Tennessee Spring Squirrel Hunt 2021

Tennessee offers a spring squirrel season each year. This year I decided to try my luck again where I hunted last year, but did not score in the morning, so I decided to go to a fruiting mulberry tree, and that's where I encountered squirrels feeding on the ripe berries. Come join me on a warm spring day in May, and lets see if the vintage .22 gun and ammo is up to the task.

What a great way to enjoy my morning coffee! We're still in Ukraine (Mulberry trees everywhere in the cities), but will be home in Maine the end of June. We only have Fall squirrel hunting for Greys, but year round open for Reds. I plan to set up a blind with a feeder as I don't have permission yet for the woods out back. Just have to decide which .22 to take for the first time.

Makes a decent wine too. Made better by adding elderberry to up tannin levels. Of course I have to freeze some to wait for the elderberry harvest in late August, early September.

That's interesting. I have made cough syrup with elderberry by following an old European recipe which uses honey and a bit of liquor. Thanks for sharing your advice.

I found a small box in the basement full of Rem and CCI 22 shorts. Some were my Dad's. I plan on using them in my 582 this fall. Zero at 25 yards should be perfect. My rod and gun club has sections of woods for hunting and this set up seems perfect for in there.

I always enjoy your squirrel hunting videos and the fact you use 581 Remingtons. I've used Remingtons since the 70's, and even today, I still own 2 - 581's, 2 - 572 pumps and the 513T. Having grown up and hunted in the South decades ago, your videos always take me back to my younger days walking and sitting with my 581 while squirrel and other hunting in those deep hardwoods. Sadly, most of those vast timberlands have been clear cut and planted in pine trees.

Thanks for the video. Here in Kentucky we have spring squirrel season and it's difficult with a 22 but that makes it more fun and I use a ruger 77/22 or a ruger American 22 both are great

Have really enjoyed your videos I like to squirrel hunt in the fall with a 22 when they are cutting nuts I use a cz 457 24 inch barrel it’s more accurate than the guy holding it. If I get 2-3 I am happy camper. You may have seen this product Primos trigger stick about $100 but it’s really nice if you hunt squirrel with a 22 just thought I would mention it. I have been on the lookout for a 581 or 541for a few months got my buddies looking to I am sure I will eventually run across one. Thanks again

Tulip tree buds and blossoms are very sweet. It's actually a species of magnolia, not a poplar, though the lumber industry sells it as a poplar.

I’m looking forward to the Virginia Spring Squirrel season, June 5 - 19. Your videos have gotten me hooked on squirrel hunting again after a long hiatus. Also, peaked my interest in the Remington 581. Since viewing your squirrel hunting videos from last year, I’ve bought two 581’s and one 582. Still looking forward to the video on how you modify the 511 magazines for the 581. Can’t understand why Remington offered the 541, 581, 77, and 10C with those common plastic magazines.

I have always wanted to hunt Cheatham WMA. It's about 30-40 minutes from my location. Try looking for poplar trees mixed in with other hardwoods. If you can find a mulberry tree that has fruit, you hit the jackpot. Early morning until about 10:30 is a good time to go. Sometimes afternoon hunts can be good. Scout areas of mixed hardwoods, stop and listen for squirrel movement and chatter. You should be able to find squirrels just about anywhere in that WMA, as long as you find the food. The cool days we have had lately are a real bonus for spring squirrel hunters.
