Cat no longer produces engines for OTR trucks, due to new emissions standards, but they still produce engines for their worksite equipment.
@Romans--bo7br Жыл бұрын
Bill Cr.... The main reason Cat got out of the class 8 heavy duty truck engine market was NOT primarily due to (at the time) the 2007 Tier 3 emissions standards, as they were already losing market share to Cummins, prior to the ACERT engines. As George Taylor, Caterpillar’s director of global on-highway products, stated.... quote, “We see a ceiling of between 240,000 and 250,000 heavy trucks in North America and it will be increasingly difficult to participate as an independent engine maker.” Cats issue's really began back in the earlier 2000's when they were forced to pay $128M to the EPA for providing "non-compliant" engines to OTR truck manufacturers in 02 & 03. Class 7 & 8 (especially class 8) truck manufacturers were leaning more and more towards producing their own proprietary engines, ie; Volvo AB & Mack, Navistar's "MaxxForce" (re: German - MAN engines), PACCAR (Pete & KW) with it's European based DAF engines, etc, etc. Having said all that.... Cat has been quietly designing a New Tier 4 "correct" engine for the HD Class 8 truck market in recent years (this now 2023) and will be primarily offered through Paccar (Pete & KW). However, that is now being "shelved" due to the upcoming, complete collapse and subsequent destruction of the US.... between now (2023) & late 2024.

That's probably a bit of BS on the commentators part. They only made a few of them, back in the 70's, they were never a production truck. The engine was an EMD 3300 hp railway diesel with electric drive to the wheels.
@LNERMallard13 жыл бұрын
@ryanmajor2 I believe this truck was powered with a General Motors 645 V16 locomotive engine. It produced over 3000 horsepower.
@Romans--bo7br Жыл бұрын
Yes... an EMD 16-645E3 rated to 3,300hp (same prime-mover as used in all the "road" (GP & SD) locomotives (EMD) of the era, up until the advent of the 710 series prime-movers. EMD used the same model ID codes as the smaller Detroit Diesel 2 cycle engines (Not related to EMD at all, except both.. under ownership of GM at the time)... and that is, by.. per cylinder, swept volume cubic inch (ci) displacement. For example, Detroit Diesel Series 51, 53, 71, 92, 110 & 149 engines.. and EMD's 567, 645 & 710 Series (equal - ci per cylinder), as well as EMD's new (2015) Tier 4 compliant (US, only) "1010" J engine (4 cycle V12 with EGR [railroads] & 2 stage turbocharging w/3x turbo's) with 1,010 ci per cylinder. The "1010" J engine (the "J" denotes internal improvements over the original "H" engine) has a bore & stroke of 10.4" x 12", and like the 2 cycle versions from EMD, is a "medium" speed class engine, with rated hp at 1000 rpm max, where as the 2 cycles rated at or near the same outputs (higher for Marine & Gen-set versions), were producing it at 900 to 950 rpm depending on exact application... but, 900 rpm (notch, or.. run 8) in most locomotive applications. It is rated at 4,600hp, which is up, from the original V12 "H" engine of 1996 rated at 4,500hp, and down from the 16 cylinder version with 6,000hp from the same era.... and of which an order of 300 units, went to China. From the 2015 version, forward...EMD is Not producing a V16 version of the "1010" J engine for US based locomotives. The vast majority of orders for EMD locomotives designed & built for export to other countries, world wide, are still preferring the 2 cycle, series 710 (V8, 12 & 16 cylinders)... over the "1010" 4 cycle, by a substantial margin.

0:54 yeah we aren’t fucking when we say our EMD Prime Movers are expensive. Today the EMD 1010 series used the SD70ACE-T4 itself goes for $1,000,000.00 itself while the entire locomotive costs between $2,500,000.00 and $5,000,000.00 for Alternating Current (AC) traction.

@lowercherty5 жыл бұрын
Not really. The truck was one of two or three built, everything custom. By the time this film was made normal mining trucks were almost as big and it was on its way out, waiting for a major component failure. This truck is now on static display in Sparwood BC Canada
@jamesberlo42985 жыл бұрын
Thats false, supposedly only one was made, but still any major component would be replaced and fairly easily, I think because at that time it had already been in service for over two decades , nearly three.
