This is the most aggressive version of Federer ever on any surface. His backhand was on fire even though he was 35 years old. Federer backhand played like Wawrinka backhand.

I still come back to this video from time to time. 2017 Federer during AO, Sunshine double and Wimbledon was arguably his highest level. He finally learned how not to allow Nadal to harass his backhand and the tables turned - 5 consecutive wins. Best backhand ever.

2017 and early 2018 was his gift to us. We had been hearing since 2011 that he was too old, behind the times, wrong racquet, weak era, etc. 2017 into 2018, after a knee surgery at 35yrs old, no less, he produced some of his best tennis.

Look at the way he moves on the tennis court. The way he dropped volleys, dropshots, backhand , slices. Everything about him is beautiful and graceful. Roger Federer is a beautiful player. It doesn't mean that Nadal and Novak aren't good. But Federer is something else.

The level in IW was the best he has played since 2006. It looked like nobody could hang with him. In Miami he was less dominant and those conditions are probably less favourable to him than in the desert but the mental toughness and physical skill was still properly on point. What a great year for him!

Roger's feel for the game, brilliance and display of raw emotion touches you on a completely different level when compared to Djokovic, Nadal or any of the top players. People often try to rationalise the GOAT - the truth is there is nothing rational about the love for Federer!

Australian Open and Sunshine Double at 35-what a player! Even after seven years, we still haven’t seen anyone else with this unique blend of power and skill. Unfortunately, the game has shifted towards baseline players who can endure every rally. That’s why we don’t see the easy wins Federer often achieved with his versatile skill set. It’s hard to fully grasp this if you don’t play or truly understand the game.

Yes, mental strength/confidence is a fickle thing and I'm not sure it decided the outcome in those matches. It might have made the losses possible, but if a player gets to match points, all explanations for them being bound to lose are mistaken, because a bound-to-lose player never gets that close to winning. Wimbledon 2019 was a few inches from being Federer's. That first serve at 40-15 hit the tape and would very likely have been an ace.

Got to see him live at Indian Wells Championship 2017. He looked much thinner in person. What astounded me the most was the sixth sense anticipation of both players. At least got a checkoff on the bucket list. Greatest All Time. Switch to a lager racket earlier in career and he finishes with 26 to 27 slam titles.
