Wow! I had a Pro instruction yesterday, and was told I should pronate more, making the racket face the right fence when finishing, ending the serve on the right side of my body Imidiately gave me a great feeling of easy power! But also made my balls go mysteriously to the right! After watching this video I realize I only pronate halfway, and I will start working on full pronation imidiatly Thanks a lot, and greetings from Denmark :-)

Great video Simon! not enough people talk about SUPINATION, without it pronation is virtually imposible and you're likely to get an injury on your shoulder and or wrist. Raonic's preparation on his serve is a great example of wrist flexion and extension and supination to pronation (Some of this big servers have insanely flexible shoulders).
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial7 жыл бұрын
You're spot on. In fact all players work on shoulder flexibility and increasing range of motion. Sampras had one of the best racket drops as he was so flexible in that shoulder joint

For full pronation to occur at the highest speed possible, full or close to full supination is required to give the extra forearm snap.

Great video! Are there any drills to go from supination to pronation?
@Better_Call_Raul2 жыл бұрын
Simon, yes there is pronation on the slice serve to contact and following contact. But many high level players will hit a slice serve with pronation but ultimately finish with palm in a supinated position. Is this palm up finish on a slice serve something that should happen naturally on a slice serve? I slice with pronation but can't really get the palm up finish correct. 🤔
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial2 жыл бұрын
The full pronation will occur only after contact and can help the slice serve as the racket head will keep accelerating through the contact zone, however, as you say, many players don’t pronate fully on their slice serve. If you work on it, hopefully it will come naturally
@Better_Call_Raul2 жыл бұрын
Yes, finish the pronation after contact. And finally, at the very end of the service motion, finish with the palm facing slightly upwards (in a *supinated* position). To be clear, this happens at the very end of the service motion, long after contact. But this palm up finish is what helps imparts the sidespin during the contact phase. On a flat serve, the palm will finish more downwards compared to the slice serve.
@alenx54557 жыл бұрын
Some people say you should think about supination and pronation, while others say if everything in the swing before has proper mechanics it should occur naturaly, what do you think?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial7 жыл бұрын
If it happens naturally, why don't most club players do it properly even if they serve with the correct grip? It's something that takes lots of work, in a very controlled way. I can only speak from my own experience when playing myself (it took me lots of work to fully master this movement) and now coaching players of all ages and levels, I have had one student who just had it right from the start. A 4 year old boy who could serve straight away with a continental grip and control the racket face so well that he used pronation on serve. One child. And that kid was the most talented child I've ever come across in my coaching to date (10+ years full time). Everyone else has had to teach their body how to do it, and it takes time with lots of small steps. All the other elements that would initiate the natural movement also take years to master so either way it is lots of work. But it should come to a point that you have ingrained the motion so it happens naturally without having to think about it when serving in a match
@claudioprado3896 жыл бұрын
The easiest way to get pronatiom properly is thinking, the movement "on edge", at the begining as a continuous movement from start to the end of the serve and not pronating just at the last moment before hitting the ball, when I do that I get better results.

We all pronate, BUT the big difference that guides our serv and style, is all THE FIRST racket swing. The first racket swing is the hardest in a serve, and is performed very differently by even the pro. The first racket swing generete the total serv and body mechanics, legs drive and the loop just before drop. Therefore a video about the first racket swing could do the hole serv into sence, forward revers fusion. Thanks for Nice video's!

Thanks Simon. Great video but I still don’t understand how you can hit a slice serve while pronating... it doesn’t seem physically possible, but I’m sure I have misunderstood!
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial4 жыл бұрын
For the slice serve you simply pronate less prior to contact, so the racket stays on edge slightly, then after contact the full pronation occurs 👍
@krakou27 жыл бұрын
I'm unsure on that subject. You may be right but imo some players "cut" their arm swing path to accelerate from the forearm's inertia, hence the palm/racket strings facing the ground after contact. Both ways - extreme supination/pronation and braking technique - are correct imo.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial7 жыл бұрын
That does occur when you want to really flatten out the serve but the players that do that are generally highly skilled and can control the wrist joint fully, without snapping the wrist. Most club players who have this issue will snap the wrist around that time, causing very serious wrist/elbow/shoulder injuries so I think you'd agree we shouldn't be encouraging that at all in terms of wrist snapping

@BestRomanianFolk17 жыл бұрын

@Eric-xw7tt3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps the best way to explain powerful tennis is that true power in tennis can only come from natural and relaxed movements. There is no way a human body can play 5 hours of brutally powerful tennis if every stroke requires brute force or unnatural exertion. How can Mahut or Isner serve aces after ten hours or more at Wimbledon? Because the proper service motion is completely natural and nearly tensionless to the human body. By extension, so is a forehand or backhand. One explanation of power is that power requires distance of travel. When linear distance is limited by our anatomy, we must find rotational distance. If we were to measure the entire linear distance of hand travel over a proper serve's many rotational motions, that distance will be multiple times the distance traveled by a smack down serve using a forehand grip employed by many beginners. The reason why a proper service technique generates a more powerful serve is because that entire long, rotational distance is created in the same time span as a smack-down faulty serve.

