i just found out about "crossing the line" on my own a couple weeks ago. Super important for dealing with fast shots or heavy topspin, as I was even doing that panic slapping motion Kevin pointed out. But now it's gone forever! I would even go further than crossing the line by making sure you bend down at the hips to really help you get under the ball to prevent the panic slap from ever happening.

Thank you! But why doesn’t anyone talk about how unique thiems straight arm preparation OHBH is? It is so unique / every other pro uses their arm bent in prep. And every other ohbh struggles with high bouncing balls (although some like roger 17 stepped in). Thiem is the only one who had all the freedom benefits of a ohbh and also had a very stable arm so he can hit across the batt almost like a baseball bat. I’ve got a bent arm prep too and it helps a lot with spin but not well on flatter balls - it’s got many more moving parts. So backfoot or over the shoulder is much harder. Thiems backhand could be a ohbh model for the future - I think it’s to do with him having a 2hbh early on before transitioning to a one hander

Great job on this analysis. I just wouldn't try to time such a large take back for the average mortals. Its not easy to do. Keep the rest and make it more compact until that has been mastered then go bigger.

Mere mortals like us can only dream to hit Thiem’s monster backhand. The issue with most rec players is that they don’t understand how to hit with spin. Quite a mystery how to teach someone the right technique.

To be honest not sure if club players should be “trying to hit backhands” like Thiem. The guy swings out of his shoes the ball will be in the back fence for most club players

Thiems racquet arm is straighter from the start than most others and looks like it’s storing energy from the start to. I wonder if this would be harder or easier for beginners to try to use as a model. Any thoughts on that mate?

Kevin, thank you for Thiem's backhand analysis. I love his one-hand backhand almost as much as Stan's backhand. As always, great job on this video.
