I didn't say that if it smells and tastes amazing it's got additives. There are lots of tequilas that taste and smell amazing that are natural. If it smells and tastes excessively sweet, with over powering flavors like vanilla, caramel ets with no other flavors mixed in. Then good chance it's got additives.

Do we know if Camarena repo has additives? It’s my fav tequila under $50 and the caramel/vanilla doesn’t taste overly rich in the same way that casamigos does. I like the richness of casamigos, but prefer the natural stuff even if it’s not as sweet.

Camarena Tequila is made using a diffuser. (a big machine) I won't drink it because it's not good. Chances are extremely high when they use a diffuser that there is additives in it. Sorry. Try some of the other brands I talk about on here and compare them to it. I am sure you will see a huge difference.

What do you recommend for someone who like the sweetness of Camarena/casamigos but doesn’t want additives? I know that without additives they probably won’t be as sweet, which is fine. I just don’t like the “earthy” or oakey tequilas as much. For example, im not a huge fan of Cazadores or padrino (too earthy/oakey for me). I forget if it was you or someone else that mentioned G4 in one of their videos(?). Thanks for your help.

Don Julio 70th is a Anejo that had been carbon filtered to remove the color and some flavor gets removed too. It's not a good tequila.

Wow, what a great video! BTW, how much do you despise tequilas with additives in them, in a scale from 0 - 10? Do you just avoid them at any cost or are there one or two that you enjoy? I ask because I do enjoy Don Julio 1942 and after knowing it's got additives, I started tasting the additives so that kind of ruined it for me :) Thanks for educating my palate though :)

Saw Casamigos Reposado in a bar and got some to sip, to see if it was worth putting in the cabinet. Had literally the WORST fake vanilla flavor I’ve ever had in a tequila, it was legitimately awful. People pay $60 a bottle for this garbage that’s on the same level as cheap flavored vodka. I’ve begun a love affair with Espolon and they don’t seem to use additives in the blanco or repo, I’d be curious to know your thoughts.

A tequila producer could add any of the additives discussed in the video to turn a blanco into a cristalino if they wanted to. Like I said in the video, it is against the norma to do so but there is a loophole.. so.... Thanks for watching!

I find that when I buy some of my favorite Tequilas in Mexico they are lower proof and smoother. I.e gran centenario, don julio and Corralejo. Are these lower proof and smoother due to additives.

No, they are lower proof for tax reasons in Mexico. They proof them down with water to avoid paying higher taxes. When you add water to tequila it will get "smoother" since water is the most "smooth" liquid there is.

Not sure if you'll see this, but you mention around 4:15 there are some loopholes that some use to add additives to blancos. Additives in aged products are fairly well documented and discussed, but this is the first time I've heard about blancos as well. It does kinda make sense (Classe Azul blanco for example is very sweet). Can you talk a bit more about these loopholes, or maybe do a video if there's enough content?

I see all the comments.. :) I am not familiar with the loopholes to talk about them specifically but was basically told by the master distillers that the wording of the NORMA is done so loosely that there are ways to get around it. As we all know, there are some blancos out there where it is evident that some kind of additive was used in the creation of their blanco.

The agave gods spoke, i think. Tried what was left in the cap... yuck! Like sweet perfume. So, exchanged it for... the Siete Leguas Anejo (only $1 more!)... saw your review of all three of theirs and it clinched my decision. Haven't tried yet, but I did open to sniff it; agave! Can't wait. Great video, had always heard about additives but didn't know they were so widely used. It does make sense, you can tell natural tequila isn't necessarily always wonderfully sweet and pleasant, it's got interesting flavors that may be off-putting for some but unique nonetheless. Here's an interesting idea for a video: "Most Common Tequilas Casual Drinkers Enjoy But Connoisseurs Despise (or at least are not as enthusiastic about)". Typical examples: Clase Azul Reposado, Herradura Ultra Añejo (the cristalino one), Don Julio 1942. Note they normally tend to be vanilla/additive bombs. I started enjoying tequila about a year ago in a trip to Mexico and at the time I tried and loved the Herradura, but I thought to myself "oh wow, it's really sweet, almost unnatural". More recently, I got a bottle of 1942 and really started to smell and taste the additives after watching this video. Now, I've been trying to stay away from additives and am starting to enjoy the additive free ones.

You really don't like additives in your tequila. I really don't mind it as long as it's just that 1%, say no to mixtos. I like 1942 it's by far my fav tequila. I also come from the world of rum where additives are common so maybe I am biased. Good video regardless!

Man, you just confirmed what I was suspecting. I got couple of bottles of Casa Amigos and I immediately said to myself that there was not way that a 100% pure tequila will give you so much vanilla , even my 15 years old daughter detected the vanilla :( Right now I am waiting for a bottle of Cascahuin 48 and Fortaleza anejo, I hope they are up to my expectations.

Thanks for you comment. It's widely known that the ones I mentioned do have additives and you can definitely taste them.
