This absolutely fixed my hard cold start problem. When I bought my 2005 it had been sitting so long the gas was varnished. I cleaned the carb twice but missed the area described in this video. My bike starts cold now with the choke like it should. Thank you.

I just purchased a ttr125 that had sat with gas for over 3years. Cleaned the carb out several times and couldn't get it to start until I stumbled on your video. I didn't notice the hole in the float bowl that you showed. I tried your suggestion but was unsuccessful, Until... I used a guitar string and pushed it all the way through. The drill bit technique doesn't bend thus not cleaning the hole all the way. Thanks a bunch! Bike starts immediately and idles like a champ!

Good to hear, the hole is actually shapped like an L so straight in from the top then if carb cleaner doesnt flow through clean the hole from the bottom of the bowl side with a wire or similar. Glad I got you in the right direction.

First off...Hit that "SUBSCRIDED" button! My son has a 2003 TTR125 and always had trouble cold starting his bike! He was ready to do a carb clean or replacement then we watched your video! He did the repairs himself on the choke circuit and the bike starts right up for the first time since he has owned it! Great video and content, so easy a twelve year old can do it! Holy crap, years and cans of ether. My daughter's bike hasn't been run in 2 years. I clean up the carb and it wouldn't start. I saw this video, drilled that out and it fired up in 3 kicks. Again, after sitting for 2 years. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. Absolutely spot on. FWIW I used a common 1/64th bit and it worked fine.

This totally worked for my 06 ttr 230. I just found some small stranded wire laying around and took a strand of that to use for cleaning out that pick up hole and some carb cleaner. also cleaned out the gas tank well to get all the old reserve gas out. put it al back together and it fired up first thing with the choke on and then ran fine after cutting the choke off. finally no more starting fluid!! thanks again!

This fix works like magic, you won't believe it ! I struggled for years with hard starting and a idling issue !!! I used a 1-64 drill bit to drill out the orfice that worked great, you can find that bit size at any hardware store, I also changed the pilot jet in the carb from a stock #15 to a #17. I did not change the standard main jet. FYI, there is a tiny slow idle adjustment screw on the side of the carb and a mixture screw on the " underside of the carb", ( its very hard to get to, its on the engine side of the carb. Thanks tepco1 !!!

Tepco, Your video while it didn't solve my problem directly pointed me in the right direction. My issue wasn't the port itself being plugged but a dead spider in the air vent hose at the "T" on the choke side of the carb. I pulled the hoses and when I blew through the one with the 45 degree cut on it there was resistance. The spider was so petrified that I had to press a drill bit through the hole. After clearing the hose the bike now runs like new. Immediately starts when stone cold good high idle on the choke and warms up and is ready to ride in a few minutes.Like new. I have had the problem for over a year and had taken the carb apart a few times. Thanks for getting me thinking...it was a huge help! Matt

@Don, #2&#4 may be related. If the bike is leaking fuel from the overflow there is only one way it can and that's from the float not cutting the fuel off when it should. This can be caused from the float being stuck or the float valve and seat are old/dry and not sealing, or your float height is way off. If this is the case it will run rich and hard to tune. Make sure you can see light through your pilot jet, also make sure your mixture screw has the spring washer then oring or it won't seal and will suck air. GL lmk how it goes, valve adjustments are easy on those and if you can strip carbs down you can do a valve adjustment. I have 2 TTR125'S so I'm sure I'll be doing a valve adjustment vid sometime.

Just want to say you saved me a major headache,,I soaked my carb in Chem-Dip 24 hours even with the float bowl,Then air pressured blew it out..still same thing wouldnt start,But then I seen your idea and noticed soon as I blew carb clener in that float bowl hole it wasnt coming out down there at bottom..So sprayed it 4 ,5 times more down in there even though my long pin would go down in there it needed something more which is carb cleaner and high pressure air..Sure enough it fires on first kick now!..So just want to say Thanks for the help! excellent video. Easy to follow and relate to. Problems with my sons bike are 1: Hard to start as in your video, (I'll give your fix a shot this weekend) and 2: Won't idle at anytime, no matter if it's hot or cold and #3: The choke has to beld up or it'll slide back down. #4: Fuel often comes out the overflow tube, sometimes even when the bike is running. I'm planning on replacing the the choke cable to fix #3. #2 & #4 have me stumped. Carb has been cleaned numerous times and new jets installed. Adjustments have been made on the idle adjust screw and no luck. Time for you to make a video showing how to do a valve adjustment?

