I am fascinated by ur choice of fabrics & all the twisting & turning of blocks. Thank u for ur inspirations.

The 16x24 method did not work for me. I tried it 2x. It does not work as demonstrated. The blocks were uneven. PS not a new sewer.
@teresadownunder
@teresadownunder 3 жыл бұрын
Really? I find it to be quite an accurate method. It’s basically the same as making 2 HSTs at once but as a grid.
@teresadownunder
@teresadownunder 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe you can try by adding 1/8” to each measurement
@denveringram2304
@denveringram2304 Жыл бұрын
You can always make it larger and trim down. If you need 3 inch finished units, maybe make your grid 4.25 or even 4.5 inches. You will waste some fabric by doing this, but the grid method allows you to make as many as you want. If you find your fabric shifts a little when sewing, you may want to starch both fabrics before marking your grid. Pin pin pin. Then pin some more. It may also help to draw the stitching lines 1/4 inch away from the diagonal cutting lines. I find my ruler more accurate than my presser foot. You can also build in some floater space into your grid so that each marked square has some blank space (0.25-0.5 inch) on all 4 sides. Again this will produce some waste, but it might also avoid unpicking a few stitches. I like the grid method because I can make as many as I want, in any size I need quickly. One other thing that can help is sew your diagonal lines in opposing directions. If you start at the top for one, sew from the bottom for the other side. This will keep any pushing of the fabric by the presser foot equalized toward both edges, instead of potentially distorting it in one direction only. The other thing that can sometimes cause issues, and I’m just guessing here in order to help you be successful, is two different weights of fabric. If one is a batik, and the other is a quilting cotton, the different weights may throw things off. So use similar fabrics in terms of thickness. Batiks and flannel are the most extreme example of fabrics quilters typically use. And finally, if you need to increase your seam allowance to 3/8ths of an inch, go ahead and try that. Sometimes a quarter of an inch is skimpy with triangles and the seam feels more stable with a wider seam allowance on the diagonal seams. You’ll have to enlarge your grid to be able to trim down to the size you need and you can still build in 1/4th inch seam allowance on your horizontal and vertical block construction seams. The grid is the best method I’ve found for making a lot of HSTs where they all need to be the same color configuration. I hope you’ll try again. I recommend doing grids that are 2x3 or 3x4 before I tackling larger configurations. Start small and work up. I think you’ll find grids in a ratio of 2:1 (2 x4, 3 x6, etc) allow you to make some long continuous seams.
