Just want to say "thanks", had my 70th B-day yesterday, and to say that my health is failing would be an understatement. I was blessed to spend many hours doing what your doing, had wonderful parents that loved the outdoors, and being born in Montana didn't hurt! Now, i see the end of my trail, it's great to see your clips and the way you handle these fish. I wish you many wonderful hours/days on clear, cold waters...enjoying the beauty of GOD'S creation! Semper Fi from an old Marine.

Great video, Tristan! And very nice trout for sure. That's exactly what the Mizuchi was designed for, to handle larger trout in very small water and be able to control them the whole way into the net. Congrats!! We'll have to fish that creek together when I get back. It holds some nice surprises for sure! Cheers!

I live in Maine and I cannot believe the size of the fish out west. In Maine a brook that small MIGHT have a 10 inch trout in it but never anything bigger than that. Even our biggest and best rivers rarely have a trout over 18 inches. Bravo.

@TenkaraAddict 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, even when I don't explicitly show it in the video, I always wet my hands before handling each fish. Thanks for watching.
@uncutfishing
@uncutfishing 4 жыл бұрын
Bert Kelly, wetting the hands is indeed important, but let's not pretend the damage to the slime layer isn't done when the fish is landed into the net and is struggling against the mesh. Smaller fish may not only lose slime but also some scales in the process. The net should not be used for them, imho. In fact, if one is indeed concerned about unhooking the fish without harming it more (in addition to the harm already done by the hook and the retrieval stress), the fish should not be touched at all, - see, for example, ikki Lure Fishing channel. Plus, the process must be as fast as possible. But releasing fish like that is difficult. It takes time to master and in some cases may be impossible.... Of course the net will be a better solution then, because it can help shorten the process. I personally try not to touch them and use the net as little as possible, but sometimes it will simply not be pretty and, well, not because the hands are not wet. Sometimes fish will die after being released. That's fishing for you. In general, it is a bloody business. If you hate the idea of killing animals - don't even consider this hobby. So, imho, we just need to strive towards some ballance, some raeasonable minimization of damage, even if it can never be zero. I'm, for example, terrified by the large motorised boats that are so popular (especially in North America). On the one hand, people are using barbless hooks and carefully releasing everything, on the other - they are speeding in these roaring behemoths in remote lakes or salmon rivers freaking out wild life and crushing fish left and right. But haven't seen a discussion on this issue anywhere on YT (so far). Let's try and see the full picture, not just the dry hands. BTW, an OT remark: I wouldn't call the first large fish I got - or any fish I got, for that matter - my biggest ever. Unless I was going to quit fishing, of course ;)
@charlieswearingen500
@charlieswearingen500 4 жыл бұрын
Trout secrete a glycoprotein slime from the cells in their skin to make it harder for parasites (fungus, bacteria and it's part of their natural immune system) to attach. It helps to wet your hands but if trout are to hopefully survive after a catch and release they should be unhooked while held underwater to more effectively preserve the protective slime layer. Also, small gill capillaries are damaged by touch and dry air when fish are handled for too long outside of the water. The loss of gill capillaries will decrease trout vigor and his ability to deal with the harsh elements in the wild...

@cnyangler1770 4 жыл бұрын
Oh and by the way for those of you in the Pacific Northwest, the salmon you guys pull up may be better eating, but at least in lake ontario we don’t have to deal with crazy, hard to follow regulations, emergency fisheries closures or possession limits beyond the daily creel limit. Also we don’t have to deal with catch record cards and different fisheries zones, we have one set of lake regulations and we have one set of tributary regulations with maybe two or three exceptions for all Lake Ontario tributaries on the New York side.
