Did anyone notice that this dance only tells their love story from beginning to end? Jane had a life where she could not do what she wanted because of the society's system and her economic status, dancing in a disillusioned and unhappy way being pushed to be with someone she does not love, just for money. Tom appears and it is when her dance comes to life, a romance awakens in them that they do everything to be together despite the fact that she must be dancing with another, the circumstances that surround him, the dancers and their families. However, there comes a time when being together and holding hands, they observe each other in anguish, because it is not enough to be in love and the circumstances are stronger that end up separating and return to the same place, only with them being able to look at each other from a distance knowing that they can never be together. That is the power of analysis. Sad, but it's a beautiful movie.

What's truly amazing is that all the girls who are in love with this scene (myself included) can find such romance and flirtatiousness and deep feelings in such a small thing as a dance, because the dance, in our minds, is not a small thing. It is a glorious thing when shared between two people who love each other. Now, the only matter that needs to be settled is how guys don't watch this and think to themselves, "Wow, girls like this stuff. I should be like that guy!"

What a masterful use of music and how cleverly it reflects Jane’s mood and emotions. When she is dancing with Wisely, bored and listless, the music sounds flat, out of balance. And when she finds herself facing Lefroy, all her senses awakened, the harsh sound of the steps on the parquet floor suddenly fade, and the music becomes rich and balanced. Beautiful.
@monmothma3358 Жыл бұрын
I think we might just perceive the music differently after the emotional change. I checked again, but I can't hear any difference, the steps on the floor don't fade
@danaemcburney41609 ай бұрын
@@monmothma3358 I listened to it again without looking. The footsteps and the rustle of the crowd DO fade out as Jane and Tom dance. Also the music becomes richer and more layered. I'm not enough of a music person to detail what's going on with it, but pre-Tom it sounds more like a 4-piece orchestra and with Tom it sounds like a larger orchestra.

I think at the beginning she's desperately looking for him in the crowd of many nameless faces. She's looking for that familiar face that somehow might quicken the time at this horrendous gathering. Desperately glancing about, not even sure herself what she's looking for, but she knows she want him. And there came he, to the rescue of her, with hint of a smile. Oh how she has come to love that smile, that smile that light up this dull, preposterous party. At last she felt content, and complete somehow, gazing about at her rescuer-with pleading eyes full of love. The love she had expressed for the first time, to her surprised he returned it with an amused and lovely smile again. So began the dance, in rhyme older than time.

I love this scene. In the beginning her eyes are searching for him hoping he is there. She is longing for real love and meaning in the dreary soulless environment she is in, where status and power are the only prized attributes. In the first part of the dance she is awkward and lifeless wanting it to end, then when she sees lafroy she comes to life! His smile saying he feels the same when seeing her. This is what love is, finding someone who makes us excited for life and brings us joy in a world that can be wearisome. Someone who makes your face light up like this. A vivid colour in a black and white existence.

I know there is a lot of talk about that smirk (but seriously... wow 😍), but I can't be the only one that noticed the way McAvoy looks away from her on the last moment of the dance (2:08). His serious and almost grave expression are such a strong contrast to the playful and carefree energy he brings when he first appears in the dance. During the last 30 seconds or so of the dance (when they are walking together and his hand is on her back) neither of them is smiling anymore, and I think it was a very nice way the movie showed the transition from flirtation to love. The playful banter that ruled the first part of their relationship suddenly becomes the more serious and intense love (and the sacrifices and hardships that come with it) that ruled the second part. When McAvoy blinks to look away from her, lips slightly parted as if surprised (2:08), it feels like he just realized how much he came to love her and is very surprised by the force of his emotion

But gosh that hand on the small of her back, she would be SO aware of it! And those constant glances gosh growing love, hope and the reassurance of the return of feelings! 🤩😍🥰

The payoff in this scene is even bigger (if at all possible) when you see it with the previous one. Jane has been tirelessly and feverishly looking for Tom (McAvoy), ever since she arrived at the ball. He's been all she could think of - yet he's been nowhere to be seen. At this point, she's given up, which is why she looks so lifeless. Resigned to her prison of societal expectations. And THEN Tom shows up.
@Calenethuil22 жыл бұрын
The name of this English country dance is Hole in the Wall. The music fits, although it's usually played faster. They also changed the second half of the steps to give Jane and Lefroy more interaction time. Nevertheless I love to dance that one during our Jane Austen balls and I always love to try and recreate the smooth dance progressions that McAvoy does here. It's really magical to dance to the tune with a live orchestra and with everyone wearing regency costumes.
