so basically: be conscious and use as little tension as possible but as much as necessary. imho a tense hand/arm IS generally bad for speed and precision (just like weight lifting/calluses on your palm and fingers ;). i used to work as stage builder/ industrial climber and could feel the impact in my fine motor skills. i think most people play with too much tension and the topic "how to use tension" is very, very advanced (apex jitteraiming for example). i guess most tension most players experience while conventionally tracking/flicking comes from too heavy mice and too high sens and is 99% unnecessary and disadvantageous (can recommend trying

@@Divinity_vA i use 1.2x800dpi, 43cm/360° a lot of people seem to think that low sens will make them slower. first glance it seems logical, longer distance = more time get mouse from a to b. tho speed is not the only factor - and in the end its about precision :) as a human you can only do very little to become more precise - maybe stop smoking, start eating/sleeping healthy and regularly, take care of your skin on palm/fingertips - but all of that will only change little. you know it. speed is what humans can improve way better. just do *anything* for a few hours - you gonna be already slightly faster. do it for a few thousand hours and you gonna be much faster. so instead of going for high sens and hoping for a miracle which might make you more precise :D just go for low sens and start practising to get faster. and no, it wont improve your aim. just like 240hz screen and a light mouse wont. but it will make it easier to improve to even higher skill levels - if you put in the time!

for starters you cannot be "relaxed" while aiming to begin with, by definition you need to contract muscles to move the mouse, but i get why "tension" is bad, when you feel stressed you have this impulse to tense up way way past what is required to aim at your very best, and this makes you aim worse instead, so really the ideal is to tense just the exact amount of muscle needed to be near 100% of your best

I think it's a very good example and explanation of the appropriate tension When I'm aiming and tracking an AD moving target, when I feel the force, I relax and slowly track the enemy again And there's a bit of tension when you flick it, which is a good video that explains very well that it's very natural

I've seen your other videos on aiming and I'd love to say that its helped me tremendously. This video was definitely a breath of fresh air for me. I've always overthought the fact that adding tension was detrimental to my arm, and not because I'm using too much tension. but I just had a thought that any tension was bad. so I always played with a relaxed aim. For me, I notice tension helps me with small clicking (that is, anything but tile frenzy BS) scenarios and reactive short strafes, especially with smaller targets. However, it makes me perform worse with smooth tracking and faster strafes. I think modifying your tension by the distance to the target is usually optimal, where, paradoxically, the closer you are to the target the more important it is to not tense. Another reason tension is so demonized is that people only notice it when the tension costs them. They enter a surprise close range engagement, they overshoot on their initial flick and tense up, and continue to overshoot when trying to find the range. Then they blame tension when really they should be blaming their game sense and their reaction to sudden stressors.

Awesome new footage mate! the addition of the eye-tracker is so great! loved it mate! And I have a video request mate, only if you have the time for it, you can absolutely ignore it if you don't. It's about "how arms should be resting on the desk", I know you've already covered it, but I just wish to know more from you about how it should feel to know that my arms are in their best height and resting well for aiming. It's because recently I've been unconsciously having so much pressure on the palm, while the forearm kinda of floating, which made my arm flicks feels so bad. And other times I would see myself doing the opposite, where my palm is not touching the pad at all, only my fingertips. Thanks for all the amazing contents mate! I really look forward to seeing them. Keep on the Unique & awesome work mate!

In my experience, tension and relax are different states in your "aim journey", normally when im lets say "in tension" is because im consciously trying to improve some aspect or im focusing on certain task, even when i have a bad day i tend to apply more tension, by other hand when i have interioriced the task or whatever im doing everything is smooth, working in that smoothness i really think that helps to get better

