But if it doesn’t, like what her husband wanted, she didn’t support it.
@chacha23216 ай бұрын
@@SamDavidJr I agree, at times she could’ve been more supportive but honestly they wanted her to always give money. I think she was less emotional because honestly they were cold towards her. The other sister always mouthed off to her. Let’s not forget big mama would laugh when Maxine would take digs at her. She also stole her bf and her hubby could’ve been more supportive and communicative too. I agreed with you but the man could’ve left. Idk, so many movies can capture a man being a provider but cold/ rigid but it’s accepted but a woman that’s logical hits different. They were always invalidating her feelings. Therefore, I can understand why she was kinda cold. I like some of your points though. However, each character had flaws and I think her being closed off was a defense mechanism. Lastly, they found the hidden money and they still didn’t pay her back. I can understand them paying for the home but financially or emotionally these ppl were entitled.

One thing I noticed with their mother was that she would always try to guilt Teri into taking care of her family because of how she had to provide FOR HER KIDS!! You’re their mother! It’s like she resented Teri, idk if she may have had her younger or what, but the anger should’ve went towards her husband and with a lot of the type of women their anger/resentment is misplaced and they take it out on their child. You basically want your child/children to feel guilty for what you as a parent are SUPPOSED TO DO! And like you said the reason they felt so comfortable disrespecting Teri is because their mother did it and she would always come down on Teri Everything you said was the truth especially about how they depict BW who are successful as “bougie” and of course the film was written by A BM

"I wasn't in the kitchen because mama and daddy kept my head in the books. That's why I'm a successful lawyer." That line explains a lot. The oldest daughter, Terri had the pressure to succeed while Maxine, the middle daughter, was only groomed to be a homemaker. The youngest daughter, Bird was the spoiled one. Big Mama didn't bothered to teach her anything not even to cook. Before she married Lem, she had men like Simuel who probably took care of her. You know, take her shopping when she wanted, expensive restaurants, fancy trips. She was like every rapper's baby mama and girlfriend. Protecting himself or not, Blimp hit him with a glass bottle. Terri was only trying to help in thinking Lem beat up Bird with the shop door boarded after the glass shattered (Thanks to Lem) and Bird crying hysterically in the back, what would anybody do ? Rather it was a big misunderstanding or not. At the end Terri did try to apologize in feeling bad while making it right in having him bailed out and his 2nd strike sponged and this the thanks she gets. Now if it was Max who sent Blimp after Lem by mistake everyone would’ve easily forgiven her and shoved it under the rug. They don't like introverted shy bw because then "we think, we're all that" (their insecurities) , they don't like bw that don't make being from the hood their entire personality, they think women who speak eloquently want to be "wh!t3" and are "stuck up" , if you're not a stereotypical bw then they make you the butt of jokes, pull you down to try and make themselves feel better because it helps them forget where they are for short amount of time, its nothing but projection. Thank you for this reaction. Rewatching this movie as an adult i’ve come to the realization that the family treated Terri like garbage. They used & abused her. The movie made Terri look like the villain because of her standoffish demeanor. The reason why she was negative Nancy was because Max stole her boyfriend & married him, the family made her pay for everything & her marriage was on the rocks. Max was a lowkey bum. Bird was probably still messing around with Simuel because she didn’t set any boundaries & she went behind her husband’s back to Simuel to get him a job. Fun fact: The late Whitney Houston & Halle Berry were considered for the role of Terri.

I need a sequel or something where Teri finally stands up to them on their toxic behavior. Everyone because all the adults in the family did her so wrong.

You said it all. Teri was treated terribly by the whole family. she should have gotten all the money in the tv at the end and left the state and went no contact with her whole family.

Family like this love to tell you to “mind your business” when you’re funding their entire existence seemingly unaware that your money IS your business. Don’t want somebody in your business stay out of their pockets. Simple. You’re not going to marry a bum then stay in my face w/your hand out. Terri needed strong boundaries with them and a lot of distance.

I agree that Terri deserved so much better. The ONLY thing i feel she was wrong about was her lack of support for her husband. But on the flipside, i dont think anyone bothered to teach Terri how to embrace her "womanhood" outside of being educated and having a career. Like so many older siblings, Terri was pushed to be successful, while Max and Bird experienced a more laid-back upbringing. But Mama Jo came from that old school way of thinking that pushed "family over everything" with no regard for how it was actually causing a lack of accountability. She should have never sent the girls on a date together, which ultimately ended up in Maxine stealing her sisters boyfriend, and she should have been forthcoming about the money she had put aside, instead of guilting Terri into paying for everything. She also should have never put Faith off on Terri; any woman, young or old, knows that you do not allow the wayward tramp into a married womans home. And she should have never, ever enlisted the help of a child to handle adult matters.
@Nita_Vibes1016 ай бұрын
"A fish rots from the head” saying comes to mind here. Every problem she faced seemed to trace back to her mother. Her tendencies to prioritize her family, no matter how toxic, coupled with her 'pickmeisha' behavior, took a toll on her oldest. While I do believe her husband was wrong to withdraw so much money from their joint account, I also agree that she needed more support for his dreams. But considering the immense work load she had to juggle and take responsibility for, it's understandable why she was on autopilot and so rigid. This is how people like Terri learn to maintain order and prevent themselves from going insane with so much their plate. And 😂 at “wayward tramp”
@PepperJade936 ай бұрын
Here here!!! And yes...I couldn't stand how Mama Jo just threw Faith off on Terri...meanwhile she's got a huge house; if Faith needed somewhere to stay that bad, she should have stayed at the big house...shoot, make a pallet on the floor. 🤣 Terri was right to get in Faith's behind about her mooching off HER mother, only to leave them high and dry. Faith had a motive to go for Terri's husband because she felt some type of way towards Terri. I don't understand how Terri didn't snatch Faith up by her weave and drag her through Max's house at that party. 🤣🤣 And we need to discuss how trifling Max was and how incredibly stupid Bird was. "Bird" was a fitting name for that character because she was truly a chicken head. 🤣 Who enlists the help of an ex to help your felon HUSBAND get a job? Whew baby...just a dummy. 🤣🤣🤣

