Tenshin aikido ukenagaeshi / suriage hand deflections free online class. In this video Lenny Sly sensei show you how you can use two hand deflection with only using one arm movement. This particular hand deflection is good to use for setting up an iriminage. We hope you enjoy this one! God Bless

I've been a fighter all my life, judo, Ishin Ryu, catch wrestling, street fighting. The single baddest mf I ever saw was an ex Seal and aikido practitioner who could tear your freaking arm off if he wanted to. Technique demonstration for training isn't the same as combat execution of the technique. The distance is unrealistic in demonstrations to allow a clear view of the vectors that produce the force, direction and flow of the technique. You practice at long range to develop clear understanding of the timing, vectors, speed, coordination and recovery in execution, then over time as skill and muscle memory develop you work your way into combat range. Demonstration isolates the elements that practice integrates into a functional flow. Lenny Sly is for real, and his real world experience with hostile opponents is a matter of record. Aikido is no joke and neither is he. I wouldn't cross hands with him unless I had to.

This is the best video I've ever seen you (or anyone) produce on an Aikido technique! The reason? a) You did a great job of defining the attack. 1) You quickly reviewed the technique, then you showed how we were going to screw it up (brilliant!). 2) You went into greater detail on the technique. 3) MOST IMPORTANTLY, you showed several repititions at various speeds. (conspicuously missing from some of your earlier work). 3) You avoided going into a rant and kept the video breif and informative. Dude, I've been watching for a while and I have commented on some of your videos where you nailed the content, but ran way too long and went into a bit of a rant. That's the beauty of KZbin, people give creatorors feedback, which gives them the option to listen and adapt. I'm not saying that our comments are why you improved, but I will say that every since you've been back, your content is stellar, this being the absolute best! I'll finish by saying that my Aikido has worked in street defense 100% of the time and in possibly over 100 incidents. Your aikido is tuned to deal with real sitiuations like mine, but you are far better and more technical. I am positive that your Aikido is the correct way forward and I applaud you for taking the time and effort to share what you know! Thank you x10!

@@SLYSCOMBATIVECONCEPTS13 From you previous videos, I'm certain that you use techniques like these hand deflections to defend against strikes and simultaneously set the guy up for the (possibly brutal) finish. I think we both share the opinion that by that second deflection, it would be advantageous to put uke off balance. This likely being achieved by entering more, while doing the second deflection. Deflections further down the forearm (optimally at the elbow) are more effective at breaking uke's balance. In a repetitive drill format, which is fun and very effective at training these moves in to muscle memory, taking uke's balance isn't necessary, as it might impede the flow of the drill. However, it would be nice to demonstrate that you can (and should where possible) take uke's balance in the midst of certain hand deflections. I always say "if at all possible, break uke's balance/posture at (or even before) 1st contact".
@SLYSCOMBATIVECONCEPTS13
@SLYSCOMBATIVECONCEPTS13 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. As you said it’s not important to take uke’s balance while drilling these. Which is 100% true. Although one of the main objectives with these is don’t disrupt the angle of attack. If you do you give the attacked to change up and counter because he can feel where you’re trying to move him. Also these and a few other of my hand deflections are never done at the elbow. If their arm is extended and you’re deflecting at the elbow he’s gonna clip you in the face. Thank you for commenting I appreciate it. God bless

@@SLYSCOMBATIVECONCEPTS13 I'll take great care and consider all that you have said. Going forward here, I'm not disagreeing with you, just sharing. I've personally been trying to break balance at 1st contact, where possible. Virtually impossible from a jab, but helpful when possible. Double deflections, even if the second one is only an otherwise useless slap somewhere on the arm or body, causes a glitch in uke's CPU, that he then needs to recover from. I've got a buddy of mine who is a skilled collegiate wrestler, even with a useless double slap (not even a deflection), he looses his intent for just under a second. That's an eternity in a real fight. My original Sensi is a 7th Dan Shihan (not just in title, but in quality too). I haven't trained with him (or at any school) for 15yrs. But, I have recently shown him what I'm working on. Even he finds it highly difficult to deal with little slaps to the arm, chest or wherever, especially if it mildly effects balance. After a few examples, he said "ah, it's just informal artemi!". Then he quoted something O' Sensi was reported to have said, "Aikido is 90% atemi". Don't get me wrong, he's light years better than me, I just have the benefit of having used aikido in many real fights.

Hey I wanted to thank you. I've been training for 25 26 years now in multiple arts. Black belt TKD. Muay Thai since i was 15. Then BJJ since I was 24. I'm 32 now. I've studied a few others in between but these have been my biggest influencers. Now having kids of my own I want them to learn standing grappling and ground. And how to transition between them. so I'm planning on joining your online class cause the nearest aikido gym is 2 hours a way, covid and all that crap right now. I'm hoping that me and my wife will be able to learn enough to give them proper instructions once their older. My boys 2 and I've been doing the Gracie games with him so he doesn't even know he's learning BJJ. But I want to teach them standing techniques. That way they're will be well rounded and be able to handle bullies and what not without causing serious harm

Lenny, after discovering that I had missed some of your videos yesterday I find myself doubling down on my research..lol. I hadn't seen this one either. Short and sweet. Great description of how Ukenageshi gets adjusted because of the speed of the combination. It's a matter of staying tighter to the center line. I have some friends with Wing Chun backgrounds; they would say that a block (deflection for what you are teaching) need only be enough to make the strike miss, anything more is unnecessary. Doing the combination repeatedly with slowly increasing speed is great practice and pays off in both deflections getting more effective in other applications. Great stuff AGAIN.