Well over time people are learning more and more about aim theory. There's some solid studies and statistical evidence out there by this point, though we still aren't quite there yet to fully understanding aim and aim improvement. Lots of what people say is still subjective, but those more informed on the matter at least base their info on facts and things that at least seem logical and/or experience-based. But just because they have enough experience to know that "x thing definitely works very well" doesn't mean everyone who accomplished the same thing has gone through the same process to accomplish that thing. If it were reliable, I'd love to "average-out" everything that every aim expert says, and get the ultimate "average" conclusion on everything. But that would definitely be a LOT of work haha. Anyway, my point is that while this video may seem very correct, we can't negect what other experts say. In this case I think most would agree with the video, many do in fact say similar things, but there's always exceptions, and because of that, relying on a single video does pose some risk, in the event that you may be that one exception where dynamically adjusting tension in your arm/wrist may not necessarily work for you personally! The only certain fact is that you gotta see for yourself to see what works best for you specifically, but it's a VERY good idea to "begin" your aiming improvement journey through learning and applying these good concepts first, and only LATER adjusting things based on what you find more success doing. Anyways, peace.

I think there is one issue with tensing at least for me and that is inconsistency. I feel like on some days i just apply more pressure than on others. I recently focused on to get rid of any tension and it took me about 3 months to do so but now i think beeing fully relaxed works better. First my aim felt completely off and i couldn't get on the target for some reason. Flicks got alot better wich was horrible at first to do without any tension. Tracking i still work on and the only time i tense a little bit is if the enemy is far away. I feel like for close reactive tracking it's way better to not tense. As you said you won't find the right answer and i'm sure this also depends on the person but my aim got better without tensing, first it feels like you are not able to do it but with a bit of work you get used to it. But def a good video,for some reason noone talks about tensing in their aim guides at least i found very little about it. Also sorry for my english :D

I was a tension player due to my chair being a monoblock chair and my table was tall and not customized for it, resulting arm placement higher and just planting my wrist on the edge of the table with no arm movement aiming, it didn't give me any problem at all and gave me an insane muscle memory that I could do an insane flicks and and a perfect 180 everytime I do a wrist spin, I'm also a claw player with a big cheap mouse resulting in more muscle usage, I was so obsessed with tension aiming that I would play csgo everyday and before a match of rank I would load up aim map and play for like 30+ min until my arm hurts meaning I'm ready to play rank. Now the biggest downside to this is after playing like a couple of games one your wrist hurts for doing repetitive flicks and only wrist movements alone, and your performance starts to dwindle until you start getting that wrist pain as you increase the tension thinking it would do better but do worse instead, you tried relaxing to reset but my habit on always playing with tension can't even let me rest. Personally tension aiming depends on a person just like me I was a wrist tension aimer that requires just the wrist so its easier for my muscle memory since I'm only using the whole wrist for movement and not the whole arm itself.

I just want to tell you about my own experience without watching the video. First of all, pressing the mouse was a mistake at first. As the days passed and I was trying to improve my aiming skills even more, I realized that this skill could not be analyzed in a single title. Reflexes, targeting accuracy, target tracking, target changing. As a matter of fact, it doesn't end here, a few more parameters are added depending on what you use this aiming ability for, such as trigger pull timing. There were times when I felt as if mastering these things did not take me forward, targeting under pressure could sometimes cause hand immobility and cause you to fall before you could lock the target. I went over this many times, but there is only one solution, to play calmly, to be able to show reflexes while calm, this is professionalism. If we return to our original topic, I can give an example from counter strike, if you are between your first 2000 and 3000 lines, it will be beneficial to use the pressure to stop the mouse (that is, the mouse should make a sudden hard stop immediately after moving quickly and calmly until it comes close to the target). But if you have much more experience you already know where to stop the mouse, so avoid any unnecessary force and movement. These were my honest experiences as someone who was once able to play t3

For me, I use tension depending on how I need to, but it comes naturally for me. If I need to flick far, more tension is required, but I don't have to think about it, if you know what I mean. I use what is required of me naturally depending on my circumstances. Most of the time, I will generally be relaxed or alert. When I first started playing games, I did just this, doing what was natural (probably because my mouse was big and fit my hand). But when I got actually into aiming, I intentionally tensed up more, but that caused me to mess up more often and reduced my focus on the game. I also made more mistakes trying to aim better with techniques that "should" have helped me. I recently switched back to less tense aiming because I just want to do what is natural. If I can comfortably hit shots without tensing or putting as much effort into it, that is good enough for me. Also, here's an unrelated tip if it hasn't been discussed, but I recommend changing fov settings if you want to track better. You may be over/under compensating when tracking sometimes, not realizing that the fov setting could be what impacts your tracking/aiming performance. Won't work on games with locked fovs tho.

