I have used the one from the French army, with all the same. As long as it doesn't rain you save the situation, it protects you from the wind, a drizzle, you get away from mosquitoes or other insects a little, it makes a night more pleasant if it doesn't rain, if it rains it comes in water, it is a single canvas, and the waterproofness is low
@AntSurviveTheNight3 ай бұрын
If its anything like the Lavvu matey it needs yo be left out in the rain for a few days on its own so that the fibers of the canvas can knit together, try that 👍

With the Dutch, poke the ends of the zip outside through the holes. Helps to stop the water following the zip inside.

@@AntSurviveTheNight It turned up today and I'm happy. It has doors both ends which is good for the photography. No mesh however. The tent itself is spot on 2kg like someone designed it to be so. I realize I'm "late to the party" but thanks for the comparison. I have the Dutch Army tent (2 exactly-which I did zip together) and have used it in rainy conditions. It did have some leakage at the corners, but after I tensioned the ropes, it stopped. Being canvas, it does get hot in warmer weather. I modified mine using Velcro and mosquito netting over the door. Works great. I'm looking at the F2, and I think I'm going to pick one up, just to have. Again, thanks for the comparison.

@BushmanAOD4 жыл бұрын
thumbs up mah man, I have both but my Frenchie is the canvas F1 - Im a total canvas fanboy as I feel synthetics just reflect too much light and can be seen between foliage from just too far away to justify the weight difference. Then theres sunlight penetrating in the morning, synthetics turn into a damn oven if its sunny so you have to get up then theres light inside the tent at night, again synthetics turn into large lanterns when lit from inside - whereas a candle lantern under canvas can in some casesnot even be visible from 5 meters away. I used my F1 in the Peak District a couple months back just before lockdown and had to throw a Basha over it as a flysheet which saved me as it rained half the time - but I did have super heavy downpour in my first camp in it and there was only one drip which got sorted once I tightened the guy lines on the ends of the two poles. 07:15 you show the ends of the zips, you are absolutely right BUT, heres the trick, force the ends outside the tent otherwise they work as a drip wick and the water does 100% leak in from those holes. About a UCO lantern in the dutchie, I have an idea (modification) which I've been meaning to do for a while now, when I do I will upload a how-to viddy on it. Yes, the F1 does open up both sides, it helped me on my peak district camp as I cooked on one end (away from the resevoir / cars side so no one saw my tangia flames) and kept the other end for checking out the views etc! nice video buddy catch you soon

Hello Bushman, a great comment mate fill with information. Canvas is just the best isn’t it, certain tents/shelter made out of canvas can be quite light. One of these I think is the Lavvu, lots of people say they are heavy but to me it weighs no different to my Vango Banshee. Your dead right regarding all of your comments about synthetic and the one that gets me the most is the lantern issue. I love having either a UCO or a storm lantern but you can’t with synthetic. I have a 4 season synthetic tent that I got rent with but here’s the thing, it’s white and you see it from miles away when you have a lantern inside it lol. The canvas F1 sounds very nice and like the tip about cooking one end and views the other if your in possible view of people. I’ll look forward to seeing what you do with the Dutch. Thanks again for a awesome comment mate, Ant 👍.

I like the French tent better. In the Dutch, you have to lay your head in a part of the tent where there is not a lot of headroom. The French is your basic A frame;-- about 5 by 7 and around 40 inches tall. That is a trail tent, basically. A pup tent or scout tent. My favorite if it has mosquito screens. A few versions of the French DO have those screens.
@AntSurviveTheNight Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, thanks for your comment. What I like about them both is you have the room to sit up in both. This feature is sorely missed on a lot of tents that are the same weight as the French or heavier. The French is a good go to tent for the summer and you can cope easily in it with the winters we have over here. It’s a lot lighter than the Dutch too. Thanks once again Mark. Cheers, Ant

Ant I have a few points here and will address them as we go through this video: Firstly I see you lost 2 pegs which made you 2 short. How is 5'9" too short?. Second point is that I had an option to buy 2 new tents or get the under-quilts for the hammocks. We are waiting for the 2 new tents to make it home. Thirdly, those tents are prone to the issues you have highlighted and there are fixes on you tube. One suggestion would be to use your dpm woodland Basha to extend the back? I myself made a bug net from an older damaged dome tent and the zip ends could easily be covered with a flap, proofed and Velcro'd? The basha would extend the back end of the tent or of course you could add a second tent and make it a double. End of the day it is "horses for courses". You take what you want for the situation you are in. I take the car so weight is not going to be an issue. Make it how you want it Ant and I will hear from you soon :) Rach

The F2 was certainly developed because the F1 was way too sophisticated and useful, when in my mandatory military service in the 80's, you only trained 3 to 5 weeks before being assigned to a precise unit, and there was very little long term manoeuvres with camps being mounted for more than a couple days. The F2 was way cheaper and simple, the F1 being made with canvas was prone to rotting if not dried in good conditions. I now own 2 F1's and 1 F2, for organizing games with kids for quick set up and agility challenges. The F2 is a little too fragile for hard handling in many occasions. I also own a desert color F2, that I used for storage when camping. Boy are some of you guys lucky, the tents I have are real surplus used stuff, some of those tents in the UK and US are literally brand new.

That's what i like about them, they are cool looking, but practical just isn't there. For a start, you always need soft ground to peg into. If you where in a campsite in Morocco you'd not get a peg into the ground during summer time. Yes i know, pour a jug of water on the ground.. I used a standalone with clip waterproof cover, 2 minutes flat while my friend arsed around with jugs of water. Weight also, if you're hiking with an extra 6kg you'll feel it. My standalone was less than 1kg for £60 and lasted for a year and half. And sure, if your camping once a blue moon and driving to a camping spot with a 30 minute hike.. great. But i just feel the cons are to much. Nothing wrong with a standalone and tarp set up over anything else I've used or seen.

Hello James sorry for the mega late reply, I have just not been receiving notifications for this vid. You can always take a small hammer which people do when they encounter hard ground, not bad, quite light mate. Thanks very much and sorry once again, Ant 👍

And yes F1 opens both ends and is very waterproof, whereas the nylon version has been reported to leak...definitely a 1 man tent with kit............

The Dutch most likely transported these behind the troops. Then when sleep is available they got it back but most likely not the same one they just slept in 4 days before. lol

In the Military they don't care if you like one another or not. If it says two man, they will put two men in it.

I feel sorry for those that can’t find a canvas f1 and are stuck with a garbage f2 that flaps in the wind leaks water like a mother and leaves tons of condensation inside from your breath from breathing all night... They shoulda never quit making the canvas ones what a mistake....

Hello Mac, they are still easy to get hold of if you choose to want one but I chose the lighter option, I have a couple of canvas tents and know how heavy they are especially in a long hike. With a little seem seal they are mint. Thanks for watching pal, Ant 👍
