearing without murdering the clutch, I don't see how adding more power would help with that 🤔
@Duken4evr2910 ай бұрын
@@MVDBR Ya don't ride truly tight walking pace single track stuff. In more normal situations I gas it and just churn the tire, it will do it just off idle. The bike is hard on rear tires 😆

@MVDBR11 ай бұрын
I can basically get both my toes down, sometimes the balls of both feet to the ground on the 690 depending how much weight I'm bringing to compress the suspension, which is pretty much the same for me on most bikes. I'm only 5'10 glad I'm not any shorter that's for sure 🤘
