TENKARA Line Holder / Spool HACK - Efficient & Super Cheap- Works for FISHING & FLY FISHING rigs too

I had plans to shoot another TENKARA fishing video… but a surprise snow storm had me change course! Instead, I made a quick video showing how I make my CUSTOM LINE SPOOLS.
After trying to find the perfect Tenkara line holder, one that wouldn't squash my flies, I managed to come up with this super cheap and easy design. This isn't just for TENKARA- this spool concept can be used to pre-rig any FISHING or FLY FISHING setup.

Something I should add- I still take additional flies and tippet with me when I go out- similar too/or repeats of what I’ve got pre-rigged on the spools. My spool ‘system’ is really useful for figuring out what the fish are taking. Once that’s determined, if I lose that fly I will replace it stream side with a match from my box. In short, if I’m struggling to find what’s working, this system helps motivate me to try different patterns more often -than not- since I’m not a big fan of rigging up stream side.

great idea! I use the Tenkara Usa line holder, it's really fuckin sweet. I dig it because it catches the progress of the line as you wrap, so if you stop wrapping for a second, it won't unravel. Also nice because when you're done wrapping, it just holds it in place. It can fit 2 lines on 1 spool. Which i've heard some people use for spare tippet on ultralight days. There's also a small chamber built in, that holds a bunch of flies. For like $12, i'd say they're unbeatable line holders

Not gonna lie might steal this idea for my own spool management I love the tenkara USA keeper but I honestly think your system is much more efficient and also using something you made yourself is always satisfying but yeah take it easy

I personally like the old style Tenkara line holders from wood , environmentally friendly no plastic waste and it looks more professionally .

Brilliant! I just got a pack of the smaller ones that I was going to 3d print some of the plastic "guides" that the Nirvana on the Fly holders use, but this is such a simple, great idea. Just like Tenkara. Thank you!

the little plug @ 2:35 can be used as a wedge to hold the line in place when its in the spool.