You know this guy is very knowledgeable when he literally has a SINGULAR word for this entire thing - to be DELIBERATE. It is actually the EXACT word I was looking for, because I struggle with this thing where I'm literally NOT deliberate, and it is my #1 issue right now, in many aspects of my gameplay, not specifically aim. I'm an insane player sometimes, but more often than not I'm simply braindead, no idea how I'm a top 5% player. I do things that I literally KNOW I shouldn't do, and I don't know WHY I do them. Sometimes, I just completely forget things that I normally am very well aware of. This is holding me and my gameplay back by a LOT. And I think that it's because I just don't feel like I'm focusing enough on being deliberate - playing with a PURPOSE. Only acting when I know there's a reason behind it. I don't usually 'autopilot' or anything like that, but it's more that I just do the things that normally only autopiloting results in. It's kinda how the guy in the video mentions it, I'm "giving the enemy special treatment". I sorta "calm panic" and I begin to think that the enemy is impossible to beat. I may be closer to fixing that issue thanks to you, although it is an issue that is mostly unrelated to aim. I have a good enough understanding of mechanics and improvement of mechanics to know what exactly I need to be doing to maintain them, but I really am failing at applying those "transferrable" concepts to other areas of my gameplay, outside of aim. By the way, I mostly play Valorant, where active aim isn't even that crucial >.

It’s basically the same concept through badminton, you start with a soft grip then you harden it before you hit the shuttle which adds more power to your shot, having a good grip at your racket will give you more power. Same thing with a mouse, keep a tight but soft grip on your mouse when tracking then for flicks, tight and tense it before the flick.

As someone who played a lot of minecraft pvp, where you need to constantly tense up your arm, and recently switched to CS:GO and more tactical first person shooter games, I have been having trouble being calm during aiming. You can definitely get used to constantly being tensed up and use it to your advantage. It definitely isn't limiting my aim a lot, but in some situations I will have a moment where I cannot move my hand due to the tension. I also find myself constantly being tensed up and stressed. Hopefully this video will help with it, thanks a lot.

Love your vids and this one is pretty much on the money except I think I should clarify something as pertains to what I work with every day, kinesiology, the study of human movement. Thankfully its a simple truth that, if not already known, easy to understand. TL;DR functional movements only activate the obvious muscles while deactivating the opposing muscles. Turning both on during a movement is not only not functional and increase inaccuracy and inconsistency, its a bad habit that is prone to injury. You are correct in saying you should only call upon the correct amount of tension but there's a something specific that many tend to do which is not the right kind of tension we're looking for. If we are activating all our muscles to gain more mouse control its NOT a functional movement, and in the end not good neurologically. When we move naturally, even with quick movements, we are only supposed to turn on certain groups of muscles to contract and turn off the muscles that would oppose them. Activating all the muscles at the same time when moving will only create unwarranted tension and too much of it could eventually result in a repeat stress injury. An artist doesn't tense up to make accurate brushstrokes. A sprinter is not going to stress opposing muscles at once to gain speed. Even when physically aiming with a real gun, you're NOT going to tense up everything to quickly aim at a target. You will naturally activate only the muscles required to go into the right direction, and in order to stop on target, you're going to naturally activate the opposing muscles to decelerate rapidly. This concept should be applied to everything we do, let alone mouse movements.