Well after drilling the fixed jet in the bowl it would start but it made the carburation extremely rich, with the 'choke' off. It was a fail on our 2002 ttr125. I realized that the enrichment circuit was sucking the gas up through the float bowl - through the 'closed' choke valve and into the intake of the engine. Suspect that our machine being 20 years old had some wear that was not noticed on the original repair in the video. After a period of thought, I figured that I could drop in a small o-ring into the bottom of the choke bore, ensuring that there was no leakage. The standard spring pushes the piston closed against the o-ring. Wow back to normal. It started in 10° F weather in 2 kicks. Had to get the idle mixture turned back out to about 1.75turns. Carburates normal throughout the range. So with the addition of an o-ring the drill mod works great. I bet a lot of TTR125s have this problem with fuel being sucked from the closed choke.
@TepcoCycleRepair
@TepcoCycleRepair Жыл бұрын
I'm assuming you made sure it was closing all the way? Sounds like the O-ring helped but didn't fix the issue. The rubber at the bottom of the plunger probably gets dried out and leaks like you described. And if it's not closing all the way that's another issue. It shouldn't be sucking any fuel through that port with the choke/enricher off.

I actually cleaned the bottom end of the Carb about a month ago and it was running great. It is my Sons and it doesn't get ridden a lot. I restored this whole Bike top to bottom. Either it got dirt in it again from sitting or I am thinking it is the starter relay which is the only thing I did not replace yet... It is only 8.00 so I got it anyway. My other 2 Sons ride CRF 70 and these things can sit for months and kick right over.

Of all the videos about the TTR I've watched, yours is the 1st one to explain and diagnose exactly what's happening with mine. I'll have to try your method in the AM and see if I can get her to fire up. I knew I had to do something with the carb but none of the others mentions what you mention. Is there a reason you don't use carb cleaner or sea foam to free it up? I'll have to let you know how it goes. Many thanks and wish me luck.

The reason I asked the below question is a 750 v twin front carburator seems to be having a similiar problem. I took it out and cleaned it up and it ran great for about a week and then it acts like it isn't getting enough fuel. The exhaust is warm on that cyl...... and will fry your fingers on the other. Compression's are great. Spark is good. It's up on the stand again now and ready for the carb to come out.......

Your pilot jet is clogged, its the thin jet that is a 15 stock OEM part # is 5HP-14142-15-00. You will need to get a VERY fine wire to clean it out (I use a brick brush bristle) or just replace it with a new 17.5. If it runs with the choke on and dies when you flip the choke off, your choke is working.

Thanks! Going to clean mine rite now, it been getting progressively worse so I'm sure that's it. My choke also froze shut once and broke the cable! Thinking of selling this thing and getting another XR80 That bike starts when you look at it. ; )

Great, yes clean that choke plunger and put some oil on it to prevent it from sticking. After you clean the choke hole like the video it will start like a charm. XR80's are good bikes working on one now a classic 1979.

Will this problem reoccur? As have had trouble starting my 07 ttr 125 since brought it and its been so frustrating to try and start.. This weekend i have given up and want to get rid of it due to it not starting. But thinkin of reconsidering it after watching this and might clean the card and jets and choke..

Keep the bike, we can fix it. The bike in the video is a 2007 with 12 fender/number plate on it. I have seen carbs go bad from one winter season. If you brought this to me here is the order of repair. (assuming you have good compression) Check for spark, flush all fuel! this is usually over looked, you want to be sure you have fresh gas with no water in it. This ethanol fuel attracts water and it will sit at the bottom of your tank and or fuel can. Get your tank dry and put some fresh super in it from a can you filled from empty! Then pull your carb and make sure your choke is moving 5:56 in the video. Then pull your jets and make sure you can see light through them. The pilot is the thin long one, the hole is tiny you must see light through it. You don't need to replace them just make sure you can see light through them and carb cleaner blows through them. If you have to replace them, get OEM ones not cheap China jets. Then unscrew your mixture screw, its the one at the front of the carb going straight up from the bottom, it is a screw/spring/washer/oring in that order. pull them, careful the washer and o-ring are tiny, dont lose them. Blow carb cleaner through that hole as well. Put it all back in reverse order GENTLY seat, then back it out 2.5 turns. Do the repair in the video, then shoot carb cleaner down the hole at 7:07 in the video and make sure it comes out in the bottom of the bowl. If you have compressed air shoot that through all the holes you shot carb cleaner through and I would highly recommend you get a wire small enough to manually push through every jet, I use a wire from a brick brush. Put it all back together and fire it up. GL Please let me know how it works out or if you need any further help.

Should be the same thing! Make sure your pilot jet is clean as well, that's the most common problem I see on bikes that sit a lot. If the bike idles perfect and revs up fine when warm, don't worry about the pilot, just do the above repair. GL

I responded in a message by mistake so I will respond here so others can see. The hole gets clogged by debris, like dirt or corrosion old gas etc. so it has to be manually cleared out. Carb clean and the like are not strong enough to clear it. I would use the carb cleaner to clean out any loosened up gunk and corrosion you created and to be sure it is flowing freely.

