In most cases, when a mother seeks an abortion it's because she feels trapped. She feels like she has no other realistic choice. She doesn't "want" an abortion, she wants a solution to a problem. Dr. David C. Reardon said, "A woman 'wants' an abortion like an animal, caught by its foot in a steel trap, wants to gnaw its leg off." The result is two victims: a child who loses his or her life, and an emotionally and spiritually wounded mother. Don't kid yourself: abortion is devastating to mothers. I've known quite a few women who've had to grapple with unintended pregnancies. Some chose life for their babies, some had abortions. I personally know women whose decisions to have their unborn babies killed have tormented them for decades. "The sadness never goes away," one dear friend told me. Her abortion haunts her every single day, even though it was more than twenty years ago. It's no wonder that suicide rates are enormously higher for post-abortive women than for women who carry their babies to term. I've also known women who, when faced with unplanned pregnancies, chose life for their babies. Their paths haven't necessarily been easy, but I've never met one who regretted that decision. Not even one. They all say the same thing: that they cannot imagine their lives without their child.
