At that time, there was no "English" accent (I will assume you mean RP which came into existence in the 1920s by BBC for broadcast). There were and are MANY English accents and dialects, over 30 at present. Most historians will agree that American accents are closer to the accents of the various dialects of England reflecting where and when the settlers originally came from (Midlands, West Country, etc.). British English began a major shift in the mid-1800s while American English kept its original accents and dialects.