Thanks Simon, great video. I have a few question; so you turn your forearm rather then your wrist and also I was wondering how you get the timing off the racquet face to be open while pronating as I seem to miss hit a lot of serve due to the racquet face being at a funny angle when I make contact with the ball? Thanks in advance.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial7 жыл бұрын
Hi, well the forearm and wrist are connected so when the forearm turns so does the wrist, however the wrist is not snapping or flexing, it stays in a pretty neutral position (not flexed or extended). To get the timing it's best to break down the serve into smaller progressions, that is what we teach in our serve course. Check out the free videos here - www.top-tennis-training.com/serve-course/

Do you think there are any advantages to supinating your forearm (where strings face forward toward net as opposed to side fence) at the trophy position prior to the racquet drop? Can this add any more pop to pronation when you strike the ball? My 13 yr old son has a pretty good serve and he tends to have a bit of supination as he passes through the trophy position. Also wondering if there is any injury risk with this pre supination. Thanks. Love your stuff.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial6 жыл бұрын
Yes I think there are advantages, I try to use that method as I always feel it gives me more spin and control compared to when I use the "Federer" pose, like you said it will give you more pop through the contact zone as you have a bigger range of motion. I have had some pain in my forearm when testing it out so adjusted how much I do supinate in that power pose. Thanks for watching All the best Simon

@TopTennisTrainingOfficial7 жыл бұрын
I would check the grip firstly, is it a proper continental grip as those issues tend to happen when you have an eastern forehand grip. I would also break down just the supination and pronation as we teach in our serve course. You can watch the free videos here - www.top-tennis-training.com/serve-course/

Unfortunately, I'm too young/started following tennis too late to remember seeing either of them play :( so my tennis idols are Murray and Federer. Almost feel as those two are the modern equivalents of Samp/Aga
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial7 жыл бұрын
I'd say Federer/Nadal were more like Sampras/Agassi of the current generation even though Djokovic's game is so much more like Agassi's. But the impact Fed/Nadal had on tennis was similar (in fact was much greater) to Sampras and Agassi
@shimassi99617 жыл бұрын
That's a very good point actually XD think my bias towards Murray might be skewing my opinion... Any idea why Djokovic doesn't seem to be making the same impact on the sport as Fed/Nadal? I want to say it's because he seems to be lacking a certain 'class' that the other two have but it's got to be more than that.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial7 жыл бұрын
I think it comes down to three things: 1. Federer/Nadal were dominating the game prior to Djokovic's rise so they gained most of the tennis fans of this generation. Between 2011-2015 when Djokovic was dominating, Federer and Nadal were still playing so they had the fans support. Had they retired by then, Djokovic and Murray would probably have many more fans. 2. Early in his career Djokovic got under many fans skin with some of his antics, he has matured of course but those same fans remember him as that guy. 3. Djokovic dominated tennis for 4-5 years and beat the two most supported players in the history of tennis, Federer and Nadal, on a regular basis during that time. This domination made many Fedal fans to despise Novak's run

Thanks for the info. I recently got a new racquet and increased the grip size from 1/4 to 3/8 (Ruler method showed 3/8 would be ideal) with a over grip. For some reason, I am not able to pronate at all with the new racquet while with the old one i was able to achieve full pronation. I removed the overgrip and achieved certain level of pronation. Having issues only with my serve with the new racquet. Also, weirdly i am able to pronate more with eastern grip than continental grip. Could grip size play such a big role in pronation?

How to avoid pressure on solder
@pietjepuk58126 жыл бұрын
I think it's bs. I mean after you pronate half way and hit the ball, the ball doesn't touch the strings anymore. So full pronation will not add more pace to the ball than half pronation imo. I do think that a firmer wristsnap might add some extra pace to the ball though.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial6 жыл бұрын
A wrist snap is a great way to get more injuries. The reason we use full pronation is to allow the body to swing through the contact point in the most natural and sound way. Would you snap your wrist when you throw a ball?
@pietjepuk58126 жыл бұрын
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Ok maybe a wristsnap is also not a good thing and doesn't add pace to the ball. But i don't think wrist pronation does either since the ball left the strings already after half pronating your arm (in order to be able to hit the ball with your strings instead of your frame). It might give some relief to your arm in the followthrough since it stresses the elbow less, but i definitely don't believe it's "the key to power and control" like you guys call it.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial6 жыл бұрын
@@pietjepuk5812 There is a reason players use it. When we say it's the key to power and control, we mean pronation that occurs prior to contact. The full pronation will help players avoid injury, a vital element that any good coach should make a priority when teaching. No good having a great serve if you're always injured.
