He was really missing the fast courts in slams from 2008-2016. He had fast courts at Dubai, Cincy, Shanghai etc and he could beat Djoker in them even when Djoker was at his peak. But the slams themselves always played slower

If Federer had Djokovic’s defence and mental strength he would have been unbeatable. Just imagine if you had the best offence and defence. I guess Alcaraz is the closest we’ve seen to that combo so far, but he’s not as good as Fed was at attacking, but still, just goes to show how complete it makes you when you have a great offence and defence.

People forget when Roger started, it was the serve and volley era and then he had to adapt his game to the baseline era and still won slams.. and they slowed the courts down to his detriment

Just look at Carlos, Nadal is still active and we have a mini-nadal already hehehe Tennis is heading differently than Federer drink in his early days, thus we just can hope for more net/attacker player embedded in this new version of the game: more slow, baseline rallies and few variations besides forehand backhand. You all know wimbledon's grass becomes more like clay when it comes to final, that's the reason he loses to djoker. when it comes to fast courts (AO17), Roger wins everyone. When it comes to medium pace, Djoker is the king. When it comes to clay, Rafa beats everyone. We should be grateful to witness these all 3 goats in our lifetime.

Ridicilous stuff, and he did this right after a draining Olympics campaign and suffered a heartbreaking whitewash defeat in the final to settle with the Silver medal. An insane response! Then he would repeat this feat again at the same tournament in 2015, 3 years later - again from another heartbreaking loss at Wimbledon in the final. Just unreal. How can you not drop serve and not drop a set for a whole tournament... not once, but twice?? And achieving both after heartbreaking losses in the previous outing?

The problem is that after 2013, which was a disaster in terms of injuries, his speed and footwork had to be adjusted. He played the most aggressive tennis of his life under Edberg, taking so much risks trying to shorten the rallies, coming up with the SABR and coming to the net more often. This is true since 2013. Before 2013 Nadal wasn’t just dependent on clay, he beat Federer at the AO in 2012 before losing to Djokovic in the greatest match of all time, and beat Djokovic in the 2013 US Open Final, but since 2013 Nadal became inferior to both Djokovic and Federer on hardcourts.

Even so, Djokovic still needs to rely on the decisive moment to beat Federer. If their ages were reversed, 30yo Djokovic against prime Federer, Djokovic would not even last until the decisive moment.

The only time Roger beat him in a slam during that 8 year period was at Wimbledon 2012 in the semifinals. All the remaining matches at slams were won by Novak. He's just more clutch and more mentally tough and that's the difference between Novak and Roger. Roger's tennis is equal to and maybe even better than Novak's tennis, but mentally when it truly matters the most he wins every time.

Therefore, when Federer has not completely declined, Djokovic cannot have an advantage. When Federer has completely declined, Djokovic has an advantage. It is that simple. Of course 36 is old in tennis. 36 year old Djokovic would be destroyed by 5-6 years younger big 3. 29/30 is no pensioner, it's just a bit past-prime to contend with a prime all-time great. 95 out of 100 of the oldest slam winners were all younger than 36. Only 5 times has someone older than 36 won a slam in the open era and only 3 people have ever done it. That tells you how old 36 is.

Djokovic is the goat but peak Federer on fast hardcourts was the highest level. Djokovic highest level overall across all surfaces, but peak Federer on fast hardcourts was great to watch.
