One thing I told my wife about yesterday with regard to approach shots, don't try to hit a winner on a short ball. Use the approach shot to position for a winner once you work your way in. I think you get a higher percentage put away shot, and you are still in pretty good position when they try a passing shot. Great video!!

A fine real world video. Seeing Alex's smooth move in the first minute is worth the price of admission. At minute 6 I think you mean 'if your opponent is taken wide, AND his head is down, race to the net. Most of us rec players can cheat by coming inside the baseline, our opponent doesn't detect it since they are more worried about their shot, not the chess match going on.

Great, comprehensive lesson. Thanks. I especially liked the approach into space. Great tip. Questions: Should my approach shots mostly be down the line? When is a cross court approach ok? After each type of approach shot, where should I position myself to pressure my opponent and minimize pass angles and lobs?

Great tips! I wonder why nowadays we don't see any net play very often anymore, especially in the women's game? I personally find it very effective - the funny thing is that by the end of the match, they only remembered the volleys that I won, but I only remember the ones that I loss :) so it seems that even if I miss the volley or get lobbed, it creates a lot of pressure to my opponents.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial

For sure, it shows your opponent that they can't get away with giving you balls with not enough quality because you will approach and put them under pressure. Forces them to overplay!

@patrickweston3293
@patrickweston3293 4 жыл бұрын
More and more. Most recreational players at my level have good groundstrokes, and seem to regard tennis as a contest to see who's got the bigger forehand. These guys only approach the net to shake hands! I go to the net (even though my volley is only so-so) simply to assert that I am not their human ball machine, and to wreck their timing.
@PL-fh8cz

@@ssenssel Most players at the club level don't come forward to put away a volley. I always remind myself that even Fed only wins about 50-60% of his volley points, so if I get close to that level I'm happy.
@Pistefka
@Pistefka 4 жыл бұрын
I've started coming in to the net much more recently, because during the covid lockdown I got loads of volley practise playing mini tennis in the garden with my son, which was 80% volleys (small garden). However, I probably do it too often as I keep getting lobbed. Is it wise to slightly delay coming in, to kind of disguise it?
@patrickweston3293
@patrickweston3293 4 жыл бұрын
@@Pistefka I hit volleys on the driveway with my kiddo too. It's a great equalizer. The small ones have the quick hands! As for opponents who lob, I try to be prepared to take a couple of steps back and smack an overhead at their shoes. Let's see them land deep lobs inside the line all match long. If they can, congrats to them!

You have to focus on the process, what are you trying to achieve and how are you trying to play less about the outcome, this will take the pressure off and hopefully help you play great tennis!

I've an awkward question. I clearly know that the more you're unskilled, the less you benefit from a proper racquet for yourself. The more you progress, the more you can obtain from a proper racquet and setup. But what do you think of pro stocks and pro room racquets? That's a 6.1 pro stock? What do you guys think about these types of racquets for a 5.5/6 player?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
I think it all depends on the player. Certain rackets would benefit a certain gamestyle much more than others. A player who wants more feel and control could benefit from a customised racket that has been modified for additional control etc
