'Runner' is the first song we wrote for our new record. It began as a guitar riff Patrick recorded while we were living off-grid, anchored in a fisherman's cove called San Juanico. The only instruments we had on board were an acoustic guitar and a drum sequencer, but the limitations seemed to work in our favor. Until that point, we had no clear vision for our writing.
The demo we recorded that day outlined the sound of our future, the first contours of our fifth full-lengthed album, called 'Swimmer,'

Lyrics:
Runner, I know you’re living with a wild hunger Let me make the most of us
You know you’ll never be a runner
And leave me in a cloud of dust
Living in the same old sin
I feel it blowing in the wind
Like manna in the desert, oh
Gonna take a miracle
Every little bead of sweat
Feel it running down my neck
When you look at me like that
Feeling like we can’t go back
If I become a pillar of salt
I’ll know that it was all my fault
Every little bead of sweat
Every little bead of sweat
Runner, you’re just a bottomless pit of hunger
Lead me to the promised land
Your manna is only a famine
Wandering the desert oh
Gonna take a miracle
Every little bead of sweat
Feel it running down my neck
When you look at me like that
Feeling like we can’t go back
If I become a pillar of salt
I’ll know that it was all my fault
Every little bead of sweat
Every little bead of sweat
Let me make the most of us
You know you’ll never be a runner
And leave me in a cloud of dust
Leveled in a burning heat
Red Sea devouring me
Flowing over my stoned-soul
Gonna take a miracle
Every little bead of sweat
Feel it running down my neck
When you look at me like that
Feeling like we can’t go back
If I become a pillar of salt
I’ll know that it was all my fault
Every little bead of sweat
Every little bead of sweat

The song references 4 songs by the extraordinary Laura Nyro: He's a Runner (1966), Stoned Soul Picnic (1968), Beads of Sweat (1970) and Nyro's mindblowing cover of Gonna Take a Miracle (1971). The vocal influenced by Nyro's Captain for Dark Mornings (1969). Nyro "probably influenced more successful songwriters than anyone" (Elton John). The Tennis song Mean Streets is a tribute to Nyro.

I never would have thought that an alt pop song singing about Lot's wife, would get nearly 3 million views. I've loved these guys, all the way back to small sound keep up the incredible work. Origins is still maybe my favourite song still, the lyrical content is just so F-ing incredible and makes be evaluate my life and circumstances every time I hear it. I really ask myself if I am unknowingly surrendering my personal power to others and whether its from a place of love or trespass.

🏃 LYRICS 🏃‍♀️ Runner, I know you're living with a wild hunger Let me make the most of us You know you’ll never be a runner And leave me in a cloud of dust Living in the same old sin I feel it blowing in the wind Like manna in the desert, oh Gonna take a miracle Every little bead of sweat Feel it running down my neck When you look at me like that Feeling like we can't go back If I become a pillar of salt I'll know that it was all my fault Every little bead of sweat Every little bead of sweat Runner, you’re just a bottomless pit of hunger Lead me to the promised land Your manna is only a famine Wandering the desert, oh Gonna take a miracle Every little bead of sweat Feel it running down my neck When you look at me like that Feeling like we can't go back If I become a pillar of salt I'll know that it was all my fault Every little bead of sweat Every little bead of sweat Let me make the most of us You know you'll never be a runner And leave me in a cloud of dust Leveled in a burning heat Red Sea devouring me Flowing over my stoned-soul Gonna take a miracle… Every little bead of sweat Feel it running down my neck When you look at me like that Feeling like we can't go back If I become a pillar of salt I'll know that it was all my fault Every little bead of sweat Every little bead of sweat

i discovered this song in february 2020. the last month before the pandemic took its toll. i would always listen to it while on a ride to work. that winter was a pleasantly cold one, and i felt peace and joy of living and enjoying simple, pleasurable things. several months later, i got COVID and, to this day, more than two years later, am still struggling with health problems the infection triggered. i love this song and gladly listen to it, truthfully, while reminiscing, because it marks probably the last time i felt happy, at ease and complete. for me, it all went downhill from there.
