There are very few golf instructors on KZbin that can actually explain what happens in a good golf swing. It’s ironic that one of the few who can is actually a tennis instructor. This is really helpful for either sport. A+

Camping around the US preparing for the tour? Fantastic! Would love to see more of that country some time, touring in a camper like yours. Yep, a lot of similarities in producing a good golf and tennis swing, baseball too. I find older students who have played a lot of golf can soon improve their tennis strokes once you help them link the two. I only wish I had the time (and money) to play more golf, here in Japan!

Played tennis my whole life but just started picking up golf. I remember first time on the driving range I got told to put my heels to the ground but my muscle memory was tippy toes 😂

Good comparison. I am actually going now through process of improving my golf and tennis swings . There are some similarities. My Tennis rotation on toes actually do quite a bit of damage to a golf swing .

Yeah mate, staying on your heels seems wrong for a tennis player. Check out my last video I throw in another golf comparison at the end.

Did I get your idea right, that any baseline tennis stroke is felt as following? The motion starts from the 1) back leg, 2) then just A BIT of shoulders turn to accelerate the arms (help them to generate speed while making sure they are relaxed to avoid muscling the ball) = speeding the arms up stage, 3) then one hits the ball and only at this stage the shoulders catch up the arms - one fully commits/engages the shouders to ensure extension and the follow trhough, 4) a completion of the weight transfer from the back leg to the front one (an important details - from the heel to the toe) + recovery step with the back leg. Hope my English is not too heavy and you could get the idea.

I am not a golf coach, but not sure your description of the golf swing is correct. Modern golf teaching emphasises the primacy of body rotation to create club head speed, arms only change position, in relation to the body, at the last moment; not as you demonstrated with the club head forward of the hands at contact - the classic ‘flip’. I could well be wrong, but just a thought. I am always amazed how similar golf and tennis are in terms of use of the kinetic chain. Just a pity I cannot use them correctly myself!
@TomAllsopp3 жыл бұрын
The club head definitely needs to be behind the ball at contact. As a tennis player I used to turn so much but leave the hands behind and slice it. I have to make sure my club beats my body to the ball. But yes you gotta compress it!

My favorite topic is the similarities in side on sports including baseball. In the golf swing or the tennis stroke there is a moment when the body stops the arms catch-up and fly by. It’s physics and the guys that sat otherwise don’t know anything

Better than this is the Inverted golf swing to a tennis serve. Something you need to learn: the 6-actions of the wrist starting from the neutral wrist, which is not an action of the wrist, but instead the movement of the forearm. The golf swing involves two wrist actions dorsi-flexion (backswing) to palmar-flexion (forward swing). Instead of a pronated tennis serve the Inverted Golf Swing can function as an even more powerful tennis serve. Try it out. Again physics in action.
@TomAllsopp3 жыл бұрын
You have any demonstrations of this?
@drbonesshow13 жыл бұрын
@@TomAllsopp You can do this yourself starting with the traditional underhand golf swing, which any golfer will tell you involves wrist flexion on the backswing and extension during the forward swing (mostly after impact - the result of momentum). Now invert this motion (i.e., turn it upside down) and hit a dorsi-flexion palmar-flexion tennis serve. Go to a football field and see how far you can hit a tennis ball using this strategy. I have the world record for hitting a ball through the air. Measured at William Paterson University (2019). However, there is a physics trick to what I do based on principles in aerodynamics. I also used to long-toss a baseball upwards of 400 feet way-back-when I played pro ball. Yes, before you were born.

@@TomAllsopp Like I said. Go to a football field (or a tennis court from fence-to-fence is 40 yards) and see how far you can hit a tennis ball underhand and then overhand. Let me know how far you think you hit the ball. Then I will surprise you.