He his A Nice person, and so were all the people at the Dojo. but still... Then I've met a Good teacher and father of one of my best friend who is developing his own mixed style of martial art. (between jujitsu Kali and Boxing JUKABO) and meeting him opened my eyes to the fact that Martial art need to be improving themself and renewing 'cause the world is chanhing. so I like very much YOUR take on AIKIDO, wich I loved ALSO for the spiritual or moral aspect of it!! Hello Sensei Lenny : ) What happened to your website? Is it still possible to join the online dojo or does one have to go to you directly? My uncle Johnny 101st airborne ranger (not really my uncle but my uncle nonetheless)if I remember correctly taught me some aikido and I believe it was tenshin since I remember in one of your videos you saying hand deflections were taught mainly in the tenshin style of aikido and that's what he taught me. I only know a few techniques and certain concepts, such as the " the hands are swords " " wherever the head goes the body follows " some defenses from grabs which i see do occur in videos i see on youtube such as guys grabbing another guy by their shirt pushing them up on a wall I see how certain aikido techniques can be applied in those situations. Ever since my brief time with uncle Johnny I've wanted to master aikido. I have successfully applied aikido principles when sparring, more so the pushing and pulling principles than exact techniques. I was able to bait a nikkyo during a jiu jitsu roll by presenting my forearm to my opponent and when they went to grab it i slid my arm back so they could grab my wrist and as soon as they grabbed it I applied nikkyo and pinned them to the ground on their stomach. I imagine you have an idea of what I'm describing hopefully : ) Another time I was sparring mma style and my opponent went to shoot in for a double leg takedown and I dropped down to the ground hands somewhere on their shoulders foot on their stomach and launched them. I credit this to my understanding of what aikido is. People will probably say that's judo but from what i understand and see judo and aikido are the same in principle. I have experience in other arts; boxing( the most years ), muay thai(briefly but remember all the basics I was taught ) bjj ( briefly but remember all the basics I was taught ). My goal is to learn everything I can about aikido, tenshin, yoshinkan, daito ryu, and eventually get in a ring or a cage and apply what I have learned. I don't mind doing this since I already have ring experience and the goal is to not get hit or taken to the ground I feel the crude form of aikido I do know is sufficient for this since I have already applied aikido principles successfully sparring against fully resisting opponents. Nonetheless I still think I need to learn more on how to deal with a variety of attacks. I wasn't expecting to see your website shutdown I was unpleasantly surprised to see that since I figured your online dojo would be online indefinitely. I am unable to travel to Chicago at the moment due to work related issues but still wish to learn and master this art and apply what I consider to be timeless principles against all forms of attack. I am truly grateful for your existence. I do hope to engage in a dialogue with you in some way shape or form. If you know anyone in Miami,FL who I can study under that would be a tremendous blessing. I do hope to meet you some day as well and train with you.

Hello again Lenny Sensei : ) I will be headed to garagegym.inc this Tuesday and I'm praying I find Angulo sensei there since i looked up the link you sent me for the address and it said inactive. I wouldn't be surprised if you guys trained with uncle johnny at some point, he said politics got in the way of him becoming an instructor if i remember correctly... i say remember correctly because this conversation happened in 2011. Believe it or not I'm literally just now learning about all these scandal accusations against Segal Sensei... I saw one chick apparently pulled out of her claim and some statements of hers indicating she was kinda shady talking about she knows how to trick men and that doesn't bode well for her case but i don't know all the details of everything against him i know there is more to it than just this one girl but there is two sides to every story ofcourse but it's devastating for me to learn of this since he's such a huge part of the aikido community it felt like a heavy blow and ive been ruminating over it and come to the conclusion that that's his personal life and has nothing to do with the art of aikido, just like you said in that podcast... I don't keep up with the social media at all sensei, im in my own world focused on what im focused on so im not up to date on any of the politics either that im coming to learn from those aikido podcasts ive listened to so far... i understand you kinda have to be in that social media thing being an instructor and all but anyways Im going off on a tangent. I don't expect a response from you since as you said it's alot to respond to I the main thing is im headed over there Tuesday and I will give you an update then. Have a blessed day : )

No you don't, look up your local wrestling/judo/BJJ school, much more realistic grappling. Aikido is the perfect martial art, but you have to be perfect for it to work.

I get internet burnout. I have two channels and I get that way from time to time. I don't even make content for my martial arts channel, I have sooooo much footage I don't need to. Been filming my training since the mid 90's so I have tons of material. Plus I film all my current training as well. Unlike you however, I don't have the base of people who want to watch it.

May I ask why you choose to deflect like that rather then just block?

No It’s steak or chicken with baked potato most of the time. Egg whites for breakfast, a couple protein shakes a day.

I studied Aikido for 10 years and I am out of touch with it sense an accdent I had back in 2008. I was wanting to meet with you and talk about the differences in our Aikido styles. Let me know if you have an email address I can reach out to you, if you want. I was thinking of trying to find your school in Chicago and take a Saturday and meet up with you so we could see the difference. Let me know what you think and thanks for you taking the time to read this.