Big Mama was painted as the sweet mother, but truthfully… she was no better. She liked to think she was neutral when it came to her daughters, but she wasn’t. She didn’t have her oldest daughter’s back.

1000% apt. If you’re the black sheep, there’s no other way out but NO CONTACT or VERY LOW CONTACT! Their energy is toxic and really stops your blessings! Move away from them and run! You will never regret it!

I remember during the pandemic there was a black twitter thread that said big mama was the villain of soul food😂. And it’s true! She never intervened when her daughters were bickering , and always expected Teri to be responsible and mature which she has always been. Then they wanna look at her like she’s crazy after she has an emotional breakdown, shes literally been the backbone of the family even when big mama was ailing she was concerned about the bigger picture while everybody else got to lean on each other m. I would just think a positive movie resolution would be instead of Terri catching an”attitude” and leaving their lunch meeting her sisters should’ve let bygones be bygones intentionally listened to her grievances and then Bird would tell them she’s pregnant. But noooo Maxine still gets to be the “keeping it real” supportive and compassionate sister. Terri should’ve cut everybody else in the family except Ahmad who admired his auntie.

Terri was the victim the whole entire time. Honestly, The whole family was using her and was living off of her but when Terri had enough and was tired of them using her. They painted her out to be stuck up arrogant for not helping them. But they never wanted help pay or do anything, Terri wanted to sell the house because she was drained from all the years of them using her, financially and mentally. Overall, Terri was the victim and needed to cut her family off. Big Mama enabled Terri’s mistreatment and painted it as Terri being big headed and stuck up because she had money and has a successful career, and big mama turned a blind eye to Terri’s mistreatment And abuse done by the family.

I never really thought of her as stuck up, just tired. Some people really have the mentality of when ONE of you made it WE ALL made it. They then lean on that one person drowning them. If the shoe were on the other foot, they would feel differently. The reality is Terry was done wrong and expected to just get over it. People like Terry should pack their bags and move far away if they can. Let them do it all without you.

The “We see each other comment” about Faith and Maxine 😂☠️☠️. It’s crazy how as a child, it seemed like Terry was stuck up/not a team player when the whole time she was successful, beautiful, logical, with the right amount of compassion, despite what her family did to her. Like you, I wanted to see Terri flip the script and marry a successful man, stack even more money while chunking up the deuces to them. I’m so happy most of us are starting to see and call out a lot of the toxic messages that were fed to us as kids.

Videos like these really inspire me to finally start making my own content because I have so much to share and discuss, just subscribed! 🤗 But for now I’ll share a snippet. It’s crazy to watch movies like this now when you’ve matured a bit more, understand the world better, or have been through your own experiences, like myself. Between Soul Food, Tyler Perry’s Big Happy Family and This Christmas, the boujie, pretentious, and snappy sister archetype is so played out. The way they paint these black women out to be is awful, with the exception of Kelli in “This Christmas”, because I absolutely love her and she embodies a hard-working, accountable, and empathetic woman, who's a girls girl, which we love. Especially when we found out the trauma and turmoil characters like Kimberly & Terri went through growing up. It's astounding to still hear that they stuck around and helped provide for their families, which Terri did or no matter how limited Kimberly tried to make it, none the less they still showed up. Then to have a mother like both of them did, Big Mama and Shirley, who painted themselves as the victims, when they really were the embodiment of narcissistic and pick-me, women/mothers, had to be grueling and is ultimately the cause of the rest of their family members treating them the way they did. Loved this video and thank you for opening up these kinds of discussions! 💗✨

When the movie came out, I was rooting for the kid, I nearly believed in the whole "family over everything" narrative, and thought Teri was a stuck-up ice queen. As an adult, however, my views of her, and her family, have completely changed. It took a long time to realize Teri was the true victim of the whole movie. Her whole family was all-take-and-no-give, except for disrespect, ingratitude, and BS. The movie would've been better if it ended with Teri severing all ties with her toxic af family and husband, and move on with her life being free from their burdens. Justice for Teri, indeed.