Thanks for posting! Did this and the bike started, but I can not use the choke as it kills the engine immediately? Any ideas? I may have enlarged the hole a bit, but apparently that should not be an issue. Just purchased the bike recently so I am unsure of its history, but it was running well and started fine when we got it and after the first long ride the cold start became and issue. Seemed to idle to low as well, so I adjusted the idle screw a tiny bit (1/16 of a turn maybe).
@TepcoCycleRepair
@TepcoCycleRepair 10 жыл бұрын
If you made the hole big, its going to suck up more fuel then normal and flood it which will stall it. It will also make you have to turn the choke off quicker after cold start. Many engines will stall if you pull the choke when its running so no sweat there. Make sure your pilot jet is clean and adjust the idle and mixture screw to get a smooth idle.

tepco1 Thanks. I need to pull the carb and do a full clean, I was short on time and only did the bowl. I tried the bike the next day and it started right up with the choke pulled about half way and did not need it within seconds, so I think the choke cable may need some adjustment (if it can be) as I think it is trying to pull it too far. But it starts better and that was the goal. I won't play with anything else untill I get it apart and properly cleaned.

@@TepcoCycleRepair Right on... I have the same issue with my son's bike now. I've had the bowl off 3 times now. After I put it back on, it fires right up but goes back to not starting the next day. There seems to be a chunk of dirt floating around in the lower end of the passage that gets sucked up and plugs off that tiny little hole in the brass plug. I don't know what Yamaha was thinking, that brass plug should be at the very bottom of the passage and visible from the inlet. Anyways, I'm sure I'll get it sorted eventually, thanks for the video.

tepco, is it an accurate to conclude that if idle elevates when the choke is on, and lowers when the choke is off, that this hole is not clogged and fuel is getting into that chamber for the choke circuit just fine? I have a 17.5 pilot, and what I would consider an extremely clean carburetor, but it can still be a bear to get started when it's cold.
@TepcoCycleRepair
@TepcoCycleRepair 10 жыл бұрын
Yes that is correct if the RPM changes when you move the choke that shows that it's working, if it's still hard to start it could be your pilot jet, if it idles usually the pilot jet he's okay but ,try that and see how it works .

my son has the 2006 TTR-125E. he sank in in a puddle last year, we cleaned it out, drain all fluids, and it ran like a top,. we didn't ride for about 4 months and the choke cable will not pull out now. in your video you reference a choke that is stuck in the housing. if i remove the nut from where the choke cable goes into the carb, should it just pull out.or is it connected to something inside the carb?
@TepcoCycleRepair
@TepcoCycleRepair 9 жыл бұрын
Yes loosen the nut where the cable goes into the carb and the choke will pull out. Now that yours is stuck it wont come out easy, you will most likely need to pull the nut up and spray a penetrating oil in there and work it out. After you get it out clean it good and in the hole then lube it with oil, I use Superlube its like dielectric grease. Good luck its stuck in there from corrosion so be patient, I've had some that didnt come out but after 4 months you should be able to get it.

Wonder if this would be the same issue my 2009 KTM 450 XCF is having. Bike has a real tough time starting when cold, even worse almost impossible in high altitude. When I got the bike carb was REAL dirty, cleaned it 3 times, also went to set the float and from the factory settings when the float is level I get no gas, I them I adjusted it down in the bowl a little more and then the carb would get gas and the bike would run. Now when the bike is hot it starts fairly easy "most" of the time but not all the time. Do you think this could be the choke circuit hole? Or the float setting, or something else? Driving me nuts! Any help you guys could provide would be awesome!!!! Thanks!
@TepcoCycleRepair
@TepcoCycleRepair 7 жыл бұрын
Neil Cowan When the float is level it should cut the fuel off. Choke circuit may be the issue although I would check your valves. Tight valves will cause a similar problem but harder to start when hot. I would check, compression, (auto decomp will make it read low, see leak down test below) valve clearance, pilot jet, mixture screw, and if you have the ability do a leak down test which is very important and will answer many questions. I would also start with stock jetting, make sure you can see light through the pilot jet and the mixture screw is set to..try 2 turns out to start and adjust from there.

Great advice, I'm definitely going to try this right now. My bike would sometimes start while the choke was open but it wouldnt idle, or the idol was extremely low. so I would adjust the fuel screw, then as the bike warmed up it would idol extremely high so I would have to readjust the screw and turn it back down. I've already jetted the carb. I've read lots of stuff about the air screw and the fuel screw. Do you have any advice on this? My bike is a 2005 Yamaha TTR Le 125 thanks!

Yes, set your mixture screw to 2 turns out to start. Make sure, I mean 100% positive, you can see light through the pilot jet. The pilot jet will stop the bike from idling properly if clogged. This repair will fix cold starts, but if it can't idle it's something else. (Most likely the pilot jet)

@@heidihicks9585 sounds like it might be going lean. When it starts, spray carb cleaner around the carb intake boot and cylinder head gasket area and see if that changes the idle. Sounds like it might be sucking air in somewhere. Or fuel flow to the carb is restricted. If you have an online filter, remove it.
