Have you ever lost a big lead in a match! Have you ever wondered why you lost it? In this video, I'm going to explain what happens mentally that cause you to lose a match and what to do about it. If you can focus on staying in the present when you play, you'll start finishing your match with wins instead of big losses.

Very accurate description of how it feels being up and wanting for the win to come to you without much effort and getting yourself into tough situation...

The thing I'm trying to do is to not play the score (to an extent) and just play the point. Obviously if I'm losing bad I might just get my serves in more and be more consistent and make them win, but if I'm up, I have to just ignore the score and play to win. I've been playing with that mindset more and been winning more consistently.

This is me every game. My friends call me the Deuce because every game whether I am serving or returning usually ends up at deuce. I end up having a long back and forth but I struggle closing out games or converting the break point.

I won an interesting match last week where I won the 1st set 6-4 and won it with a break. I had all the momentum I could ask for and then my 1st serve disappeared. I was down 3-5 in the 3rd and had survived on my 2nd serve and return. By the time I got to 5-5, I was physically outlasting my opponent. I couldn't hit a serve or a winner but all I could do was survive and it worked out for me this time. My knees and elbow were NOT happy with me afterwards however, lol.

Easier to say than follow them. Yesterday I lost a match from 5-1, I had 7 set points and lost them all...its so frustrating. My opponent had the widest grin possible. Will try to do as you said and hopefully will be on the winning side next time.

I was up 5-1 in both sets the other day, final score 7-6(7-5),6-4 Managed to get the win but I changed a winning formula, tight, passive, hoping for my opponent to give it to me.

@@weednate i felt horrible and extremely disappointed that I allowed myself to be 5-1 and only win it 7-6. Also I didn't have set point. I did get the next set 6-1 though soa couple of massive momentum swings int he game

Issue is with not able to close the set. Actually closure of the set is MORE HARDER than the whole efforts you have put until the closure point arrives. Sometimes, some.....times its easy to close the set off BUT NEVER EASY FOR MOST OF THE TIMES YOU REALLY HAVE TO CLOSE. Most of the best & hard opponents that you face will give their heavy fights when YOU arrive at the closure points. So NOTHING reallyyy matters until you actually CLOSE it off in the provided time that you get.💯

Just the nature of tennis scoring can give a false confidence, especially at the lower levels, where consistency of play is much more volatile. Being up 6-0, 3-1 with the opponent on serve, looks and feels like you've built an insurmountable lead, but in reality, you're basically only up a break. Its also hard to accurately reflect on how you are winning points while in the middle of a match. It can be easy to take for granted double faults and missed aggressive returns by the opponents. Both of which may be "fixed" mid-match.

the lesson of this is also, that you NEVER should give up, being 2:5 behind. fight and see, maybe the opponent gets victim of his nerves

Kevin, I think how matches are won and lose is a very complicated subject. You cited one case. But sometimes there you are left with a question mark. For instance, some players feel the tension of the moment and tighten up, no amount of coaching or strategy change can save them. Some players need the tension to keep them alert and could benefit from a strategy change. Some players choke the entire match and look pitiful. Everyone has a talent level, if you don't achieve your potential, then there's something mental that is preventing you. If you are a pro, it could be that you need a better coach or hire a sports psychologist. But there's no guarantee that you can fix anything. Medvedev lost the US Open and AO badly enough that he hired a sports psychologist and then proceeded to win the Open. However, he lost again in the AO being up 2 sets. So did the sports psychologist help? Maybe or maybe not.

Totally agree! A lot of times the tension comes from thinking about the future. Thanks

No. Don’t agree with lots said here. Lots of reasons for losing leads in matches. Thinking of someone holding a gun to a family members head doesn’t do it

I tried the 4 / 2. 2/ 4 trick . My opponent heard and changed the score . I lost 🤣 The family member trick. We'll that's one for a professional psychiatrist to comment on 😀 A better option would be to pretend your Rafa Nadal. Grunts. B*tt picking and all!
