Europe's great powers carved up Africa amongst themselves during the late 19th/ early 20th centuries in what's called the Scramble for Africa. Yet, one major power which was absent from the conquests was the Russian Empire. To find out why, watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

Brilliant. As always. You continue to surprise and amuse. Never knew there were quite so many sinister yet hilarious ways to make a "soon" face with cartoon block men. You've got the narrowed eyes and sideways glances down to an art form. Also laughed out loud at skipping through the daisies of Suez and Gibraltar, and at "la nôtre". Also loved the detail of the black and white portraits. Top class, as usual from you. 100/10. Keep them coming!! And thanks so much for all your hard work on these :D

2:09 - It was my understanding that the selling of Alaska wasn't so much about needing cash as it was coming to terms with reality. Russia realized it probably wasn't going to be able to hold on to Alaska as British ambitions in Canada crept ever closer and they did not want it to spark another clash with Britain (like the recent Crimean War, which went badly for them). The Russians would only lose yet more territory and influence. Also, Alaska wasn't too profitable anyways and it was hard to administer and protect due to its distant location. So they sold it -- but to stick it to the British they sold it to the Americans, knowing that the British probably didn't want Alaska badly enough to challenge the Americans for it.
@smalltime0
@smalltime0 5 ай бұрын
There is actually an argument that the federal government, to this day, loses money in Alaska. Almost nobody lived there until the gold rush ~30 years after the purchase, which benefitted the state - but not the federal coffers. Alaska gets to keep (depending on the field) over 90% of its oil and gas revenue and has been a net recipient of federal aid for the construction of infrastructure and for cleanups and rebuilding of the various disasters that have plagued it. The senators it sends are notorious for placing earmarks for funding of pet projects that benefit the state, but not much else. Ironically its one of the more conservative states, especially for social programs but seems to revel in pork barrelling. Russia made a strategic call -it would not have been able to defend the colony from Britain's Canadian colonies/colonists, and they got to make money in the process. The vast majority of the settlers there moved back into the Empire, notably to Siberia. Even if they somehow made the colony work, it'd be about 150 years before they could theoretically have made a profit.

That may be more true than you perhaps realize. The Russians do a lot of thinking. Their writing style is generally dark, bleak, moody. They play a lot of chess. I was in the US Army and spent two years in Alaska, a similar climate. During the winter everything was dark, bleak, moody, gloomy. We played a lot of chess. There were very few writers among us. Some of us lost our minds. I suppose I was one of them. Bwahahahaha, cackle, giggle (accompanied by finger burbling sounds), hee, heee, heee, heee. Oh, god!

FFS, Russia has barely colonized itself within the current borders: most of the towns in Western and North-Eastern Siberia were established just 40 years ago and depopulated since the fall of USSR as they need development investments. Yes, I Agree. Besides the Red and the Arabic Seas, there was Constantinople. Russia would have to fight 2 big and even more voracious Empires (and the Turks, again) to do so.
