Greetings my #GothMoths
Okay seriously, this is going to be a ride Gothies!
+++
My name is Nat and I am a gothic operatic singer, actor and voice artist based in the heart of Kent, England. Music has always played an important part in my life as a musician and I love to use my platform on KZbin to share it in my music reactions.
I work on the basis of a reaction should be just that, you don't get another crack at it! What you see from me is the real deal. I don't pre-screen anything I see or work from tight scripts. I'm completely open, emotive and sensitive with my audience.

Having a depression on and off last couple of years and years and years... This song made me feel, ... I don't know. Invincible again? I played this in my car last week, saw the sun behind a big cloud so you could see it's rays and I sang OUT LOUD with the windows open. It. Felt. Great.

Nope.... not from Disney, nah. Not at all. It's been said it's Disneyesque, but it is an original piece from his most recent album. I've listened now to almost all his stuff, and own as much, purely as a result of doing as you do - a reaction channel. Had I not started I'd never have heard of Devin - now has become the most important musical touch point in my life. If not as a reaction, please listen to The Death Of Music live at the Royal Albert Hall - it will leave you in pieces. Keep it going fella!

A wild Jim has appeared. Doing music reactions before it was cool. But you know it's best experienced as a three piece with Funeral and Bastard too! Love ya Jim.

The most ridiculous part is that he's been doing this for almost 30 years with little or no vocal training. This is a guy who said "I’ve never been a fan of singing, I prefer playing guitar, but when I was younger every singer I worked with was a douchebag so I thought I’d just handle it.” And this: "Singing is also a nightmare for me... I never wanted to be a singer and still don't particularly want to be a singer. It's one of those things where, after a while, when you realize you've got a vision and have a passion to say something that is emotionally very significant to you, it has to be right. It has to be a certain thing. Over the years, I've developed the capacity to make my voice do what I want it to do in ways that I can't explain to other singers or get other people to do. I try to involve different women to help me with the parts, because it's something I can't physically do, the female side of the vocal spectrum. But, man, it's like pulling teeth, the singing thing."

If this is true, it's pretty funny, considering his very first appearance on any sort of record was as a vocalist. His voice was the only reason Steve Vai picked him up and jumpstarted his career

It's truly amazing to see another human being that is a more gifted than 99.9% of ALL humanity (Living, of course lol) and him seemingly struggle (like us normies) with what to do with. Fasciniating man. Gorgeous music. My goodness.

Hey Nat! Glad you enjoyed this :) It's not a from a Disney film, it's just his take on a disney-ish musical piece. So it's a Devin original, just quite a different style of music than he usually does :)

As people have already said not from Disney but just known as his Disney song. He has fun with it live, usually changes in to a tutu and very often with a stage covered in soft toys. Watch the live from Houston one, its fancam but the sounds ok.

It is not from Disney - more of a Disney-esque style or pastiche thereof. He has said that he has a wide range of musical and stylistic influences. Regarding the Michael Crawford take, Phantom of the Opera is one of Devin's favorites and he has a song that directly references the show - "Christeen," from the album "Infinity." kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJTJdaunbb-qa6M

While Devin was not a fan of musicals he has as said in past interviews his harmonies were influenced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Trevor Jones (in fact "Skeksis" a song written by his previous band Strapping Young Lad features a passage from the Dark Crystal Overture.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHXci6ynhdWhodE

Tuesday greetings, Nat. Have you seen any other of Devy's quarantine stuff? I haven't seen a lot because of my current obsession, but what I have watched has been great (he's really 'growing' on me). :) Gonna request Avatar again (and Heilung & Civil Wars, lol)... Johannes (singer), in more than 1 interview I've watched lately has mentioned Devy as someone he/they really like & look up to. In 1 interview, he was talking about how Devin opened for them not so long ago & said how excited he was about that & didn't know _how_ it came to be... then said it hit him that that meant they had to go _after_ him (and the ensuing panic, lol)! :)

Devin Townsend has never had a singing lesson in his life. Back when he was 19 and singing for Steve Vai they sent him to a voice coach who told him that if he kept singing the way he did he would lose his voice within a year. That was 28 years ago, and his voice is now stronger than ever.

Nat, Don't take this the wrong way please but just a little advice from a friend & supporter, I find it hard to follow a reaction that is stopped way too early & far too often. (I don't feel that 6 seconds & 1 word into the song warrants a pause & comment, the video just feels so disjointed when that's done.) (I'm still a Goth Moth, just bleating on a bit though, sorry.) Btw, You have a cute laugh!

Here's what will make you sick. Back in the early '90s Devin was singing for Steve Vai, and they sent him along to a vocal doctor about his voice. The Doctor told Devin that if he continued to sing the way he did he would permanently damage his voice within two years. 25 years later his voice is stronger than ever.
