People who don't know Devin from before might be surprised to find the voice of an angel in the body of a bald 50 year old canadian rock / metal musician. I struggle to think of other artists with a voice that has a range like this. Devin and Floor guested on each others records, when Devin got Floor to contribute a soprano vocal to Pandemic (back in 2011) and Floor brought him in a couple of years later on a ReVamp song, what became Anatomy of Nervous Breakdown: Neurasthenia. The latter is an actual duet, albeit studio-borne, recorded separately, but still very nice... Pandemic is a deep cut album track, less accessible Devin's extreme metal side, but still a curiousity.

Personally, besides Deadhead and Why, I love his performance of Deep Peace, Higher, and Stormbending from the Live at Plovdiv concert. His versatility is incredible. He did a project called The Casualties of Cool which is mellow, bluesy, and just wonderful. He also started a band called Strapping Young Lad which is ferocious, extremely angry, and also just wonderful. It is hard to go wrong with Devin!

"Deadhead" is more representative of Devin's work as a whole (so far as that's possible), but I think "Why" would be best for a vocal coach reaction video. Both are great songs, and will doubtless bring views (iirc they're the two most popular Devy songs, in terms of the alogithm), but "Deadhead" focuses more on the instrumentation, while "Why" makes the vocals central. Also, re: the banter comments at the beginning: that's one of Devin's best talents! He's an incredible "banter artist" (?), and the humorous, entertaining way he interacts with fans, and his music, has been a hallmark of his style for decades. Look up any live clip, or his videos for the song "Animals" (unofficial and official videos - the former done by Devin, the latter crowdsourced from his KZbin fans) for some more examples!

Devin and Floor just have that raw talent that you just don't find very often. In their fields, they're the top of the top, crème de la crème, and you just can't argue with that. I'm not saying they're "the best ever", but clearly, they're one of a kind in what they do. I'm not necessarely a huge fan of both, i rarely listen to their stuff outside of reactions (even tho i used to listen a lot of Nightwish around 15 years ago)...but man you just gotta acknowledge what immense talent they've got. And i'm not a fan either of the concept of "talent" as i strongly believe that the effort, research, practice and work put throught your art or craft weights way, waaaay much more than just Talent...but when you see someone that clearly got the natural affinity to their craft, paired with the discipline, effort and will to better themselves, you just notice it right away. As we can see in Devin and Floor. They're just "that" good.

It’s odd seeing something like this. Maybe I’m being ignorant but when you’ve been following an artist since say 1990-91 there’s a tendency to take their abilities for granted. When you see a recently converted HevyDevy fan going on and on about how brilliant he is ( and make no mistake he is ) you tend to think YES! I KNOW! I’ve known for nigh on thirty years. But then I see something like this. A song I’ve never heard him perform before and I’m suddenly reminded why I ended up being a fan in the first place. So thanks for posting that footage. Thanks for reminding me why. 9:45 🙂👍🤟
