May God Bless You Lady. Your teaching methods are indeed unique and practical. I'm a Sri Lankan Burgher and a private English tutor. Never have I ever come across anyone who teaches grammar so clearly. I always had to struggle to remember everything you taught in this video. Now it's so clear, that I don't need to struggle anymore. Your other videos are equally great. I don't know if it's possible to order your grammar book from Sri Lanka due to certain bans in our country at present, but I'll most certainly try. You are certainly God's gift to English students worldwide. May God Bless You more and more.

Thank you so so much Ma'am for your extraordinary video lessons. It means a lot for me. The best part your lessons created interest in English grammar and inspires me to do more and more practice. Ma'am how to identify tense based on your explanation in statements like having helper verb+v3 but statements are not passive. I was worried. (past past - but it is not a past perfect) I was upset. (past past - but it is not a past perfect) I was tensed (past past - but it is not a past perfect) as I didn't find you at home. He is worried (past past - but it is not a past perfect) for you. Also in LWE - 6th : Wk 17 Day 5 I used to get unbearably nervous with my hands turning clammy and my throat getting dry. In answer key it is explained like used to (past-non finite) and get (non-finite base infinitive). In this statement isn't 'used to' a Modal verb?
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Keep practicing and it will be crystal clear. In the first sentence 'worried' is not past participle but adjective. I was happy, I was worried. Again 'upset' is adjective not past participle. Same with tensed. (which is wrong) I was tense is enough. Worried in the last is the same as the first. I have done a lesson on participles. Please view. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKmUmYyMp9WkqaM Used to is the past tense. It is non finite because it cannot be conjugated. 'get' is the base infinitive form use with this modal. Otherwise, people will wonder what is 'get' and get confused. It is a modal verb. So you are right. It is all these. Glad you are practicing with LWE. Are you using the answer keys from Kindle?
@skyyranker65682 жыл бұрын

We are hearing the bell or We hear the bell Which sentence is correct In my book they say hear is stative verb Therefore we used we hear the bell 🤔But we are hearing the bell that is temporary and progressive action. Because we can't hear always, why they use we hear the bell ?
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher3 жыл бұрын
Yes, hear is stative as part of the sense verbs. If you want progressive tense you could say we could hear the bells ringing. You could add an adverb like continuously to further the meaning. Not we were hearing the bells. That would give the bells an identity of communicating, like they were speaking to you.

Dear Mam, I think I have understood what you meant. I did not realise that even linking verb can be expressed in perfect tenses. Sorry about that!. Can you check if below conclusions and examples make sense? The past participle of the verb(be) = been. So if the subject has/had a subject complement between two timestamps TS1 and TS2, it makes perfect sense to express that using PERFECT TENSE. Simple Present Tense: I am good at Mathematics Present Perfect Tense: I have been good at Mathematics since Grade 5. Simple Past Tense: I was good at Mathematics in Middle School. Past Perfect Tense:: I had been good at Mathematics until High School. Simple Future Tense: I will be sober on my fortieth birthday. Madam, seasons greetings, I have heard that there are only 8 passive forms of 12 active tenses, there are no passives for future continuous and all the perfect continuous tenses , in the given example you have mentioned passive voice of the future continuous, what are the rules actually, please guide.
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this question Subhash. The future continuous is a tricky tense for the passive voice because it can become long and quite knotty as it contains 'be' and 'being' in quick proximity. She will be fighting the case in court next year. Active. The case will be being fought by her at this time next year. Passive I hope they will be cooking dinner by the time I get home. Active I hope dinner will be being cooked by the time i get home. Passive. It does not suit all verbs and can be quite clumsy in construction when future continuous is put into passive. This is why it is generally advised against. But technically, it is not incorrect.

@@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher Thanks Madam, okay , technically , it is not incorrect, could you mention the list of such verbs in your video from which future continuous can be changed into passive voice. I have so far not met /read any such examples of passive voice from active voice of future continuous tense, typically all have denied construction of future continuous into passive voice, then there can also be passive voice of perfect continuous of all three tenses. Have they ever been asked into exam question papers? Is this type of sentence acceptable in day to day English? It appears to be very odd. You are requested to give your expert opinion. with regard, subhash
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher5 жыл бұрын
@@subhashagrawal9955 I just gave you 2 examples that are perfectly acceptable according to me. But in most cases, they tend to be clumsy, so they are not used, nor will they be questioned in any exam. Now, whether they are passable or not, is not a "rule" thing, it is a sounding out of pattern. Hence, I suggest you steer clear of the future continuous in the passive voice, and leave it to those who have immense confidence in their ear recognition of language patterns to recognise the usability. This is my expert opinion. You must always take a second opinion. After all no two "experts" agree. No two grammarians would agree on the sticky points either. :)

Mam how can be 16 tenses ..I am truly confused now ?? The English does not contain any thing called passive Tense form ...they are conditionals tense like I would play (simple) I would have been played it's incorrect
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher4 жыл бұрын
Depends on whether you include the passive forms. Modals do not have tense forms. They are special verbs.

Mam, Here are the 2 sentences: Version 1: The first person to climb Mount Everest is Sir Edmund Percival Hillary Version 2: The first person to climb Mount Everest was Sir Edmund Percival Hillary
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher3 жыл бұрын
I think both are correct. Present tense is ok for a statement because it is an unalienable fact. (focus fact) But if you report it, past tense sounds better, as it is an event in the past and Hillary is no more. (focus time)

1) She had slept for 3 hours when I woke her up. 2) She had been sleeping for 3 hours when I woke her up. Are both 1) and 2) correct, or only 2) is correct. I am confused!
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher4 жыл бұрын
Yes both are correct. In 1) you have two fully completed past actions in the past, one after another. In 2) had been sleeping is past perfect continuous tense where a continuing past action upto the present is interrupted by an action. Both in the past. The continuous tense indicates the ongoing upto the present.

Dear Mam, These two sentence structures confuse me a lot 1. passive infinitive (to be) + adjective 2. passive infinitive(to be) + noun phrase Example: During clinical trials, the COVAX vaccine has been shown to be effective against the South African strain of COVID -19 virus. Can you explain what kind of sentences are these? Are these sentence some kind of reported speech? When do we use these sentence structures?
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher3 жыл бұрын
has been shown is passive - structure to be+ past participle verb + by (implied) . The active of this would be - 'has shown'. Either way it has to be followed by a complement as the verb 'show' (a linking verb) asks for a noun or subject complement (adjectival) to complete its sense. I can't just say the vaccine shows.... and stop. shows what? shows 'that it is resistant' (noun clause).. or shows resistance (abstract noun) or a infinitive noun pharse 'to be resistant (adj).' or even a gerund - to be resisting the vaccine. All subject complements will go back to the subject hence will have adjectives or adjectival functions. Type of sentence will depend on number of verbs. Both passives (reported) and actives are used in reporting.

@@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher Dear Madam, Which of two options is correct active voice representation of the given sentence? Option 1: Scientists have shown that the COVAX vaccine is effective against the South African strain of the COVID -19 virus. Option 2: Scientists have shown the COVAX vaccine to be effective against the South African strain of the COVID -19 virus.

Hi Ma’am, Could you please help us to know clearly when we need to avoid “by agent” in passive case. Would be helpful for competitive exams
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher4 жыл бұрын
You can drop the agent in passive voice. If I wanted to agent I would use active voice.

@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher4 жыл бұрын
She has taken her certificate is not passive. It is the present perfect tense in active voice. The certificate was taken by her is passive. For the above sentence The certificate has been taken by her is passive.
