The other common trick for miter saw dust collection is to build a permanent station for it and build a hood around it. If you're going to keep it in the shop, that's a pretty good option.
@CrossCultural-c7f2 жыл бұрын
I will have to say: the miter saw makes all kind of sawdust! Our maker space has hood plus a slanted sort of gray that attempts to direct the sawdust to the vacuum. That is reasonably effective *if* users remember to turn on the switch to the giant vacuum in the shop. I like the idea of having a smaller dedicated shop vac for the miter saw. The frosting on the cake would be to plug the saw & vacuum to a switch that turns the shop vac on when the miter saw turns on. And be sure to have one of those cyclone dust collector sort of set up that will keep suction power high.

Funny guy asking where you get your saw blades! I agree with you on work - I'm 80 yrs. old, and mow my lawn with a hand-pushed rotary lawnmower. I also rake my lawn with a hand rake, sweep off my sidewalk with a broom, and trim my tree limbs with a bow saw, for the same reason you do your physical labor - to stay physically fit. Never saw the logic in using labor saving devices around home, and then go to a gym for exercise, when just doing the exercise around home is time saving and cheaper. Love your show, and especially your comments when you get tongue-tied or make verbal flubs - do it myself all the time.

letting the saw throw the dust out the back puts way too much fine stuff into the air and then into your lungs. a small shop vac and small vortex generator will do the trick. I paid about $19 for my vortex, the 5 gal bucket was free at the home center and the lid was about $1.99. Since Shop Vac went out of biz about 4 new brands jumped into that space and they are always battling for the sale so they are pretty cheap.

I have a cardboard shield and a 20 gallon tote bin under the saw - about 80% = messy ... but if you heat up a piece of PVC, you can make it fit for both the saw and the hose - takes a bit of cussing to make it all fit - so mic off (lol) An option for the chicken run - you can run saw mill waste through a chipper and put that in there - they love it. (pigs too if anyone keeps those - my neighbor was a pig farmer and he had a couple local tree service companies dump their chips when they are working in the area....saves them fuel not hauling a truckload of chips back to base)

@alwayssearching18822 жыл бұрын
I have the same miter saw and it sucks as far as dust is concerned. Cutting pressure treated or wood that is slightly wet immediately clogs the small evacuation tube. I'm constantly having to clean it out but not the bag. If I were to put it in a permanent place I would put the saw on a separate shop vac hooked directly to the evacuation tube. Maybe you can make or find an adapter that fits the end of the evacuation tube that flares out to the size of your current dust collection system. Another option is remove the evacuation tube and have the dust collect into an angled hood that is connected to your new collection system.

I've never worked with Walnut in any way except to eat them. As a retired landscaper, I've used various types of wood for mulching at the client's request, and sometimes the sawdust/clips from some sort of wood project of theirs. Softwoods are usually easy on the plants (roots) but hardwoods tend to be more problematic. My roomy listened to your commentary and added, "Walnut does not allow for worm development" I wouldn't know, he's from up north and I'm down here in the south, two different worlds. But it got me to thinking; down here developers use slash pine straw as a mulch, it's cheap. Problem is, the straw leaches the resin and changes the Ph so much that the roots atrophy, and gradually the plant dies. The beauty of a proper mulch is that it builds up the beds over time as it breaks down. Perhaps Walnut affects the Ph in adverse ways, too.

My chop saw sits on a shelf that is more like a box. From the fence forward the sides are slightly below the level of the table. There is enough of a front to enclose as much as I can and yet be able to turn and tilt the saw. Some sort of fabric might work better for that. There is a slot in the bottom back for the dust collection. The dust naturally sculpts itself inside the box. Works reasonably well.

An entry level, Technician Amateur radio license is pretty easy to obtain. It allows you privileges on the VHF-UHF range which is where you encounter local folks only. The equipment is fairly cheap and all VHF-UHF transceivers have a scanner feature. Normally these radios have to be programmed with the locally used frequencies but that's pretty painless with CHIRP software or included software or manually programming according to the included instructions. There are clubs in your north eastern TN to assist.

I have an identical mitre saw and discovered that unless you hook it up to a very high power vacuum, a shop vac does not have ample suction through the oem tube. I had to engineer up a three port vacuum each on separate 1 1/2 hoses attached to a three-way pvc Y connection into the shop vac. two of the three hoses were installed underneath the saw toward the back to collect the sawdust going off the sides. the center and third hose connected to the oem port tube. I still am only able to collect 75% of the sawdust, with the remaining going off to the side and behind the saw work station.

I recall that when we cut walnut, the farmers that normally fought for sawdust, would not take it. I heard it was because it would stain the cows if they laid down in it, Don't know about toxicity but I don't doubt it. I no longer saw walnut, even for friends. Always lose money on it and I get vertigo from the dust.

Sawdust is not good for chickens. It’s too fine for them. Shaving from a planer could work but never use walnut . You are correct , it’s toxic to animals. Love your channel. Never miss an episode!!

HI, you might want to check out miter saw tents, they work very well espcially with a shop vac. Oh, I think Rigid is one of the best values for the buck (shop vac). Keep on smiling.

Amen on everything you said about hard work. That’s what’s wrong in this world too many people got a touch of lazy in them these days. Keep up the hard work Nathan. We love you for it.

Great video my friend. Sure has been hot and dry. We got quite a thunderstorm last night which sure did help with the Temps.

I agree with you--making the decision about labor-saving devices is always personal. For example, I'd love to still be making bread totally by hand, but the arthritis I have now says "Not if you want to be able to do anything else in the day!" so my best pal Kitchen-Aid does that work for me. But I still do most of the garden work by hand because I can change up my grip enough to prevent a major flareup, which will leave me pretty well useless for 24-48 hours. I will, however, confess to loving the battery-powered hedge trimmer I finally broke down and bought this year to help keep the neighbor's crazy invasive Japanese hyacinth and rose of sharon from storming over the fence and taking over my yard. Makes quick work of it and I can get on to other things rather than spending an entire afternoon swearing at branches. 😂 (And I hope the question about blades was just being silly rather than serious!)

"What kind of saw blades are you using" 🤣The shop is coming together, I would love to have that much room.

Love your attitude and thought process and honesty. I know you can use pine sawdust for chickens

Exactly right about work. Work keeps you healthy and nothing wrong with laboring in any way. Something the young men of today need to learn.