I think when people say "tension is bad for aiming" they mean more tension than necessary for a prolonged period of time is bad. If you are tense all the time for no reason it doesn't help your aim. Your muscles will just get tired so that you won't have energy for moments when you need the tension, like flicks or reactive tracking. Constant tension also greatly increases the risk of injury. When I was new to FPS games I used to tense up to the max during any type of tracking and also inbetween flicks. I think that's a common thing to do for inexperienced players and thats the type of tensing up that's bad for your aim and health.

The only reason you should ever think about any of this is if you've already developed an issue caused by training due to something you read. You'll naturally do what works best for every situation as you gain more experience and you're going to do it so much faster than he implies. I just noticed that when I move my mouse at a faster than normal pace I only tense up for the movement before relaxing a bit for finer tracking adjustments.

Even my gamestyle plays around it I always look for opportunities that I don't have to take a fair 1v1 while this is good it came out of my tension creep happening when i do try a 1v1 because it's not a 50/50 ever. specifically recoil seems to automatically cause my brain to think I need more tension then add powercreep and I'm gripping my mouse like a maniac

When I played on high sens I had a super relaxed grip. But I was also using a VERY heavy mouse. So there are different factors... even hand size/shape and natural dexterity will alter how these details affect your aim since I've been on a lighter mouse and much lower sens, I've had to think a lot more about when to use tension. My pretty consistent relaxed fingertip grip wasn't viable to the same degree it had been You indicate that you watch a lot of stuff like this - so you can probably appreciate the idea that aim is actually quite complex of a topic with so many variables that interact with each-other in different ways. It's difficult to make accurate generalizations
@FlurryMainchin
@FlurryMainchin Жыл бұрын
This isn't me disagreeing with you in favor of Struth btw, I don't have an opinion on which generalization is more accurate (even though statistically one of you HAS to be more correct) The way I interact with this stuff is just take in the ideas and see how well they apply to me specifically, because I know that everyone is different. And I only know my own experience intimately - not enough data to draw conclusions from

hi, i thought this video was really interesting.(context: im a musician) im not sure if i agree or disagree with you, because i dont know a lot about aim techniques or styles. I was very curious when i saw this video because, as a trombonist, tension is extremely bad for slide technique and speed, you can actually play significantly faster with a very loose and relaxed hand and relaxed forearm. I have always been taught that tension is the enemy of good sounds, consistency, and speed (not only for the arm/hand motions but tonguing as well). I assumed the same was true for aiming but i never really heard anything about that in the gaming world until now. cool video : )

"Tension has a way of accelerating your perception of time." My god, I never put 2 and 2 together. Whenever I watch static/ ts vods, whether they're someone else's or my own, they always look so much slower paced than what I'm seeing while actively grinding. I'm even aware I frequently use too much tension lol

While I was testing using tension in game, I find myself loosening my grip and lowing my tension when I need to use my side mouse buttons. I'm wondering if using the side buttons in game Is hindering my ability to aim?

You've probably figured it out since it's been a month but the mouse buttons ruin my aim, I use the side buttons for voice chat and when I'm talking my aim becomes sloppy.

Before watching this vid, I'll say the following: You can't move something smoothly if you tense the muslce that moves. Try tensing your hand and then drawing with that tensed hand a smooth ANYTHING. It'll be jittery mess.

I didn't know it was controversial amongst the FPS community to have tension, because that goes against what the pro players actually do and sometimes even teach. If you look closely at shroud in montages where he is recorded, you can tell he is not totally relaxed, and this further shows when you see him shake his hand to release tension mid fight. If I recall correctly, there's a video where n0thing mentioned you want to keep the tension in your arm but away from your hands in order to not have your microadjustments and flexibility compromised while also keeping the speed.

@@PurrkourCat depends on the situation. close range its better to not tense at all and you should be able to follow your target without any jittery mouse movement. but dont overthink this. just try to hold your mouse without any pressure and not tight and usually your arm follows up. it should just feel natural like you would hold a pencil

Pro tip for those wanting to feel the bad tension, I'd recommend a metronome you set higher and higher, aiming for 85% accuracy to move up to the faster beat. Its the easiest way for me to deal with my tension and grip personally.
