As usual, as good as it gets. I love how you guys emphasized treating the 1 hander as almost a 2 hander until the very last second of the move to contact. That is pretty much the essence of the 1 hander, the 2 arm spread done dynamically. The only way to do in dynamically is to have your hands together, a la both hands on the racquet, until the last possible second.

Thanks a lot guys! I just started to take tennis lessons a few weeks ago and my coach is teaching me double handed backhand. Now I want to try if I am able to do single handed backhand. Your thorough tutorial forehand video has helped me a lot to better understand different elements of the technique- thank you so much, Simon and Alex!

The slingshot analogy is brilliant. It’s all “just” physics. The energy transfer explanation as well - so simple it’s genius. Will try it this wkend.

This is a great video on one hand mechanics. I like hearing and watching drills, no matter how basic it may look. Little technique adjustments go a long way. Been getting back into Tennis after some years now. Mechanics need a good refresher! More content on one hand backhands... Please!

Great lesson!! How do you deal with a high too spin ball when using a one hander?
@LunarEclipsism1
@LunarEclipsism1 3 жыл бұрын
There are essentially 4 options, in order of difficulty from easiest to most complex to execute: (1.) Respond with a slice backhand, which has a high-to-low swingpath that won't be as encumbered by a high ball, and will give you some time to recover while you respond defensively. (2.) Back up significantly and let the ball drop down past its apex so you can strike it at a more comfortable height. The cost of this approach is that you are giving up a lot of court position, if you don't hit a very strong shot from here you're going to be in trouble on the next ball. (3.) Move in and take the ball on the rise, before it reaches its full height off the bounce. This requires impeccable timing and is a higher risk shot, but it allows for aggressive play. (4.) Take a running leap upwards towards the ball and strike a one-handed backhand in mid-air, a la Denis Shapovalov. This will allow you to physically raise your strikezone vertically so that you can swing aggressively at a high ball. It is (obviously) an advanced technique for very athletic players and carries many additional risks, like potentially injuring your knees, ankles or feet if you mis-time the shot or fall.
@ericstandridge167
@ericstandridge167 3 жыл бұрын
I personally like blocking the ball back on high balls. I take a potential high ball and turn it into a short bounce of that makes sense. Same swing path as a low ball. Keeps me on the baseline and takes time my opponent thought they had away. Takes timing and practice though

It's like you guys are locksmiths that have keys know one else seems to have in their belt! Extrodinary teaching. The slingshot! I'm going to go out there and breath out the word "slingshot" for each groundie today. Still working on the breathing... it is so important and you guys taught us that too. Keep slipping in little ways for us to remember theses 🔑 fundamentals as you build us into players. Breathing, Head still at contact, split steps. Thanks for all of these critical 🔑 you guys are giving us. We are GRATEFUL!!!!!

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Yes, what type of strings on what racquet at what tension. Is there a system we should use. This is all still a mystery after 20 years! @peterwilliam8135

Absolutely superb! exposition of all elements of how to perfect the one handed backhand. Have been working on exactly this form for over a month by using self feeding. The unit turn of the shoulder plus creating leverage by dropping the racquet head down and pulling the racquet is done beautifully here. I find that getting the correct contact point in front is crucial in getting the ball to go over the net at a height of about 4.5 ft from the ground with a lot of spin. The one thing that could be emphasized a bit more perhaps is the role of the head - i.e in keeping it very still all through the contact point. I find this extremely difficult to do - looking up - messes up the shot completely . Anyways I cannot thank you enough ! for this absolutely wonderful 10 min. instruction video- Have been following your channel for a few years now !. and learning from it a lot!.. My game is improving even now. !

The most intelligent way to make someone copied one of the skill wise strokes; one-handed backhand! I was already applying that slingshot effect to my slice and it is an element that helps slice to be a transition shot between defence and offence. After watching this wonderful video of you, I recently tried it on my backhand and the result was clumsiness. Maybe I exaggerated it a bit the slingshot effect. My one-handed backhand has consistency matter; it is too good or frame gets it the as well and the ball lands quite sloppy. And sometimes I can not exactly put the ball where I wanted. My forehand never has that issue.

I find that the trickiest part of ohbh is the racket drop, lack of it rather. If you don’t know how to drop it you tend to swing straight to the ball with a flat forward swing that kills the topspin one handed backhand. One crucial thing is that you need to keep the off hand on the racket while it’s dropping ( as mentioned in the video ). But the real crucial thing is that you also need to actively bring/drop the racket down with your off hand as well. If you leave that part to gravity or your hitting hand, good luck with getting a proper racket drop!

The great videos just keep coming! Any possibility of following this with a detailed explanation from Alex as to how a one hand returns aggressively against a big flat server - like Simon. I probably have this in one of the courses already - not sure - but looking to get away from resorting to the chip for defense or the two-handed block for stability. Alex worked it against Fed, so I know there is some timing and technique there that would be fun for all the OHB players to hear. Best!

I was recently being attacked by a ball machine and after about a million balls (could be an exaggeration) I was feeling a little knackered and then I realised!! how important and comfortable to let the left had do the heavy lifting, so now feeling relaxed I continued with another million better backhands. Thanks for a great backhand video and I will try to practice that almost two hander, Good to see a bit of green in the UK (God bless the developers)

Alex, could you make a video on your forehand?

Great. Can you make an episode on how to avoid getting to close to the ball for the one-handed backhand. I find the timing to be much more difficult than w the forehand.

Could you also do one for 2 handed backhand players? I struggle with my backhand.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thank you for asking. I have single-handed backhand so I appreciate this course. But I also suffer from some serve problems that I have not found anyone to address. I have a pinpoint serve stance where I tend to come in with my backfoot too much in front on the right side of the left foot. I do not know how to train to get rid of this. I have tried to put some obstacle on the right side so that I can avoid putting my right foot in the wrong position, but it does not really work well enough. I saw some of your videos addressing this issue to some extent where you Simon argued for the need to get the right foot in earlier in the kinetic chain. If you could find out something on this topic it would be great!
