Personally I find shaped poly to be uncontrollable especially when hitting flat. I find that shaped strings have a lot of easier power and for sure easier spin but to play with it I also have brush the ball excessively to control it. With rounder shapes it's more predictable and easier to flatten the ball without hitting the back fence.

I've been stringing my Wilson Blade 16x19 v7 with16g NXT multifiber mains at 55lbs and 18g Luxilon Ace poly at 45lbs. I don't see much endorsement of this wide range in tension between M and C strings, and maybe only because you'd have to be an eager self stringer experimenter like me to ever try it. Would be curious to know if you, Mr. Tennisnerd, have experimented with this much tension difference in M and C strings and if you have, what you think about it. For me, it works incredibly well, much better than any other setup I've ever tried. And I've experimented a lot! Thanks for providing such interesting content.

@@Tennisnerd I haven't noticed any ill effects on the rackets. Before I switched to the new (ish) Blade v7 I played with Prince Textreme Pros for three years and started stringing them with the 10lb difference a year into that time. I got the idea from two things: 1. Poly plays better with lower tension, much lower than is recommended for a string like NXT, for example, so why would you not want to string each, in a hybrid, according to what their best performances dictate? And 2. The Sirgetti (sp?) stringing idea that I think you have investigated. That system changes the tension on every string and you end up with widely disparate tensions throughout the stringbed. While checking out the tennis world's responses to that idea I never saw any mention of racket warping, either as a potential result, or one that had happened to someone. Gave me a bit of comfort that today's rackets might be up to the task of supporting my idea of a 20% difference in Mains and Crosses. So far, that seems to be the case. Rackets are all holding up very well, as far as I can tell, and I've strung all of my rackets that way, like I said, for years now. Each gets a new string job about once every 4-5 weeks. I play year round, 3-5 times per week. It has made a big difference in my game. So much so, that I'm pretty much done with experimenting with other setups ;-) Cheers!

I like hybrids. HEAD Velocity MLT or Prince Premier Touch in the mains at 25 kg and a round poly like RS Lyon or Alu Power in the crosses at 24 kg.

Nice vid man. I am breaking your rules by stringing kev/ 4g at 86lbs. Arm is fine. Lower tensions or soft strings and the ball sails. Ironically buds with gut/poly or full poly at normal tensions have arm issues.

i use the same setup for my strings.. i have multifilamemt on mains (sensation 16 or head velocity mlt) and poly on cross (luxilon alu power).. i used to have a very bad tennis elbow but after changing to this setup my tennis elbow got a lot better.

Hi thank you for your generous effort, great video as well, my question is about the hybrid setups, do poly and multi age the same way? from experience. a racquet fitted with hybrid may cause tennis elbow if the strings are kept for a long period of time, which means that hybrid is great for pro players who change their strings weekly if not daily and not too good for amateurs and club players, what do you think? I would love to read your opinion on that. many thanks.

Thanks. My opinion is that if you are planning to keep your strings in the racquet for several months, always go for natural gut or multifilament. I know many keep the poly in there for half a year, but it goes dead and you lose the playability of the string. Playing with a dead poly can also create arm problems. So for players who don't restring once a month even, I think a full bed of gut or multi is the way to go.

After a couple of weeks her elbow began to hurt. She never had this problem before, when playing with a less stiffer racket. She is a level 6 player. Good strokes. And making progress. Hi Remco, I might decide to leave the Pure Drive altogether. But first, try Solinco Tour Bite Soft strung at the same tension. Otherwise, I would go for a HEAD Gravity MP or Wilson Clash. No need to risk injuries at that age! Good luck / J

Co-poly and poly are two types of polys. Co-polys are a "poly blend" that create a softer feel than a poly, which is a bit firmer. Most strings today are co-polys.

I've been playing with a HEAD Graphene 360+ Gravity Pro strung with HEAD Lynx 1.3mm at 45lbs and it feels really plush, comfortable and still controlled. Definitely recommend for any player going as low in tension as you possibly can. As a junior I used a Pure Drive with Tourna Big Hitter 1.25 at 57lbs. Gave tennis a break and when I tried to come back my elbow completely fell apart, then I realized that heavier more flexible rackets strung low is the way to go!

Could listen to this guy all day, no wonder Sweden produced so many good players like Borg. Ever thought of doing a review of a wooden racquet as a one off novelty, I've been reading some debates online between old guys claiming modern players wouldn't survive using a wooden racquet and younger ones saying an NTRP 5.5 would have beaten the top pros of the wooden racquet era (I think they mean if the 5.5 got to use a modern racquet.) I watched an early 80's grass court match between Mats Wilander and Kevin Curran, Curran had a wooden racquet and still serving pretty fast! How heavy were the Wooden racquets, 400g? You could easily swing it!

I'm a little unsure of the definitive difference between "feel" and "control", and why they are on opposite sides of the spectrum when choosing strings and tension. I suppose I get that stiffness is more controllable and flexibility allows you to feel the contact with more sensitivity. However, there's a blurry understanding of the concept, because it seems like more feel should allow you to control better too. If you could simplify this more than I am, please help me with the basic comprehension.

Can you use a thinner gauge string in a 18x20 vs a 16x19? I'm thinking that the more strings in a 18x20 will spread the load, so durability would be similar to a thicker gauge in a 16x19.

