I'm a bit confused. I have worked hard on pronation with both the flat and slice serve...but here you talk about "carving" at the last second and show your palm facing up instead of facing down as with pronation. To get good slice should I be carving to produce spin or pronating and hitting the outside of the ball? Thanks

Perfect lesson Jeff. Been working on my slice and whenever I attempt that really short wide slice I catch net most of the time and it's not reliable in match play. I prefer the "power slice", I can serve and volley or serve +1

I think I have a power slice serve with pronation. Off pace slice serve is without pronation and less topspin I believe. I used to hit slice like that.... I think it's good idea to mix those serves because it might be tricky to read.

Always had a pretty good slice serve (from a lefty). That was my main serve that I aced people with. Then I stopped playing consistently for about a year. Came back and fell in love with the sport (this was about a month ago). For me I was struggling with making my slice serve over the net. Then, my coach told me to use my legs more on all my serves and, now, I’m acing people again with my slice serve!

Exactly the video I was looking for. This could be incorporated as a first serve to increase the consistency at points like 15 -40 or whenever you feel the pressure in your service game. Thanks again Jeff.
@jeffreylook98495 жыл бұрын
What if your power slice serve is that mushy slow short slice that hits the net often? If I try to alter the slice path it turns into a too long less slow flat serve with slight slice. It's my first year learning slice and kick.

Do you not pronate during impact?
@Better_Call_Raul6 жыл бұрын
Excellent video. Good news: I hit a good wide hard slice serve ace about once a match. Bad news: Embarrassed to say that it is not intentionaI; Sometimes I aim body and it goes wide, aim wide and it goes T, try to hit slice and it goes flat, etc. But I do notice most of my fellow 3.5 opponents NEVER hit the good wide slice serve. Does this mean I already have the basic ability to hit slice? With coaching, it can be developed to where I can intentionally hit the slice and be more consistent with it?

Raul TW thank you! You can definitely improve the slice :)

Hello, Jeff. You chose an historic (for my memory) tennis theme (T.T.). In 1984 i played in Canea-Crete-Hellas and made a lot of aces in the middle of side service line on deuce court. It's so simple as a Theory, but very difficult in Praxis, because of a large margin of error... I'm continuing the Practice till now, but we must not forget that Psychology is Above All and 80% in Tennis Success (10% Technique and the rest Physical condition) according to my oppinion... So maybe your next theme would be some kind of Phychological Support...

I think tennis would advance if they renamed serves more like baseball pitches. Even guys like McEnroe call the slice serve a slider. When I watch Fed serve t serves they are not truly flat he usually cuts the ball a little usually to the t on duece side. Probably on ad side as well. I want McEnroe to call the serve as it is a cutter. Like a cut fastball. Jimmy Conners was asked why he never developed a really fast first serve and he told the interviewer I always thought of myself as a knuckle ball pitcher when serving keeping the guy off balance. Being I love both sports I always love the interchangeable language. Who cares if Euros don't get baseball. Lol.

Always amazed how Martin could generate so much power from such an abbreviated serve motion. From what I understand, he started serving that way due to a shoulder injury, but the power, the pop he could put on the ball... wow! Makes me think that a lot of the service motion we see today is totally superfluous.

Any tips on what to do when you lose your serve? I'm having all kinds of issues at the moment with my slice serve and it's usually my strength. Right now shoulder is opening up and elbow path is out of wack. Been fiddling with the grip. Pretty much I'm all up on my head cause it's lacking the break it once had.

Relax Jeffe'! You know who has an amazing power slice serve? The greatest tennis player of all time who just won his 50th set in a row on clay. You may have heard of him, he's a sweet little player named RAFAEL PARERA NADAL...

Robert Mitchell John McEnroe in his day had the best slice serve ever. And he could back it up w amazing volleys. He literally put players in the stands w it. And guess what even at almost sixty he troubles guys on the power share tour w it.

Love your videos Jeff. Being right handed, I do a 'power' slice by hitting through, not carving (at least don't think I'm carving), the ball around 1 o'clock - 2 o'clock like a flat serve with a slightly closed racquet face (thumb/index finger V on #2 bevel). Toss is around 1 o'clock. Don't have to hit it too hard vs. avg. rec players and could place it anywhere in the box, though usually in the area in your video. If they move toward the alley, then try to serve more toward the middle of the box and slice into the body. Any tips on slicing over the higher part of the net and dropping the ball onto the sideline between the net and center of the service box (basically the quadrant/area from your four balls toward the net where your serve landed at 5:10)? I try to carve around the ball with a slightly open face (#8 position in V) and loose grip where the racquet barely brushes the ball around 2 o'clock - 3 o'clock and is 'thrown' through the swing path with a wrist snap for a slower change of pace when trying to hit that area and making the ball just go wide without much depth, though success is limited (hit the tape a lot) unless go farther away from center of court and toward middle of service box and telegraphing the serve vs better players.

Hey, thanks for your comment. You're right, the leg explosion is challenging to develop, but you can still hit great slice serves without leg power.

Love u Jeffy, but Todd Martin was 6 FOOT 6!!!.. the "reason" U and the rest of us can't hit that serve, is that were not.. 6 FOOT 6 with LONG MONKEY ARMS! haha! If I could serve OFF A CHAIR, yes, that is why taller servers have crazy wide serves, as the taller U are, higher U can it, the more angles 'magically" open up to you! haha (still love the rest of your stuff, but If u didn't know, now u do. haha)
