I recently bought the stainless version as the carbon was out of stock. I am very impressed with ruggedness and quality of the blade. I gave it a light strop and it's like a razor. Varusteleka are great folk to deal with, rapid delivery and excellent humour throughout their product descriptions as well as their You Tube videos. Another bonus is they are wholly made in Finland, not some Far East steel with a Nordic/ Scandi name. Thanks for your review. All the best from Scotland. Garry

When on the field in the army, soldiers take usually 1 hour long shifts feeding the fire of the half-platoon tents stove. The stove has to be kept warm all night because all the four seasons are quite cold out here. Watching over the fire when everyone else is asleep is boring as hell, so thats when the traditional carving task comes in. Just something to pass time! What comes to some knives having dull spine; I think that was the Mk. I of the Jääkäripuukkos. New ones have the sharpened spine right from the box.

I have the 140 cm. version of this knife (same price as the 110 cm.) and am very pleased with it. The Varusteleka website is well worth a look. Their own make of military / outdoor kit is good value. If it performs well in Finland, it is suitable for Scotland, where I live. As to the kit, I think humour is often specific to the society that produces it. We have American comedy programmes on scottish television, most of which I don't find at all funny, though the audience obviously seem to. As an ex-paratrooper, I appreciate that the "wooden cock" joke, as explained by Marcus Lepola below could be hilarious.

When people are around campfire many tend to just carve away a stick. In Finland folks call that often thick stick or branch leirikyrpä meaning camp dick. Then it turned into this weird art of carving chocks. Now you know.

Diane, I just checked and I see the 110mm Carbon is available (16 of them) right now without the sheath, for $30. And the 140mm is available with or without the sheath (I just ordered one). I'd keep a close eye on the site because they may have the 110mm sheath version any day. I see the Skrama is available now too, was debating on getting it but I don't really need it. I hope you get one, I'm sure you will like it. Glad I was able to share with you. Thanks Diane.

sameold77 I've noticed after using the Garberg for about 3 months now that the handle actually gets a softer feel to it. Mine is really cool feeling now, at first I wasn't sure about it but now it feels a bit like wood very dense yet smooth. I do really want the 140 cause the length but at the moment I got plenty of scandi knives, your Brakimo looks cool wish their handles weren't so thin though.
@Aquelll7 жыл бұрын
I have never gotten the obsession for Moras. Maybe it is a Finnish thing because nobody in Finland appreciates them because we all know we are much better at making knives. Actually we use the word "mora" in Finland to generally describe any 5 euro shitty knife you keep in your toolbox just in case you need to do something you don't want to expose any proper knife to. Mora pretty much only sell the most cheap ones (1-10 euros) here in any general/tool store because any of the "higher end ones" won't sell here. :D
@sameold777 жыл бұрын
Moras are durable, cheap, and good knives. But I love my Terävä knives, they're great. Thanks for watching and commenting.
6 жыл бұрын
The idea is that finnish puukko is what you take to woods and cottage etc. for hard work with materials that should be used with knives. Mora you use when you fix your car and use it against metal etc. hard work ruining it and then buying new one. I think mora knives are excellent for it, exactly the cheap kinds. But if i go to woods, finnish puukko it is :)

i hope they don't eep uping the price, 29 was great, now 41 for knife alone 85 for sheath and shipping not too bad for an army surpluss, a contact for more info would be nice but hold off on how great is it, , , where did it come from, to me it looks like some cold war era knife, how in the world are you comparing light wood knives for intricate cutting to a beefed up camper type, , silly willie, i dont mind a harder scale on garberg but to me a palm swell is my biggest enemy in a knife. i don't know why, but i find it like walking with too tight a shoe, very uncomfortable and hits me in a nervouse spot the swell doesnt go in palm but more like under center of fingers, i can't even think about it, i do like the mora black and the thinner steel , how much steel is needed if stel is good and i think that mora steel is better than the 1095 type on the Jaakaripuuko, , oh, sharpening in scandi was easy with right stone, and technique, never rush your sharpening and take it easy on belly go with the curv, i came close to flatening my bely a bit but had a tough stone that straightened it out , i lost a mm of length but my knife is fine
@sameold774 жыл бұрын
All of the Terävä Carbon steel knives are made from 80CrV2, not 1095. Yes they have increased the price, as the demand has increased, that's how it works. They used to have a hard time keeping them in stock but looks like they've made a ton of them now. Thanks for watching and the comment.

The chunk of birch is a ridiculous inclusion. The company charges for shipping & this only adds to the expense. I also question the legality of shipping log pieces to foreign countries. When ever I have crossed the US/CDN border was required to leave all firewood at the crossing if I had any in my truck. It's a concern for bugs, seeds & protecting indigenous species. This speaks nothing of the black leather wearing, moustache sporting macho disco dude & an image of a real woody not just a wooden log. WTF? *Edit: It is clear you have the sickness like so many of us. So many Moras so little time. You might want to get that issue looked at. Cheers.
@sameold777 жыл бұрын
Ha, yea idk about shipping wood but it's only $9.99 to ship to US, regardless of the weight. I had one big order in multiple boxes once, still $9.99. Problem with these knives(my one at least) is its not grinded properly at the handle... having a bluntish edge about half a cm... with the rubber handle it ends up being impossible to regrind(without damaging the handle) and so you are gonna have to spend hours with a tiny stone trying to wear away the steel evenly at the hilt without messing up the part of the blade thats fine.