Thanks for the video. My setup is usually Sensation (C) and Poly (M)...I experiment with different polys on main but keep the same at cross. Do you know how the Dunlop Silk string is? (comparison to any others?) ... Your notes showed your M/C tension difference is around 4lbs...is there a chance to damage your racquet with a difference going over 4 lbs?

I have seen tension difference of 4lbs changing the shape of the racquet head making it rounder. I usually keep mine at 2lbs to minimise this deformation from occurring. Damage really depends on your racquet frame type and storage conditions of how much stress it can take........also, on how hard you bounce your racquet when you miss a sitter! 😜

The issue with the Clash is that it breaks strings quite easily. I would go with a durable string but with a lower tension for more depth perhaps. Like Luxilon 4G 1.25 or Solinco Tour Bite 1.25 at 22 kg. If you go for a power string like Tecnifibre X-One Bi-phase 1.30 you will get max power, but durability will suffer.

What do you think, yonex poly tour pro is for you softer or stiffer string ? Iplayed Pure strike 98 PO7 with rpm blast, this combo destroyed my arm. Now i bought third gen PS and im using yptp 125. Its better, but i still feel pain in arm . Im stringing on 24/25kg.

Yonex Poly Tour Pro is definitely one of the softer poly strings out there in my opinion. The PS you're using is still quite a stiff frame, in combination with stringing it on 24/25 kg I can imagine it being a challenging setup for your arm. Maybe try stringing it on a lower tension, if that doesn't help maybe go for a hybrid with a multi in there. In combination with lower tension.

Yes, some pros hybrid polyesters. It is a new trend. Kind of. You need to experiment.

You will get most of the "feel" from the string you put on the mains. Shaped poly on the mains makes most sense if you are interested in spin. Shaped poly on the crosses doesn't make all that much sense as it will dig into the mains and cause it to lose tension/break faster.

I bought a Gamma Progression 200 stringer many years back and am still using it today. It cost me around $200. Best $200 I have ever spent. I don't think I will ever need to buy another stringing machine. I also went to Home Depot and bought a simple wire cutter and needle nose plier. That has been a worthwhile upgrade over the stock plier/cutter tool. As an added bonus, the stringer also came with a whole bunch of various free strings. If you live in the US, here is what I would suggest: 1) Get a Gamma Progression 200 machine from Tennis Warehouse (or anywhere else). 2) Get a wire/string cutter, a pair of needle nose pliers, a straight awl, and a cheap 660-foot reel of nylon / synthetic gut string. I think you will have to pay shipping cost for the stringing machine, but for the rest of these items, you should be able to strategize and get free shipping. For example, you could go to Tennis Warehouse and get bent needle nose pliers, a straight awl, a Xuron all-purpose flush cutter, and a 660-foot reel of Forten Nylon 16, all for a very reasonable total price. I would go for a neutral string color like natural, but if there is another color that you really like, by all means have all the fun you want to have. Also I have heard that Midwest Sports doesn't have state sales tax. Not really sure about that since I have never bought from them, but you can shop around and see how you can get the best possible overall price. You can also explore Amazon and see, especially if you have Amazon Prime. 3) Watch Andy Gerst's video explaining how to string. 4) Read Gamma's instruction manual that they send with the stringer. It is a worthwhile time investment. 5) For your first few string jobs, string only your most expendable racquets, and string them only with cheap string. Do this until you get the hang of it and are fully confident. Don't try to string fast. That is never worth it. Take a craftsperson-like approach and aim for a quality string job. At this point, if you only use nylon / synthetic gut, you are all set. There is nothing wrong or lowly about using synthetic gut, and in fact, Jim Courier won grand slams using synthetic gut. But if you want to use polyester / hybrid stringing, just keep in mind that there will be some differences when installing poly strings vs synthetic gut strings. The main areas of differences are how to tighten up knots, how rough or smooth the crosses feel on you fingers as you weave the crosses, how long it takes for the string to fully tension up before you clamp it, and how easy or hard it is to navigate strings through tight spaces. This third one is one use case for the straight awl that I mentioned earlier. Still, these differences are nothing crazy or complicated. You can totally figure it out. There is one subtlety to revisit when you are actually doing the stringing. When you weave a cross string and then pull it through, you will need to keep the string moving like a sine wave so that it doesn't notch up the mains. One way to do this is by using the other hand. However, I would not recommend this. It can result in friction burns and is simply not worth it. Instead, you can use the blue-handled-black-pronged tool-thingy that comes with the stringer. I don't know the technical term for that tool. Sorry. :) Now, if you decide to use poly / hybrid, one option would be to use the sample strings that Gamma provides with the stringer. But if you want to be really enterprising and cost-effective, you can sell those sample strings (maybe on Ebay or Facebook marketplace). And then you can buy yourself an economic reel of poly string. For around $40, you can get a 660-foot reel by IsoSpeed or Gosen. At this point you would be equipped to install a good, cost-effective stringbed of full-bed synthetic gut, full-bed poly, or a hybrid. If and when you run out of Forten Nylon, you can buy a new reel in same/different color/gauge. Or you can upgrade to Forten Sweet. That is an amazing synthetic gut at a really good price. Enjoy!

Hey @tennisnerd first of all thank you so much for your great content . But I cannot understand why someone could like the head velocity mlt. I tryed it out because of this video. I have to say. I really hate it. it's kind of dead. No Feel, nothing. I prefer the head rip control. here you really can feel the ball and the power. And i think it does not lack control. But not Lee i play with Luxilon Alu Power or Element soft. I also like RIP Control in the Mains and Alu Power in the crosses.
